How Many Plastic Bags Can You Use?

So while I was at Walmart this morning, I heard the lady tell the man checking out before me that it was her first day on the register. When I was ready to start checking out I noticed she was putting one item in each bag and every once in awhile maybe 2! I didn't say anything because I knew she might be really nervous or something since it was her first time. I quietly moved a few items into bags with other similar items as I hate using too many bags. I will reuse them so that's not a problem but it was completely ridiculous! How do you deal with checkers who put far too few items in each bag?

I have asked them to load the bags "heavy" and they usually understand. I hate to have to carry four or five bags for a few items that would have fit into one or two. Like you, I reuse them, but that's not the point!

It's kind of a catch 22, isn't it? Either they overload them or don't put enough in them! I put bags inside of bags since I was actually almost out of plastic bags if you can believe that. I use them to clean the dog poop out of my back yard! lol!

Yes, it is. I don't know why they can't tell how much to put in one. I use them for everything it seems, but mostly to line small garbage cans with. Every time I take something somewhere or send something home with someone, it goes into a plastic grocery bag. I put dirty kitchen linens in one that hangs on the stair rail so I don't have to go downstairs all the time and so on. They're really handy.

I have never met a Walmart cashier who bagged properly! Generally I find they put too much in each bag so the bag ends up ripping at some point. Or they'll put things together that shouldn't be, like something heavy with my bread. Just drives me crazy!

They really should! I mean this is people's food we're talking about. I don't know how many times I've had problems with the cashier's at Walmart over the way they bag my stuff.. putting cleaning products in with food, cold or frozen in with dry.. you just can't do that stuff. What if the glass cleaner leaked and got all over my box of cereal? Then I can't feed the cereal to my family. But if the cleaner was with some shampoo.. then it's fine, no harm done. Frozen foods thaw a bit on the way home.. and they'd make the dry box of food wet, possibly ruining it. I don't spend all that money on groceries to have to throw half of it away once I get home!

They need to have a special class on how to bag! I just stood there watching her wondering what in the world she was thinking.lol! But since it was her very first day I was nice about it!

I find that most of the cashiers will just hand you the bags or leave the bags at the end of the conveyor belt for you to pack, for me this is ok, as I far prefer to pack my own bags, sometimes you will get 'helpers' you come along and ask if you need help packing your bags. I always say no, I am 40+ guy and there's probably someone who needs more help than I do. Occasionally, dependent on the shop the cashier will actually ask if you want help with your packing. Again I always say no. I am quite particular about how I put my shopping away, and I hate being rushed too. I always take plastic bags with me to save the environment, besides some shops actually reward you for bringing and using your own bags!

It fluctuates here with the store. Some stores do all the bagging for you and others expect you to do it yourself. I do not mind doing it myself. Using your own cloth bag is getting more popular here, hopefully it will be more popular soon!

Here the mall will not offer the plastic bags for free any more. Perhaps it is not so convenient, but I still support it since it is good for our environment. I usually will have a cloth bag in my handbag. So I don't need the plastic bags from the supermarket. It is already my habit to use my own cloth bag. I like to do something that is good for our planet.

A few years ago my relatives lived in another country and we thought it was absurd that they had to pay for bags to carry your groceries in. My mom even shipped them a box of plastic bags for a joke. But now it really makes sense and I try to use cloth bags instead of the plastic bags. But sometimes I am in the store before I think about it and I do not always have the time to go back and get my cloth bag out of my vehicle. I agree though - it is much better for the environment.

We use plastic bags for some things in our house like storing greens in the fridge and cleaning out the cat litter, but most times we shop we take our own re-usable cloth bags. These are very popular in Australia and you see many shoppers using them to cut down on the use of plastic. In some states you even have to pay extra to use the plastic bags that the stores supply. When I was in the USA I did not see anyone in stores using their own bags. I did not frequent too many mainstream stores, but those I did go in, I saw people primarily using plastic bags. When the check out staff do that to me, I just tell them to load the bags up more. Don't give me more plastic than I need.

