Baby clothes - figure out sizes

My Grandson will be a year old on Saturday and I buy him clothes from Carters online. I asked my son (which might have been a stupid thing to do) what size I should get for him. He told me a size 12 mos. My Grandson was a preemie and very tiny when he was born but he's done so well that it looks like he's caught up to where he's supposed to be. What confuses me is there are 12 mos sizes and then you have 1 yr sizes which really confuses me. He is 1 year old but wears size 12 mos. what's the difference. 1 yr and 12 months seems the same to me! Then they have toddler sizes which he is a toddler so do I get his clotes in toddler sizes? Yesterday I got the package from Carter's and looking at them I'm wondering if I should have asked my d/i/l about the size. Can anyone relate? How do you figure out what size a baby is so clothes will fit him right?

They are pretty much the same size it's like 24 months and 2T's they are pretty much the same size so it doesn't matter. It's not stupid to ask what size he is because he could be smaller or larger. My daughter for long time was smaller and depending on who makes the clothes she will or won't fit in it for months. My son is the same way. He is 5 months and fits in 6 to 9 months clothes. now 9 months clothes are way to big for him but 6 months can some times be too tight and 6 to 9 months clothes can be a bit big or tight on him. I rather people ask me just in case then get the wrong size. My husband grandmother did that to us and our daughter and she wears been wear 24 months since before Christmas.

I think I should have asked my d/i/l but she's always so busy so I asked my son when I caught him on fb. I buy all of my Grandsons clothes at Carter/Oshkosh because they are a trusted name and have good quality clothes.

I can tell you Carter's and Oshkosh tend to run on the bigger size of kids. So they will fit but have room to grow in and last a bit longer. I get both all of the time from family.

I used to play safe, I would always buy clothes that were actually older than the baby was, that way they could grow into them, if you bought them and they were too small you had the problem, unless of course you kept the receipt and they could be taken back to be replaced with a bigger size. Babies grow so fast as do children, so I find it simpler to buy the bigger size.

I usually buy them a little bit bigger but for some reason I didn't this time because he needs clothes that fit him now. I always save the tags and recipts in case my d/i/l wants to exchange them. I leave that up to her.

The only way to be sure is to try them on the baby. The hardest part is that you can't even be sure that the baby will grow into clothes - my son is broad across the shoulders, so he never really fit some clothes, and my cousin's younger son never fit size 5 - he grew from a size 4 to a size 6 in about 2 weeks.

yes, at this age they grow so fast! I keep all the tags and receipts in case she wants to return them.

In my home country baby clothes go newborn, zero to three months, three to six months, six to nine months, nine to twelve months, twelve to eighteen months old and eighteen to twenty four months old. I imagine your grandson needs the one year old size. He could also wear size 12 to 18 months old clothing. He must have grown lots since his premature birth. Good luck.

yes, he has really grown these past few months. It was a month before they even got to take him home and he's just thrived since then. You would never know he was a preemie at this point.

I don't think I've ever seen a 1T, only 12 months. Does Carter even carry 1T? Usually it goes from 12 months to 18 months. The difference between regular and toddler I believe is in the length. If you are buying him clothes for the summer, I would ask your DIL to be sure. When I used to buy clothes for Lucy I would buy them to fit her in a couple of months. Her birthday is in February, but I would get her clothes for Spring and Summer as she had enough clothes to wear until Spring came.

I got him clothes that will be good for him for winter and spring. Jeans, onesies and like a jogging pant. That's what my son asked for. I'm sure they will fit him.

The difference between baby sizes and toddler sizes. I know, it's very confusing. Generally speaking, baby sizes are a little bit wider to accomodate diapers. Toddler sizes are usually a little looser fitting because, toddler means walking, and they need to be able to move easily. I used to work in a clothing store, that's how I know.

When I need to know what size clothes my grandkids are up too I always ask the mom. Remember mom's know best. I always thought 12 months and one year as the same. My granddaughter who turned one on December 31st, I brought her size 18 months for clothes. Not that she is big for her age but so she can grow into it. If you get a size 12 months or one year he will not get to wear the clothes for long because they grow extremely fast at that age.

If I recall correctly, they don't actually start making toddler sized clothing until a child wears a size 2T. With that said, I think that your son is probably right in saying that your grandson wears a size 12 months. When both of my children were a year old that was the size that they wore. In fact, they continued to wear the size that matched with their age until they were about six years old. Actually, my son is six-years-old now and is able to wear either some size 5 clothing and some size 6 clothing, for him it really depends on the length.
