Bless the Spain and their wonderful weather, the fresh Spanish strawberries have reached our Swiss shelves. This morning, coming back from the Post Office, I have stopped at the grocery store to buy a box of strawberries. I have tasted one, they are sweet and delicious. Tomorrow I am going to make a strawberry shortcake for my birthday. I will find some other ideas to use the others. Do you like the strawberries? Any special recipe to serve them?

Sweet and delicious? I can't believe it! I tried them once but now I never buy the first strawberries from Spain. They're only big and red but taste of nothing in my opinion.

In fact I bought the small ones, the big strawberries are never sweet, they also had the big ones and they were two times more expensive.

Strawberries from Spain are usually tasteless in the UK. Our British grown Strawberries are the best in the world and are beautiful to eat in June. Here is a recipe for you Anna. Slice the strawberries add black pepper and balsamic vinegar a spoon of sugar mix in a bowl and leave in the fridge for a couple of hours. They can be served as a starter or a dessert. When done this way they are delicious. ENJOY! Happy Birthday tomorrow Lovely lady!

Thank you Gary, I know that the best strawberries come from my garden, but until May they are not ready to be picked up. I was able to grow the small wild strawberries that have a very different taste from the big one. I know that balsamic vinegar and strawberries are now popular around the world, this is what my grandmother prepared for us when I was a kid (my Mother family is from Modena)... I have never liked the taste.

I wish you a happy birthday in advance It seems it is not the strawberry season here as I hardly see them in the fruit stores. Now it is the season for watermelon, mangoes, dragon fruits and so on. And the straberries are usually very expensive here. I may want to try to use it to make the ice cream

I love strawberries but I don't buy any until I see the Italian ones on the shelves here. I don't like buying fruit and vegetables (except bananas and pineapple) from other countries. I have seen them here from Spain too but they leave me cold and I will wait. I prefer English strawberries. The taste is totally different as they take longer to ripen but they are really sweet indeed. Happy birthday for tomorrow!

@mysdianait The best strawberries are the little wild strawberries that you can find in the forests, it's a long time that I do not climb up and search for them.

Thank you Diana. The best strawberries that reach our countries are those coming from Spain and I have to say that they are much better than those I find on Italian shelves. It is possible that Swiss choose better.

Happy Birthday @LadyDuck Oh those look so perfect! I love strawberries! We can get them all year 'round - but you can definitely taste the difference when it is and not in season. I like them as is. We also like them in a strawberry spinach salad with almonds (with a sweet Chinese salad dressing).

@LadyDuck I am wondering if our ripened strawberries will come in earlier since we went straight into warm weather! It's usually about May-ish when we hit the strawberry fields at a local farm - but with this strange weather we just may be able to go sooner. But for now they are still not at it's sweetest point. I would love to find some wild strawberries!

I slice them and marinate them in Grand Marnier. Then I layer them with sponge or pound cake and whipped cream in a crystal glass. Quite delicious. A little orange zest is nice in the whipped cream too!!

Sometimes I marinate them in orange juice with a tablespoon of Grand Marnier (or Cointreau), but my husband does not like the taste of any kind of liquor. I will prepare an orange syrup with fresh orange juice and zests for the sponge cake.

May be your strawberries are imported from distant countries, this is the reason why they are not very fresh. The strawberries taste better when they are fresh.

We have strawberries in Switzerland but they are not yet ready now, those who are on the shelves come from Spain, that is a much warmer country.
