PC Holiday Poem

I have a little holiday tree, Which holiday I dare not say. I must celebrate multiculturally, In case you’re offended in any way. To the shops for holiday gifts I’ll trudge, The holiday clock keeps tick-tocking. Still there’s time to make some holiday fudge, And hang our holiday stockings. So have a cup of holiday cheer, We won’t name that red-suited myth. We’ll still be jolly, have no fear, Though it’s just December twenty-fifth. Say “holiday”, so no religious themes are stirred, No mention of swaddled babe in manger lowly. Though, I think we’ll need another word, Since Holiday means a day that’s Holy.

Political Correctness can be quite absurd Especially under these conditions There is no harm in an innocent word That refers to our country’s traditions I do not live in a non Christian land Or some distant far off isthmus So in England I shall proudly stand And declare this day to be Christmas

@ElizabethWallace I never hear mention of Hannukah here, but I do have the same attitude towards other festivals and traditions. I have no problem with Ramadan or Chinese New Year and therefore expect to be allowed to celebrate mine.

I say Merry Christmas to everyone. If they reply Happy Hannukah I smile and say thanks.

The "War on Christmas" (sigh) is being waged by a tiny, almost insignificant number of people and businesses - it's more like a playground spat than a war. As the comments here clearly show, the holiday is still Christmas to almost everyone and we're still free to call it that if we choose to.

You are absolutely right because the concept is promoted by an extremely small minority who profess to speak for others.

They would have a hard time if they tried to take Christmas away from us@troyburns They are trying but it is not working.

@Marcyaz - Who are "they"? I see the occasional story about a silly malcontent who objects to something on religious grounds, but I don't see any concerted effort to strip anyone of their right to celebrate Christmas. I'm an atheist, by the way, but Christianity is a vital part of my culture and heritage and I'd like to keep it that way.

Shhh, or the P. C. crew will ban that word too. I will admit that each if my 40+ years of teaching we played Christmas music in my room, and sang the caroles too. We ate Christmas cookies and Buche de Noel. I was able to get away with all if this because I taught French and German. Culture was part of the curriculum!

You had a great excuse. And there are some aspects that go fine in schools, others get replaced or deleted. But I think we all know what the tree is for.

@Rollo1 One year two boys had part time jobs in Christmas tree lots. They both brought in huge trees for the classroom. We decorated them and donated them to poor families the day we left for Christmas break.

Personally I could care less if someone got offended. See, each culture has their own ways and holidays. So, they celebrate their way I celebrate mine. If it is christmas time I say merry christmas not happy holidays. So what. Nice poem though.

There is the secular, cultural aspect to Christmas, too. Just as everyone has fun on Halloween even if they aren't engaging in the rituals of certain belief systems..

@Rollo1 I know that. I agree. But here where I live, believe me, there is nothing left of christmas. I think our ha=ouse is only one of maybe three that actually follow christmas.

@Rollo1 I cannot possibly agree with you about that. I am an atheist, but that does not affect my attitude towards Christmas or religion. I am very conscious of how important religion is to many people and would never be disrespectful to their beliefs.

@Asylum In the US, some people make it a life's goal to bring lawsuits over every mention of religion anywhere. They must be very sensitive when they are offended by nearly everything all the time. Perhaps it is less so in the UK.

And who decided it should be the end? Why do we ignore other cultures whose years end and begin on other days in other months? That's offensive. Of course, I do love to point out what year it is.

I've always happily said, Merry Christmas. I've also heard Happy Holidays for over 60 years. It's not new and it hasn't replaced Merry Christmas. Now the contrary side of my nature is being stirred up by all of these posts against saying Happy Holidays and I feel like I need to start saying that! My parents often said Happy Holidays. Mainly they were referring to Christmas and New Years. Maybe some of the time they were being polite to their Jewish friends.

I was always more of a Seasons Greetings type when it came to sending a card to cover both Christmas and New Years, which I did often as I was generally late sending out Christmas cards.

i almost donkey punched someone, in line at a department store, when i over heard her say that the tree at her workplace had to be a "P.C. tree" ! I thought, "What the f**k!?" Now, i'm not fond of xmas, but still, let those who love it, celebrate it. if they dont like it, then they should be respectful to those that do.

The significance of many festivals do not strike a chord with the young but they look forward to the holidays anyway as a change from the mundane life otherwise. Earlier times, children used to get gifts on specific days but now they almost demand them and they are easy prey for marketing whiz kids! siva

And no one is offended by Happy Holidays, unless they don't celebrate a holiday at this time of year, I guess. But people do get offended when they are told that certain words are banned.
