would you still eat an apple with some worms inside?

I opened this apple which looked quite okay from the outside, no cuts, no bruises, nothing. Alas when I cut it into half, I saw some worms in the middle part of it. There is no rotting area but there are worms somewhere in the center part of the fruit. I scraped and removed this part and ate the rest of the apple which was juicy and sweet. Would you have done the same thing or would you throw it away? Was it wrong or unhealthy for me to eat that apple that had worms inside it?

It is not unhealthy at all. I know some people that eat cherries with worms without having the smallest problem. Worms are eatible, we may just not be used to this and we find them disgusting. I would have done the same like you with the apple. :)

Thank you Spicy. I thought I am the only one who do this. I did not eat the worms of course. I removed them and the part that touched them.

for, it is still okey... as long as the apple is not yet fully rotten. as you've said, their is no trace of open entry on the surface that may cause the entry point of the bacteria. worms are edible, since they live inside the apple, it is clean. according from the books which i have read, it means that the apple are organic, no pesticides or chemicals use to grown the apple. because if that apple grown through chemicals or pesticides, i think that worm may not live on the fruit. so don't worry to eat that apple.

Personally I would have thrown it away, I don't like to see things like that, sounds crazy but I am a little squeamish when it comes to bugs, I suppose there is nothing wrong with eating them, they are protein after all, and they do eat bugs when there is no food around in the Jungles and even on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

I know you didn't eat them my friend, but if by accident you did, they wouldn't have been harmful, yukky at the thought however!

Wolfie, I didn't eat the worms. I removed or scraped that part with the worms and that included the wriggling wormies.

Oh, I would do the same maybe. I'll just avoid eating the part with worms. It wasn't wrong to eat it. It was still juicy and sweet, right? I guess there was no rotten taste so it was just fine to eat it. Fruits are now expensive. I guess we have to eat them as soon as we buy them to avoid having worms. Oooops. I have two apples here. I'll just eat them tomorrow. Hope there are no worms in them yet. You reminded me to eat them. Thanks for sharing and happy mylotting.

Sometimes I do not even notice when I eat worm in the fruit. When I noticed that I accidentally ate worm in the fruit I would vomit and I throw that fruit because it very disgusting to me. If i notice it early i will remove the worm and eat it.

it is quite normal to have some worms in an apple. I will just remove the worms in it and enjoy fresh part of apple. If throwing away for just having worm, just a waste of fruit. It has no affect to our health problem. haha, you are doing the right thing.

you're right, betty! most of the fruits in the market are grown with a chemicals or pesticides, that's why it looks very good, no traces of any defect, looks enticing. but in the inner of it, it is full of chemicals that may harms our health or body in many years. that worm are very talented, because, why he will lived in that fruit if filled with pesticide, that may cause him die.

The 'worms' are the grubs or caterpillars of a species of moth which lays its eggs in the flower of the apple tree before the fruit develops (that is why there was no blemish on the apple). It would actually be quite harmless to eat them but most people will cut out the worm eaten part of the apple (which is usually the core, anyway) and eat the good parts. If the apple had been left on the tree, the caterpillar or worm would have eaten its way out and crawled to a crevice in the bark of the tree where it would have pupated ready to turn into a moth next spring.

Thanks for that great info Owlwings. At least we know it's the harmless kind of worms.

I think you should refrain from eating apples that had 'worms' inside. Even if you cut off the portion where the worm was at, these maggots could've laid eggs which I doubt you'd see immediately. Worse is that these things also excrete stuff. These eggs and excrement may not be where on the portion you had scraped or cut off, and so there's a chance you might eat them too.

Oh. I did not think of that possibility Beamer. I hope nothing of that sort happened.

I guess it's not unhealthy. I would do the same thing if I also open an apple with a worm inside. It is easy to scrape and remove the area where the worm is found.

Yes! Why not? You can even eat those juicy worms! Come to think of it, the worms were found inside the apple, and all they ate was the apple itself so when you eat the worms, it is the same as eating the apple too! Hahaha Just kidding! Seriously, I think there is nothing wrong and unhealthy there because you already scraped the area where you found the worms so it was cleaned. I would do the same if I were you. It is a wise move!

I will definitely cut the part. I just can imagine the worm moving from my mouth to my stomach and it freaks me out. No matter how much htey sau it's ok, for me it's not.

If I were in your case, I will do the same... Because it is more on practicality and obviously it is worth on eating that apple. It is almost like loving someone with some attitude problem that once you help him out of that shell then you will find happiness.

Apple with worm on it, hmmm. I think I'll just do the same thing you did. I don't think it will be dangerous for me. I just wonder how the worms get in there without any bruises or cuts from the fruit though.

Hi Cut! I would throw away the apple seeing worms in it. You never know if those worms infected the rest of the parts of the apple. I think our health is more important than the cost of an apple.

Those are fruit worms and I think they're find. I think I would eat the apple too, but I would really be too cautious to look for them and wash bit by bit before consuming. I think it's not worth the over-thinking. If the worms are big, I would throw the apple. But if it's the little white ones, then I would scrape and wash. But if there's an option (if I wasn't the one who bought it) then I would just throw and get another one. Have a great mylot experience ahead!

Haha, I bet everyone will shout to you " Eat The Apple!". There's nothing wrong eating an apple with worm in it. As long as you remove the worm. I did it all the time. Don't waste anything that can still be eaten. I bet everyone in Mylot agree with me.

I can eat the rest of the part after removing the unhealthy rotten part of the worms. Millions of people don't have anything to eat, and there is nothing wise to throw away the whole apple which is still better to eat.

I will not eat it. Worms or anything that crawls gives me goosebumps. My brother is like that, just removing the portion where the bug is then eat the whole thing. I know that it's wrong to just throw the apple because many are starving but worms just grosses the hell out of me. I'm not sure about the health thing. They say that when there is a worm on a fruit, it's healthier to eat it. I don't know if that is a proven theory.
