If a person had been hired and signed a contract with specific job description, then it will fine to follow such responsibilities accordingly. What if, the employer asked you to do a task not included in your term of reference, are you willing to do it?

If the task is not evil and illegal, I think I still have to do so even if it is not my job. Sometimes I think this is very common. If I can handle it, why not do so? Sometimes I think being busy can make you feel less bored in the office and the time will go by faster. Besides, it can leave a good impression to the boss. The boss always prefers to a hard working staff.

Hi there, I have always been willng to go way beyond at any job I have ever worked..But it also depends on what I am asked to do. I am an team player and I am old school,I believe in just doing things when things are needed to be done..Like I said it always depends on the task being asked of me...But I know me and I am not completely closed too the idea of doing a task outside my job description....

It is fine to do extra work, as long as they will not take advantage or be abusive. Thanks

It depends on the type and/or complexity of the job. If it wouldn't take an hour of my time and I am not busy, I might do it. I can also consider doing the job if it is interesting or I would like to know or learn it (say, a new skill). The problem here is that my employer would probably think he can throw any job to me despite the fact that it is not included in my job description.

hello, Shavkat! Actually, I have experienced that from my previous job online. The contract stated that I would be in charge of their social media presence thus being a "Social Media Manager". But as days went on, I was asked to be one of the customer care representative, have become a system administrator, web content writer, made proposals for clients and also performed online training for clients availing our web services. Actually, I think I was underpaid for all the jobs I have done for the company, but I could not force them to pay me more coz I know that they are also in their early stage of business and I also wanted to help them and become a part of their success.

I understand your situation, I do have no problem with this. But then, if the boss of a certain company obliged me to do it. Then it will be another set of issue for some co-employees too. Thanks for sharing

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well i think in such a case we have the right to oppose and it has not been mentioned in our contract. i have heard many people saying that they are forced to do certain tasks which they never found in the contract and since they have already signed a contract they have to carry the instructions. Now i think they are doing a foolish job, no matter how big or small that task is, we have to ask the details and purpose regarding the task. What say?

Yes, I am into this. Some employers are not that consistent with their specific details on job descriptions. We need to know this before signing of contracts. Thanks

You should be able to, in an ideal world stick to only the jobs which are put in writing on your job description, however bosses have a way of seeing you as being awkward and on the lines of insubordination if you state that particular job he or she has asked you to do is not in your remit, they will remember you have said no to them and will record it for future purposes. I know a colleague who would stick to their job description guidelines unwavering, all the time! They never got a promotion the boss would always put others first before her. He obviously couldn't say but I know deep down he was getting his own back for her saying no to him when he asked her to do jobs that weren't on her job description!

I would do it if it meant going above and beyond. But it depends on what it is. Sometimes in my job I have to do things that I don't necessarily feel is part of my original job description, but I never do anything that makes me feel uncomfortable or anything!

You might want to check the job discription you were given. In my experience, there is usually a sentence at the end that reads something like "and any other tasks as required my employer' or something to that effect. That is pretty much standard here in the U.S.

Well, I having arrived at the ripe age of 37 still unemployed (and this I think it is very serious!), I tell you personally that the problem you described in your, albeit brief discussion, I just want to be able to deal with! I personally do not care if I sign a contract and the owner gave me a job is not foreseen in the Regulation. I in every way I run it, because (at least in Italy), today at work you must know how to be humble and helpful if you want to keep your environment, workplace.

I am in the government service and in our office, we work as a team and all of us are expected to know the job of each other except for that of the stenographers. Whenever one is absent we can entertain the clients on what they wanted. Specially nowadays wherein the government is in austerity, 2 positions in our team remained vacant.

Oh yes I would. I was hired as a secretary in my last job and then after being hired I was told I had to clean the place, the front office, the back office and the bathrooms as well. I did it because I needed the job and the money. I did what I had to do to keep my job. I was not hired as a maid but that did not matter...

Depends on the tasks asked. If it's not in your job description, I'd suggest following up with the hiring manager and ask if this isn't in my description, why do I have to do it? If not, and you don't have a problem with it, then by all means.

Well if it was ask for a one time task only then I might obliged to do it. But if it will be given as permanent task then I should start questioning it. I think tasks that are done on a one time basis maybe acceptable but if it is given on a regular basis then I think it is not fair anymore.

Well it depends if the price is right . I always do things beyond my job discription sometimes I do it for free just to help. But if if iis official added to my job I think it needs an increase in salary.

I would definitely go for it, since I'm just at the beginning of my career and and extra job would be an excellent opportunity to learn and experience new things. But of course, if the employer asks me to do it and I already have countless tasks on my plate to handle, I might just have to turn down the offer, unless the employer tells me to put down everything else I'm doing and just focus on that new task. In short, I will do it, but the employer will have to make sure that I am not overburdened with tasks until a point which I am stressed out.

I will not do or agree to do some other work that does not fall in my contract. But I will surely asked before doing it or agreeing to do it that too on emergency to concern person. This is because if once agreed to do some job which you are not suppose to do then it will be always stuck on you and then it will become routine affairs in life.

Hi friend, yes, i will do. While working in a concern we must follow the employers words and fulfill his necessities to get job satisfaction, as our employer is paying for our work, so there is nothing wrong in doing some extra work for him, if he is satisfied with our work, surely he will get a good image about us and give some promotion and incentives to us, so i will do extra job if employer is seeking it from me, this kind of additional jobs show that employer have faith with our skills and talents and he believe that we will do the job in a proper way, so only he give it to us.

Yes, as long as I can and as long as I know that they are not abusing my generosity in terms of my time and talent. It is very difficult to say "no", it is very difficult to say "I will try". But me I will do it i have no choice it is the boss asking me to do it, as long as it is not immoral.