I have some cloth bags in my car and just need to remember to take them in with me when I go into a store. I do not have to go in too often, I just keep forgetting the bags! Hopefully I will remember it more often now so I do not have so many bags handed to me! lol

I used 3 to 4 plastic bags on average. If the plastic bag is dirty,I will throw it away.If not,I will store it in the cabinet. When my friends need a bag to restore something ,I can give my plastic bags to them. After that ,I usually felt very happy. In China, the checkers are more likely to give the customers as less plastic bags as possible.I once came back to my school with one bag which was full of food that the plastic bags almost ripped.I think the phenomenon resulted from the checkers themselves. If one bag is enough, they wouldn't like to put your things into an extra bag.Since they thought it was a waste and what they have done had no obvious advantages.Of course, you can obtain more plastic bags when you have requested the checkers. But you'll spend a little money on it.

I have come to prefer taking my own bag, but I forget them sometimes. I also reuse the plastic bags as small trash can liners so I do not have to purchase small liners for my trash cans in the bathrooms. And usually I will try to use as few as possible when I do end up needing plastic bags at the store.

Oh good grief! I tried the self checkout at Walmart this morning and put every item in one sack. I didn't have a lot, but cashiers probably would have used two sacks. Walmart, at least the ones here offer the ability to bring the plastic sacks back to recycle. There's a huge bin at the front of the store where you can drop them in. My grandmother always brings every plastic sack she has, not just the Walmart ones. You're not supposed to do that, but hopefully Walmart recycles them somewhere too. lol

Hello, neighbor! I have taken some of the plastic bags back to the Walmart to be recycled. I usually use them for small trash bags and for cleaning up my back yard though! That was one reason I chose to not say anything - I needed some doggy poop bags! lol! They will never be wasted here for sure!

A lot of them do that, as a result I have way too many bags.

She may have been nervous due to her inexperience on her first day working as a cashier, i can overlook on that, i will not take offense at all. The most i will do is to take couple of items out of my several plastic bags and place them into those near empty plastic bags, so that i don't have to carry too many bags while getting out of the store. I will just return those unuse bags to her personally. It is not a big deal at all. I am sure she will improve over time in using the proper technique for bagging customers' items.

I sort of rearranged some of them as I went, but mostly I put bags inside of bags as I placed them in my cart. I just watched and wondered what she was trying to do. It was really kind of funny. But I am sure she was nervous!

I do exactly what you do, I start to rearrange the stuff I brought. I hate when they put one item into one plastic bag. It does not make a bit of sense. I too will reuse my plastic bag but I truly miss the paper bags so much. With the paper bags you can fit so much more in them and they seem to be so much more sturdy then these cheap plastic bags. I love when I get to bag my own stuff because nine out of ten times the bagger does not due it to my liking.

I miss paper bags too! Some places around here still have them. I always felt like they were stronger than the plastic bags. I need to go back to using my cloth bags anyway. I just keep forgetting!

Over here, most of the time cashiers only do registry work and there's a bagger boy at the end of every counter. Plastic bags for years had already been banned in our city so small to medium purchases are placed in those brown bags of different sizes while larger ones are placed in carton boxes and tied. Nice to see you again, we were friends at the old Mylot if I remember right.

macdingolinger I think it's nice that you didn't say anything since it was her first day on the job...perhaps she noticed what you did and will learn from it. I have a strange situation..we have several Walmarts...the one on the other side of the freeway now charges for paper bags and has eliminated all plastic bags. It's .10 per paper bag...The other 2 Walmarts use plastic and paper bags and do not charge...this is Cal so is anyone surpised...

It's not so odd that they charge for bags several places do that now. But it is odd that two stores in the same area have different policies! I think we will most likely see a lot of places who will start to charge for the bags as a push to get us to use the cloth type bags.

Tell them that you need all your items in two bags and no more. Before the packing starts you should instruct them to avoid time and waste.Tell them you preference of having few bags when you have more items.Carry a bag made of jute or paper,in order to avert carrying things in plastic bags.Hope these steps will help you.

I didn't say anything since I knew she was brand new at it. Plus it was a way to restock my small trash bags! lol. I use them to clean up the dog poop in my back yard and for trash bags in my small trash cans. So they are not wasted by any means.

I could deal with that a lot better than one who puts chemicals in with my food! I have stopped to tell a manager before that I don't want to eat food that has been carried home in a bag with cleaners. Although I wash my produce before consumption, the chemical could leach into the food and not be removed by washing. A box of rat killer in with my veggies is just not appropriate!!

Lol! I know exactly what you mean. I would have said something if she had done that - but then of course I do not buy any chemicals mush anymore. Since this was mostly food items I just let her struggle through it because I knew she would have to figure it out for herself just like I did! Plus I needed some more bags and if I just took a handful they would call it stealing!
