"Open up your mouth and feed it" is a very common action for a big eater. We get hungry very often, we love food, and we like to eat! However, being a big eater does not necessary mean a person eats without control. I love to eat, and i get hungry quite often. Normally i eat a lot, but i couldn't get fat. People around me always say i look skinny, and ask me to eat more. In fact, i do eat a lot! Sometimes, i use to eat two persons portion of food. LOL! But after i eat, something weird always happen....and that is....I BECOME SLEEPY! Hahaha...it happens all the time, when i am full after every meal, i become sleepy. My husband always laughs and teases me, because after every meal, i would have a sleepy face and wanting to sleep. What about you? ^o^

hi joycseer, i am same like you too! i eat a lot and couldn't get fatter! no matter how much i eat, i still have a skinny face, body, tail, hands, legs, and other parts of my body. but nowadays, i saw one part of my body started to increase its size, it's my stomach/tummy/belly! oops, please don't tell anyone about my secret, okay? because i assume nobody will read my response here. LOL! but really? tell you something, my wife and i both also like to eat, and sometimes we eat large portion of food. there was one time we ordered a set meals which was actually meant for four to five person, but both of us finished them all. back to your question, no, i won't feel sleepy after eating but if i were to go to listen a boring speech after a meal... then maybe i will feel sleepy. LOL! p/s: i think maybe you don't realise i mentioned that i have a tail?

Hahaha...you made me roll on the floor laughing! I noticed you mentioned "tail", but i didn't know you had a TAIL! Let us get you a doctor, since you are skinny, but with a TAIL, you might need a body checkup! Since both you and your wife loves to eat, is she skinny like you too? Or she would get grow in size easily? It is a good thing to love food. It makes me craving for them whenever i see delicious food. As for me, after a satisfied meal, i would feel sleepy. If like your case i were to go listen to a boring speech after a meal, i guess i would have dozed off through the whole speech.

no, i don't need a body checkup for that tail thingy. actually i purposely fix that thing to my body so that i can pull it to release the gas whenever the size of my stomach/tummy/belly is getting larger. i think if you were to know that you will be listening to a boring speech after a meal, you might have dozed off even on your way to the place where the speech is taking place (before you start listening to the speech).

seeing you are asian, might i ask: do you eat rice with every meal? that maybe a reason why you feel sleepy after eating, as rice is high in carbohydrates, and carbs make you relax, thus you tend to feel sleepy afterwards. especially during midday. anyways, happy eating.

rice is good, i like it too.. i'm not sure that we can assume that carbohydrates react more during midday. it's just that midday is the time that I feel drowsier than any other time during the day. maybe for some people as well.

Hi murkie, yes i do. I love to eat rice. Rice is one of my need in every day meal, part from western steak. My family members always say i am a rice bin. That's because i always store a lot of rice in my tummy. Hmm...i see, i learn something different. So, carbohydrates usually reacts more during the midday? But sometimes i eat noodles and i felt sleepy too. Hehe... Thanks a lot for your sharing. Have a nice day.

Sounds like your body is putting all it's energies into digesting that huge meal you just ate! Maybe smaller meals, more often, would work for you?

Hi GreenMoo, that is a good idea! I would prefer smaller meals, more often too. However, i couldn't keep going out to buy my meals especially during working hours. So, most of my meal time only split into three : breakfast, lunch and dinner. Normally breakfast i don't eat, so morning i don't get sleepy because of my meal. I gets sleepy because i have not enough sleep yet from yesterday night. LOL!

Sorry, typo error : "Normally breakfast i don't eat much..." Last time i totally don't take breakfast at all. I prefer to spend my time sleeping rather than waking up early to eat. But after married, my husband always force me to have some breakfast because he says is not good for our brain if we don't take breakfast. Breakfast is very important for the start of the day.

Hi surekharathi, LOL! Well, i feel sleepy but i don't sleep. My husband knows my character well in this, he knows i would get sleepy after a meal. And he finds it very cute. What?? Forgot your meals? How could you? I guess maybe you are too concentrated with your work that you didn't realize the time for meals has passed and you missed it. Taking meals late midnight is not good for health as it disrupts the body system functioning. Well, i think you need to take your meals at the right time to avoid gastric okay? Do take care, "Health is Wealth". Also, "Prevention is better than cure". So, don't forget to take your meals at the proper right time ya.

I never get sleepy after a good meal, even if I'm really full. But all of us are different. Just make sure that you don't eat that much/full yourself when you don't have the opportunity to sleep :).

5 minutes? I am afraid i would sleep through the whole afternoon later and woke up realizing everyone has gone home. Just kidding... Maybe i will try that. Normally we go out for lunch as there aren't much food sold in our company canteen. So by the time i reached office, i have no time to have a nap already. All bosses are around too.

HAHAHA. Funny you always feel so sleepy, hmm but its bad to sleep immediately after eating you should have give time for you to digest before you sleep. hmmm May i advice you to do something to keep you busy for a while so that you may have to digest the food u ate.

