The Rice trick actually worked!

I basically submerged my old, sad Blackberry into a bunch of water on Wednesday night. I figured it was completely fried, as it was not turning on despite everything I was trying. I decided to use $200 I didn't have to buy a new one because I Figured this one was a goner what with the fact that I completely submerged it. So, I bought a Samsung Galaxy and I'm just about to open the box and get the hang of things... And meanwhile, just for the heck of it all, I put my soaked (but dry) Blackberry into a bowl of rice, and today -- this morning, when I woke up, for the heck of it all - I put it on the charger, and what do you know - it works like a charm? I knew rice was very absorbant but I have tried this in the past and it did not work. I just can't believe that it actually worked! So, everyone, have you done this before and it worked? Especially right after you bought a non-refundable phone for too much money? LOL...Such is my life!

Just think of it as, it was time to upgrade anyway. This way it wouldn't feel too bad. I've heard that before about rice, and I've been saving that tip, if and when I do drop my phone. Knowing me, it's bound to happen.

Fortunately for me, I have never had to use rice to dry put a phone that got submerged in water. I have heard that it does work, as my grandson got his phone wet, and my daughter immediately put it in rice, and it still worked after that. I don't know what it is about rice, but I guess it absorbs the moistur and that is why the phones seem to work afterwards. I have heard the key to it though, is not to turn it on while it it is still wet..I hope that i never ever have to do that, as I have an expensive phone, and I don't want to ruin it. Take care, and have a very good day.

I know it works because we would put rice to our salt shakers in order for the salt to be dry and would keep it from being moist with all the humidity in my area. It does work and I can see you have had first-hand experience. But I sure do hope that I wouldn't need to be in that position - ever! hehehehe.. Have a great mylot experience ahead!

oh wow! thats amazing! i didnt think it would actually work. good for you! did you just put it on top of the rice? you didnt take it apart? was the rice cooked? ive had my phone fall into water a lot of time and i usually ended up putting it out to dry, it would take around 4-5 days before i use it again, it still does work though, but the rice sure does do the job faster huh. thanks for this.

I just saw this today on "America Now" which is a program I watch in the mornings. They said to take the phone apart as much as you can, and submerge it into rice and let it go overnight. The rice would absorb the moisture and your phone should work. I'm glad to know you already tried this and it did work...amazing, but I'm glad to hear it's a true story.

Hi maezee, I am glad you found the trick. It is old trick. It works because rice soaks the water and moisture from the phone. You did a wise thing by putting it in rice and not tried to on it to see if it worked or not because it would have short circuit and then be useless for ever.

One of the bigges mistake people do is to try to see if the phone is working or not as soon as they drop in water. First phone has to be dried before checking or it would short circuit as Agrim said. I had put a blog on this about a year ago which told dos and don'ts when you drop the phone in water. Here you can check that http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2743327.aspx#1_16518095

Maezee, This is very neat that you got your costly blackberry to work again. Yes I too knew of the trick but never had misfortune to put my phone in water. Also I do not have costly phone but cheap old Nokia phone so I do not know if I drop that in water, then I would need to revive it or not. But good to know that this trick works.

I have heard about that trick, but never really tried it. I just thought that it wasn't true. But if you said that it worked on your phone, then I'd keep that trick in mind.
