How should I re-pay my taxes?

Briefly to state that I messed up my taxes for last year so I had to do an amendment. However with the amendment it shows I owe money. I've been told it takes them some time to process the amendment (3-4 months). I got my state refund for this year and I want to send the money in for what we owe. So the question is am I better off with a cashier check as then I won't have to worry about keeping track of it in my check book? Or do I send a personal check so that I know it's been processed and received by seeing it clear my account? I know such a simple question.

The IRS has no problem with personal checks however the money would be sitting in your account until the check clears. It might be easier on you to get a cashiers check that way you don't have the money sitting in your account until the IRS gets to it. In my office I was told that the typical wait for a refund on am amended return is 6-8 weeks, so I would guess processing one with a balance due would be about the same.

I get wanting to know when it is processed. I would just hate having the Mindy sitting in my account that I couldn't use as well. I see your dilemma.

That's just it, I'd like to know that they got it by seeing the personal check clear. Yet a cashier check would keep me from having to wait on keeping enough money in my account all that time til it clears.

I don't get it. If you write a check and subtract it from the check register, how is it sitting in your account? I mean, I know it's there but my accounting tells me it's not and gives me a real balance of money that I have available once I subtract the checks I write, the cash I get from the ATM, etc. I guess maybe we use different accounting methods.

I have to pay taxes every year since my income doesn't come from employment. I set up a payment plan--I'm gradually getting so that I can pay it all at once next year-and I pay by personal check. I have a record that way and can get copies of the checks in case they decide to be jerks about it. Also, when I send in the last check I can write "paid in full" on it and if they cash it, it is paid in full no matter what they say later, it qualifies as a legal contract that's been satisfied. Pay by check and write "paid in full" on it. That way you are protected.

Personal check or cashiers? TY for the tip! How do you get a payment plan set up? I might need one for federal but not sure I want to bother. But money is so tight lately with my hours being cut til the busy season comes along or I get a better job.

Use a personal check. To set up a payment plan just call the number on the billing they send you. You used to have to talk to a real person and they were good at humiliating callers, asking all the ways they can borrow money from friends and relatives, even suggesting pawning or selling your possessions or borrowing against your house. But now it's automated and you don't have to go through all that crap. Just be sure you know what day of the month you want it due on and how much you can pay because you'll be using your phone's buttons to enter that information.

Does it say that they accept personal checks? I think a cashier's check is better.. more official.

It didn't say. It said to just put your SSN's on your payment, 1044x on it and where to mail your payment to.
