Singing in the Car to the Radio

I am one of those persons who will sing along out loud to a song I hear on the radio as I'm driving. In the privacy of my own vehicle, I am a rock star singing the tunes at the top of my lungs, even sometimes playing "air guitar" or "air drums" as I drive along (kids, don't try this at home--it's important to always keep both hands on the steering wheel!). It's sort of like people who sing in the shower, but in the case of a vehicle you have windows and people around you can see you (even though I pretend I can't be seen). It is very embarrassing for my two teenage children to be in the car with me, not only because I am a horrible singer, but because everyone around us can see me head-banging, drumming or singing a tune on the radio! I'm sure I am quite the spectacle to other drivers when they pass me or pull up alongside me at a traffic light! Are you one of those people who do this in a car as your listening along to a song on the radio?

I am happy to give a concert and won't charge a penny. The windows are usually down so if they want to throw a tip my way, I'll accept! Singing loudly in the car is the best way to experience a great song. When my children (all adults) are in the car with me, they sing along.

@moffittjc singing brings me such joy. If nobody else wants to hear what I am singing, they can turn a deaf ear.

@ElusiveButterfly I'm sure my two kids wish they could turn a deaf ear when I'm singing at the top of my lungs in the car! Unfortunately, they are a captive audience! They're always telling me to stop singing because I sound so bad, but I tell them, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!" So far, they haven't taken me up on the offer, but I guess that's just because they are too "cool" to have fun with their dad right now! Awww, the joys of teenagers! lol

Yay, another driver after my own heart! I haven't been brave enough to do it with the windows down yet, but that's only because I live in Florida and it is like 150 degrees outside all the time! Maybe when winter comes (all two days of it) I'll give it a try! I'm sure once my kids get through their teenage years and the embarrassment of having to be seen in the same car as a parent, they'll probably sing along too!

It's natural for us humans to want to sing along, but for those of us who are horrible singers, our options are to sing in the shower or sing in the car! Two places where we can be bad singers without too many people around us having to suffer!

When kids are in the car, it is even more fun to sign and gyrate. Yes, of course, I do this, and did it with my daughter in the car. She always ducked down and yelled, "Moooootherrr".

My kids get so embarrassed when I do it when they are in the car with me! I love embarrassing them, especially when I drop them off at school in the morning! lol

@ElizabethWallace Hmmm...you've given me an idea! Maybe I should start dressing up in funny costumes when I take the kids to school or pick them up from school! I'm thinking some super hero costumes where I have to wear tights and a cape!

@moffittjc I used to dress up in costumes when I taught high school. After school, I picked up my daughter still wearing the odd outfits. She loved it, but couldn't handle me rocking out in the car. Go figure.

I sing along, but I don't do any head banging or play the air guitar or air drums. Good thing you haven't gotten into any kind of accident playing your air instruments.

I tend to play the air instruments when I'm stopped at a red light! I can't afford to be in any accidents!

@moffittjc I'll tap my hands on the wheel to the beat of the drums. When I stopped I've been known to gyrate to the music. That gets the weird looks.

Of course! When I'm in town or at a red light I don't sing too loudly (fear of arrest for noise pollution, y'know), but on the highway, the foot rest is my bass drum pedal and the steering wheel is my cymbal! I've gotta go drive now, you flung a craving on me (as we say in the south). "I've got the Mustang loaded, I've got a wrong to right...."

You get to do something even more fun than singing in a car...you get to sing along to each and every one of those awesome concerts you put on! Nothing beats singing along to a live performance!

@moffittjc We don't really encourage that!!! Not at our small concerts. Some of the big, loud voices might drown out the group and if they were out of tune....

@moffittjc lol! Now that is a site to see! I always sing whenever there is music being played no matter where I am and yeah I've had the occasional times where I pretend I'm playing a guitar, drums or piano lol I can't help it. It's bloody fun anyway!

Oh,yeah! In a heart beat! I tend to turn up the music louder when ppl watch me then I smile and wave! Music always makes me feel good when I see them smile because you never know they just might of had a bad day! Keep on doing what you do no matter the kiddos get embarrassed they will remember you as the "cool"dad! Try it when they bring friends home its awsome when they want to join in! And their friends think your awsome! Have fun! Hugs

I think the funniest thing about when I sing is that I don't know half the lyrics to the songs, so I just will either make up words during the parts I don't know, or I'll stop singing and hum during those parts. My kids laugh at me, because they know it means that I have no idea what the lyrics are!

I'm sure I get laughed at all the time, but I don't mind! If I can bring a smile to someone's day and help them feel a little better through humor, then I'm all for it! Me head-banging in the car might just be the difference between someone having a bad day and someone having a good day!

Oh lordy yeah @moffitjc , I'm one of those. Drum solo, bobbin' and weavin' to Elvis songs, singing to whomever is on the radio or casset tape. And yes, I do get looks; particularly while waiting for a red light.

It's at the red lights where I have the chance to dance, bang my head, play the guitar, and bang the drums, all while singing at the top of my lungs! Which of course is the very place where you have the most people around you watching! lol

Yes, I will admit that sometimes I do it on purpose just to embarrass the kids! They're always saying to me, "Dad, please don't embarrass us!" To which I always respond, "But it is my duty as a parent to embarrass you as much as I can!" lol
