Have you ever known a cat that likes to eat dog food?

If you've ever owned a cat, you know that they can be rather finicky. Not like a dog where it'll eat pretty much anything...and I mean anything! Heck, some dogs even eat poop. Talk about gross! However, my mom's cat (that I took in a few months ago after my stepfather passed away) isn't very finicky at all! In fact, when I gave him some of my chihuahua's dog food, he gobbled it all! I've gotta say, I've had plenty of cats in the past and they never did that! Hmm, could it be that he thinks that he is a dog? What about you? Have you ever known a cat that likes to eat dog food? (By the way, for those of you that may be wondering why I have my mom's cat, she can no longer care for him herself as she has dementia and lives in a care home. )

I know cats who won't even eat cat food. Or people food. That is a very different sort of a cat. Be glad.

I've never seen a cat that would eat dog food. Heck, most of the cats I've lived with have turned up their noses at an assortment of foods made for cats before settling on one of the more expensive options!

Yep, I have a cat that loves Cesar dog food, the Porterhouse Steak one. That's okay, but then I have a dog that loves Fancy Feast dry cat food....I used to let him eat it, but now NO WAY because I'm worried that's what may have put him into kidney failure. (He only has 2 teeth left so he likes it because it's small.) The vet tech told me that dry cat food is terrible for dogs because their bodies have a hard time clearing it. So ever since he got back from the vet, I managed to find him a dry DOG food that is small enough for him to actually eat...it's called Purina Pro Plan Plus Toy Breed Puppy. Doesn't get smaller than that! And he likes it.

Just this morning one of my cats was eating out of the dog food dish! My cats actually aren't very finicky, the trouble is some of them get upset stomachs very easily. I have to be really careful about what type of food I give them or else there will be cat puke all over the house! Whiskas is the best for them, but I've been having a heck of a time finding dry Whiskas anymore. We've been trying a bunch of other types lately to see what they can handle. The dog can only eat Blue Buffalo or else he gets really bad bumps on his face and his gums and ears get red.. we think he is allergic to something in the other brands.

That's so funny! Maybe the cat is showing how superior he is . . . if a dog can do, certain a cat can too - ha ha!

Yes, the stray cat that once came near our kitchen was fed with dog food by my mother-in-law and it did ate all of it . Maybe he was so angry not to even notice that it's dog food .

Or so hungry. I have to say that when Taillight, Prissy and Diva came to us, they were eating "crap" food. The first two gained to a healthy weight and Diva lost to one.

Firstly, I'm so sorry you have to go through the loss of memory your mom is suffering, I know how that feels ........... now as for a cat that eats dog food, well could it be that your parents had simply been feeding him whatever they happened to have before your dad passed and you realized your mom was suffering? I remember when mom first started forgetting things, she'd forget that one of her cats was actually her's and wouldn't let the poor thing in at night .... it took me a while to realize that was happening, I was totally unprepared for her condition.

That's a possibility, though I doubt it. That cat was one of the things that she could remember even after it was determined that she had dementia. By the way, that wasn't my dad. He was my stepfather through marriage only...

Rygel and Taillight both will eat dog food, but a cat can't survive on dog food because it doesn't have all the nutrients in it that they need.

Yes, my cats are often caught snacking on my dogs food... Dry food even.. and sometimes vice versa.. I will catch the dogs at the cat dish.. I usually let them. every once in awhile isn't bad.. but if they ONLY eat dog food, it can be very detrimental to their health.. they aren't getting all the nutrients they need Taurine.. and it is an added nutrient in cat food but they wont get it if they only eat dog food..
