Why I don't write articles on myLot

Canada
July 3, 2016 4:37am CST
For me this is a discussion site. This is a place to hobknob with writers and other people from around the world. It's a place to hang out, say what I think maybe even blow off some steam. I'm not trying to be nose-in-the-air when I say this but I think my serious writing is worth more than posting it all here. Even though you can go back and comment on old posts. I find any writing here has very limited shelf life. There is only so much you're going to earn from an article here and I think my stuff in that regard should do better somewhere else. When I'm here I'm reluctant to read long heavy posts. I'm even more reluctant to read serial posts. I just don't want to commit that kind of time. I work myLot in around the edges of other things I do. I like it here and enjoy the interaction. Please don't feel shortchanged that my best serious writing is always posted somewhere else. You'd have to go to my blogs to find it all.

Don't worry about it; I also think the same, because this is just like a social media site where we just share snippets; just any topic for discussion. I don't like reading very long posts too because of limited time.

Most people here don't, so why give them what they really aren't looking for? I like the interaction both lighthearted and the more in depth. You actually rarely get that on articles.

That's all very well not posting here but if nobody does, no-one would have anything to discuss. My 'serious' writing, such as it is, is all on Infobarrel but I still enjoy posting short articles here. And you must write a certain amount here because I seem to be 'talking' with you from time to time.

I wouldn't call what I write here "articles" though. I write quick short stuff meant to hopefully generate discussion. Bouncing around ideas here could lead to articles that I might write somewhere else.

@koopharper That is the idea of this site. We are supposed to generate discussion. You must adapt to where you are posting.

@akalinus This place is a worldwide conversation. That has huge benefits. I'll try to stick to what it is best for.

We all use the site to suit ourselves - the main thing is that we should enjoy it. I'd never done any writing at all before joining Bubblews a couple of years ago, and now I'm here - I don't use any other sites. I just put out whatever takes my fancy, whether it's poems, posts about my childhood etc. It's just nice for me to have an outlet. Though the main thing I like is the interaction, and learning how other people live and think.

Can't go wrong with interaction. Bubblews and myLot taught me things about writing online. It's all been good for my writing.

Some long posts are worth reading though. But yeah, I tend to read shorter ones.

I like to participate. Longer posts fall by the wayside for me not because I'm not interested but because I don't have that much time to spend on just one person's post in here.

Your writing is yours to manage as it seems best to you. I do not write articles here, and I do not read articles here. This is a social site where I write to socialize.

I am kind of preaching to the choir here because most of the people I following write on this site in a manner similar to what I do. When I'm researching something is when I'm likely to read an article and I search for that independent of this site. Articles from here don't rank very high on search engines.

@koopharper some people share about something they read elsewhere, but forget to state the source.

As I think we only earn from interactions, not from traffic, it isn't really worthwhile posting truly good stuff here.

@egdcltd If you are an excellent writer who is hoping to earn money with your writing it is a shame that really good writing isn't recognized to that degree here. On the other hand a big part of making it as a freelancer is learning how and where to market your work. Throwing it on this site isn't good marketing.

It isn't. Posting short quick discussions that have a lot of back and forth interaction will earn you far more than a well thought out article.

When I first came to myLot, I treated it as an article writing site. I soon found out that I was wrong. People are not interested in serious articles. We can always post them in other places. One of the rules of writing is to write for your audience.

I learned this the hard way on Bubblews. This site isn't the same as that one was but in this regard the principle carries through.

If we were able to garner comments from the world wide web, then it may be a different story too. I've been advised not to post my tutorials here, so I don't although after Bubblews, I've not moved them over to hubpages yet either. It takes so much time to do all of that. I like the way you said you are here around the edges of everything else. If people want to post articles here, that's fine with me, but when that's all they post and nothing about their life, I don't visit with them too much.

@marshamusselman "I've not moved them over to hubpages yet either. It takes so much time to do all of that." - is it hard to use hubpages? "If people want to post articles here, that's fine with me, but when that's all they post and nothing about their life, I don't visit with them too much." - it helps if they add details and examples.

You're right. This is a discussion site and not a writing site. I am also wondering why others write long articles here. I agree that your good articles should be posted somewhere else that is suited for long articles. Personally, I skip to read long posts here, although I read if it's really interested.. I'm sorry for those who write long articles in myLot.

@Macarrosel I think it's more a case of them not being able to tell the difference. Generally speaking they either educate themselves or leave. Trying to help them out by pointing out the difference usually falls on deaf ears.

Most people I know well here have the same approach. I will read something that catches my eye and is really well written. I just don't know anyone who consistently writes at that level of genius.

@koopharper maybe some of them don't know that this is a discussion site. Or maybe they can't differentiate a discussion site from a writing site.

@Bluedoll I've had articles stolen from Bubblews and Hubpages. I try to watch out for it. If find the plagiarizers pay less attention to my blogs.

I wrote quite a few short stories on Bubblews and then had to try and recover the best ones to save them and even then I'd figured this out pretty much and kept it to a minimum. A story that deserves some development is going to end up on Pico's Writing Practice at the minimum. Because it's my site I can further develop the story and post it somewhere else later if I want. I could do that here but I hate pulling material off a site like this once I've posted it.

then and now, mylot has always been a casual discussion site/paid forum to me. i guess "writing site" means different things to different people, so some people come here with certain expectations, then get frustrated.

I've seen people come here and get frustrated. The plagiarizers often post stolen articles not realizing that they stick out like sore thumbs. But I've seen people come here trying to make a real income posting well written short articles. They often don't stick around because the return on their investment in time is poor to say the least.

Articles aren't always meant to get much interaction. Just having something read here doesn't get you far.
