For Writers: The Importance of Writing Groups and Social Media

So in a previous post "They're Putting Me to Work" I mentioned how the writing group I am involved with and basically do all the work for, has decided to boost up our presence online and that falls on me. Yesterday I wrote a new year welcoming post, a meeting review post, and a post about "The Muse" written by another member. When I post these I always share them on our Facebook page and Twitter page. Well dangit! This morning I got up to a bunch of email messages. That post was picked up by two different Twitter Dailies. If you don't know what those are they are Daily "newspapers" online where whoever is running them posts tweets they believe are worth sharing. They usually have a specific theme to them. I've gotten my contest tweets picked up by some of these Dailies. I also received a re-tweet on this blog post "The Muse". Because of all this activity I found it necessary to share it with the member who wrote "The Muse". But then I thought I better write an email advising the group about it and about the importance of THEM posting on the blog. If you want to be published, picked up by an agent, or whatever, you NEED to be on social media. You NEED to be seen. It was a lengthy email. Then I saw another email advising me of a post so I sent another email to the group. Then I copy and pasted the dailies to our Facebook page. I also went to Twitter and re-tweeted the posts that advised of the Daily and that @HWG5 contributed. Here is the blog I see someone has added another post since last night (now I have to tweet it and share it on our Facebook page). So if you want to see what I posted scroll down. My pen name is Mary Patricia Bird which is my name on this blog. My beach picture is 4 posts down along with the poem I wrote about a picture of another member. Here are the Dailies that picked up the post: http://paper.li/Lehmanandlehman/1298583883?edition_id=e5560370-c369-11e5-9524-0cc47a0d15fd http://paper.li/StoryDam/1319974679?edition_id=d9167af0-c34f-11e5-a618-0cc47a0d1605 So if you want to write with the hope of being published one day, you need to be on social media. You need to be ACTIVE on social media. You need to follow the right people and organizations. In a lot of cases they will follow you back. So you can't just sit in a corner and write your book. You need to promote yourself before you even HAVE a published book.

Thank you so much for such great advise. That is what I have been thinking to do as well in order to enhance my writing skills and promote my blog. Do you have your blog on your profile page?

It's not actually my blog but the blog of our local writing group, which I basically run. I manage the blog, Facebook and Twitter pages. I don't have a personal blog.

@annierose Not in the slightest. We also have a website but someone else handles that.

This is a great post especially for a newbie writer like me. I always have trouble getting reads from Wattpad or Tablo.io since they are the most easy sites that I can use for now.

I know so many writers who aren't on Twitter. They are missing out on exposure for themselves, and connections to publishers, editors, agents, etc.

@Rianel_Lewrej Once a day is all you need if you have a book published.

@patgalca Yeah. if you want a lot of readers, then twitter is your best friend, but you have to promote a number of times, which can take away your time.

Positive exposure is always a good thing for writers. I'm a bit mixed on my feelings about writing groups. Promotion is key! Word gets around even when you don't expect it to-such as my finding out my boss bought and read my book.

I think it's harder to sell books than you would think. That's why I like the support of the writing group. I have bought all their books so they sure as heck better buy mine!

I will focus on one thing paper.li. This is a great service that functions from a person's Twitter list, it enables anyone to create a specialised daily newspaper for one or more of their Twitter lists. I have found that being mentioned in someone else's paper can provide a great uplift for views as that goes 'paper' out to all their followers. and I am frequently followed by others because of the paper.

The really hard part is trying to balance social media activity/writing/sleep/life in general.

There's too much. I don't get enough sleep (can't because of my illness). Today I was going crazy with the emails and blog postings and reposting to Twitter and Facebook, then the last load of laundry needed to be folded and put away while I was trying to throw a late dinner together. When do I really have time to be the writer I should be as a member of a writing group?

This sounds like very good advice. I'm sure some people will be given much to think about with your words. Sounds like a lot of work for you too.