Hi gilenie, hehe...yes it is funny indeed. I find it myself humorous too. I love to eat, but after i eat, i feel sleepy. That is true, after meal is not advisable to sleep. Our body needs to digest the food we eat. So your suggestion to keep myself busy after a meal is good, however the problem is after my meal, i feel lazy to do anything after a meal. All i want to do is just to sit down doing nothing and rest. But since i am working, i will not be able to do that. So, i will usually stay awake. =)

I also eat a lot but it is too difficult for me to pull on more weights. I can eat whatever I like. And I think it is quite normal that we feel sleep after having the meal. Actually nowadays usually I will take a nap in the office after lunch. So I will be much more energetic to work in the afternoon.

Hi youless, it's great that you can eat a lot and wouldn't gain weight. But do eat healthily ya. Enjoy your meals! Yes, i would like to take a nap or rest after my lunch too. However, i usually go out to lunch, and i only have one hour lunchtime. So, by the time i reached office after lunch, it is time for work again. Sigh...no matter how sleepy i am, i just couldn't sleep. Especially when you have your boss sitting right in front facing you right? =D

Hi Joycseer, I was always like that too. I could eat and eat and never gain an ounce. In fact, I pushed myself to eat more in order to put on some weight because I was underweight. I was well into my 30's when I finally reached a point where I weighed 115 pounds and as long as I did not drop below that, I waivered between that and 120 and still eating lots. My appetite had stretched from all the years of trying to put on weight. Then I had a medical problem and the meds they put me on caused me to gain weight. I got up to 140 that isn't huge but on me it was and it took me forever to lose it. Now at age 56, I really have to be careful. Metabolism changes and I could gain too much, I'm sure. My guess as to why you are tired after eating is that you are eating too much??? I really am not sure as I was pretty hyper and I did not get tired after eating.

Hi sid556, sorry to hear that and your sharing reminds me of something. If i eat outside food like buffet style, i would gain about 4 pounds straight. However, when it comes to tomorrow morning, i weigh my weight again, the 4 pounds would have dropped because the food has been digested. My mother also says that if she eats outside food, she would gain weight. But not for home cooked food. For me, if i eat home cook food, i would never gain an ounce. And if i face with work pressure and stress, i might actually face decrease of 2 to 4 pounds in my weight. Home cook food is usually much healthier, less fats, less oil, less salt, less dark soy sauce, and more hygiene. Regardless i ate too much or just full, as long as i felt satisfied, i would surely feel sleepy. Although my body metabolism is still there to help me digest my food fast, i think i need to be careful too. As a person is aging, they should start controlling the amount of food intake because the body metabolism would be decreasing. And our body cannot digest the food as fast as it used to be. And also, doctor says that as a person is aging, they don't need so much food consumption in a day compare to the younger ones.

I really hate that feeling, especially after breakfast or lunch. I found that carbohydrates make me sleepy, although it might be different for you. If I eat protein like eggs or meat and cut way back on breads and sugary stuff I don't feel as sleepy. Try some fish or meat with lots of vegetables and skip dessert and breads. You'll probably feel more alert and enjoy your day more! In fact, to help myself sleep, I have a piece of toast before bed and that makes me sleepy.

Hi dragon54u, that is really true. I feel that too, it must have been the amount of carbohydrates rising up that causes us to feel sleepy. Thank you very much for the suggestion, i will try to have more fish and vegetables instead. But those dishes comes with rice (carbohydrates)!

I am a big eater like you but it made me gain weight so i stopped eating as much. Yes i get tired after eating. I don't get tired all the time after eating, but quite a bit i will get tired after eating. Some one told me it's because of your food being digested and your body working that makes you so tired after eating , but i don't know this for sure to be true. I just know that the bigger the meal i eat the more tired i am after.

Hi redredrose, yes i think that would be the reason after reading much responses from our dear mylotters. That's true, we may need to watch out if we gain weight too much if we eat too much. Actually, i don't prefer to eat a lot, but is because i get hungry very fast, so i eat more. Surely the bigger meal we eat, the more tired we are. This is because it takes up most of our energy chewing the food.

All of us if we noticed, after our meal it feels as if we are drowsy. One of my teachers during my college days explained that to us. He said, we felt as if we are sleepy after we eat because the oxygen of our brain is going downward to our stomach which is busy grinding the food that we have eaten. And so as a result of a less oxygen in our brain, we get drowsy or sleepy then as our stomach has more oxygen then our brain. That's the only thing I remembered. lol. If anybody here in mylot community can help us would be better.

Hi kokomo, you may be right. Normally when i eat too full, i have difficulty in breathing. I feel like the food is stack too full up to my throat sometimes and makes me difficult to walk or move about. So, when we face difficulty in breathing, not much oxygen is being pump up to our brain, and that may cause a lack in oxygen there. And since we ate too full, most oxygen is shifted to our stomach instead to digest the food. Thank you for your sharing! Have a good day.

Hi Mavic, really?? Wow, i couldn't understand too. Maybe you ate too much and became very full each time after your spaghetti meal? Try to add some fresh vegetables into your meal, see if it helps. And don't eat too full, just have 70% to 80% full would be great. See if that helps you, and let me know. Enjoy the pleasant day.

