When Your Kids Embarrass You

My sister posted on Facebook today, asking for stories about people's children embarrassing them. I texted her, telling her I was ready for a funny story, and would love to hear what happened. She texted me back that when she found it funny, THEN she'd tell me. Later in the day she texted me back, not at the point where she found it funny, but at the point where she was willing to talk about it. Apparently, my five year old niece threw such a fit in Taekwondo class that they were asked to leave. Now, I know kids are kids, and they will act like the little children they are, but honestly, that would embarrass me too. My sister enrolled my niece in swimming class and taekwondo class. She homeschools Amyra (my sister was a teacher for several years), but she wants to make sure Amyra gets to interact with other children. So far, it has worked great. Amyra loves swimming class, and after her initial reluctance to participate in taekwondo class, she was enjoying, in her words, "getting to kick things without getting in trouble". I think the most I ever embarrassed my mother was when I was four. Me and my six year old sister were in the car with my mom when we read a sign out loud that said underwear was on sale. My mom quipped that maybe she should get that for our dad for his birthday. Fast forward to Sunday school class and my teacher asking what we were getting my dad for his birthday. We told our Sunday school teacher our mom was getting our dad new underwear. My mom was embarrassed, but she had a good sense of humor about it. My dad told me tonight he got a text from my sister this afternoon that read, "I am sorry for anything and everything I did when I was a child that embarrassed you and mom." My dad thought that was hysterically funny. What is the most your children have ever embarrassed you?

I can honestly think of only one thing that was embarrassing. After our second daughter was born we started going to church again because we intended to have her baptized and we also wanted to marry in the Catholic Church. We went up for Communion and when we got back to our seats my 3 year old daughter said in a loud voice, "I want a chip!" We were embarrassed, and laughed too. The people behind us said, "It's okay. It happens to all of us." I explained to my daughter that it was not a chip, that it was bread. Then she hollered, "I want bread!" I can't think of any embarrassing moments with my kids other than that.... not off the top of my head anyway.

@BelleStarr The children at our church know that if they are not to receive Communion than they cross their arms across their chest. Their parents will help them with that and hold them there if need be. And with that they get a blessing.

Well, I am not sure if the guy heard him or not, but we used to live in an area, with alot of military personnel. A man walked by in fatigues one day, and my son said.."Look there goes GI Joe."

Kids are brutally honest.. even when you don't want them to be. Once I was talking to a lady and she was saying how she'd rather have a messy kitchen than a messy car (or vice versa, I really don't remember), but my son, who was probably only 4 at the time, shouted out "My mom has a messy kitchen AND a messy car!"

That's funny. I've got a few stories, but I don't feel its fair to share them online-they are hilarious, but private just the same.

We have no children and I cannot remember that I ever said anything that could have embarrassed my parents.

As a young teacher I often discussed the nature of our school principal/superior with my husband which my younger son heard and blurted out when he was three in front of one such principal, that too at a market where telling him that I called him wicked. I was really embarrassed. My husband still has a good laugh remembering the instance.

many times. usually when I felt they insulted someone by telling a truth. I had a dear friend once that was truly over weight and she dropped by one day and my 6 yr. old daughter at the time said "you should sit on the big couch with mom , you are so fat" I gasped and sent her to her room but my friend said, its okay. shes fine. I understand. a child tells the truth. I nearly cried my friend was just so kind and gracious all the time.

One of my kids went pee in a toilet on display in a home depot store. I was so embarrassed. I took his hand and we left the store. Imagine the sale people seeing pee in the toilet on display.