Hello Joyceer, about not being fat, that is may be because your metabolism is fast.. About your sleepiness after eating, I may suggest you to check the ingredients of the food you eat..it may contain monosodium glutamate or MSG.. this MSG causes sleepiness.. well, that's what my chemistry professor said.. hohoho! ^_^ If not scientific, I may say that eating too much can cause sleepiness because of the heaviness of your stomach.. hehehe! :DDDD I may suggest you to lessen your food intake and eating fatty foods as well.. The best advice is to consult a nutritionist because I'm sure that nutritionist knows best the right food we should eat for our better healthier body.

Hi ClassifiedInfoEpic01, thank you for the information. Well, i seldom take fatty foods. I eat bigger portion in a meal, but i don't take fatty or even sweet food. I would eat the amount or portion of food that would last me till my next meal. If i were to use a lot of my brain thinking, i would surely eat more because i know my food will be digested very fast and i would get hungry easily. If i don't have much work to do for the day, maybe i would eat normally. But regardless, i will still feel sleepy especially after lunch. Regarding the MSG you are saying, any food we eat outside surely has MSG. There is no food that you eat has no MSG, unless is home cook food, or certain organic food shop. But we only eat out during weekdays lunch and sometimes weekends. Other time, i would cook at home : less oil, less salt, less soy sauce, less sugar, no MSG, no starch, and others. My family cares for health very much, and my mother is as good as a food nutritionist, and we usually eat home healthily with all organic ingredients.

so its not the problem only for me. i guess i have high rate of metabolism too, i make myself full after each lunch and love to eat high fat things . but unfortunately i feel nauseated after i have things even its water. so may you good health and keep doing physical exercises.

may be.. you feel nauseated because your tummy is too full.. hahaha! XD It's not good that you're feeling nauseated..but thank God, you do not vomit.. because if you're vomiting..you may actually have bulimia.. as I remember..bulimia is a condition or something like eating disorder.. it's like you eat too much..then force yourself to vomit... I think you need to moderate your food intake..and hmmm..lessen your intake of fatty foods and replace it with vegies! I may suggest you to try to taste vegetables*WASH IT FIRST!* when it's still fresh(uncooked), and you'll realize that vegies are really good and tasty! The fresher, the better.. fresh foods (specially fruits and vegetables), makes our feeling lighter.. not like meat that makes us feel heavier... Hope my comment may help you.. ^_^

I have always been the same way as well. Maybe thats one of the reasons I've been having trouble sleeping lately because my stomach is basically empty. It rumbles and tells me feed me but the thought of food just makes me sick. I have a busy day out with my kids tomorrow so hopefully nothing bothers me so I can consume some food. If I walk around all day without food I might faint as I've been very light headed lately from it. I know I need to eat but I just cant force myself to do it. When I worked at a hospital at lunch time I would fill myself with all the yummy food at the cafeteria and would be so tired it was hard to go back to work lol. When I would eat dinner at my grandpas I would fill myself with his delicious potatoes he made and I would have such a hard time staying awake sometimes I would fall asleep on his couch.

I was very depressed today so again it was hard to eat. I made coffee but could only get about 1/4 of it down. When my kids ate their pretzels at the mall they didnt eat all of it so I finished what was left and that was my food for the day. I hate to waste food thats the only reason I ate it. It was tough my mouth started to water and I felt like I was going to throw up just knowing I had to eat it. I love the food its just whatever is going on with my depression is making me not be able to eat.

Hi shaggin, hahaha...that shows you have over consume certain food at a time. And that is "delicious yummy food"! Well, i had a similar experience just like you too. I ate quite a light dinner, so i was rather hungry at night and i couldn't sleep as my stomach is grumbling for food. I thought i could just ignore it till tomorrow morning. Thinking that i will not feel my stomach hungry anymore if i fall asleep. However, when i woke up the next morning, i felt ill, i felt like vomiting and fainting. I felt so bad, that i rushed to the kitchen to prepare some noodle soup. After i gobble up everything, then only i felt slightly better. But, i took a few days to recover from the upset tummy, feeling of vomiting and dizziness. So now, if i feel hungry, i better make a cup of cereal drink. I heard some elders told me before that if i leave my stomach empty and let it grinds my stomach, it will cause a hole in my stomach. And by that time, i will need to admit to the hospital and get my stomach hole stitch up. I wouldn't want that to happen. .

Well feeling sleepy after a heavy meal is quite normal, as you say at times you eat two persons food at times, about getting fat ; in my opinion there is no connection with food lol, many eat a lot, don't gain a pound, many do exercises, dieting to lose; that too doesn't help; it is the gene, the heredity decides your weight LOL Thanks for sharing.

It is simply because the oxygenated blood is focusing more on digestive system. It is most likely that the oxygen going to the brain lessen. That's the reason why we feel sleepy after meal.

As for me, i always thought it was because i consume too much of carbohydrates and sugar. That is why i feel very tired after the meal. But it is very funny that after every single satisfied meal, my face immediately turn to a sleepy look automatically. And my husband always laugh and commented that it was cute. LOL!
