Peanut Butter

Not too long ago, I posted a tidbit about peanut butter, as to the FDA allowing bits of insects and rodent hair in the processing of peanut butter. I don’t know if you read that post or not. But, I found a few more facts about peanut butter that might be of interest. George Washington Carver, an agricultural scientist is credited with “inventing” peanut butter at the Tuskegee Institute of Alabama quite a few years ago. It was presented for tasting at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. Another inventor, Ambrose Straub, was there with his patented peanut-grinding machine and made buckets of “nut butter.” It was quite a hit with the public and considered to be a new “health food” being rich in protein and vitamins and not very expensive. Many countries grow peanuts but peanut butter is most popular in the USA. Half of the harvest in the USA becomes peanut butter, either “smooth” (70%) or chunky. This is the fact that surprised me, though. Americans eat about 700 million pounds of peanut butter every year. According to Grolier Inc. “that would cover a football field with a mound of peanut butter 225 feet high.” I have peanut butter in my cabinet. However, my grandson does NOT like peanut better at all. He will not eat it. Very few children dislike peanut butter but he definitely will not eat it.

Peanut butter does so not belong to my childhood and youth! When I grew up in post-war GDR (German Democratic Republic), we didn't even know about peanuts to say nothing about peanut butter. Later, when we moved to West Germany, we didn't buy it because we didn't know it and up to today I've never had it.

@JudyEv I've heard of Vegemite but have never tried it. I don't even know where to buy it.

@IreneVincent I know we could have bought it in Austria at a speciality shop. If you do ever try it don't put it on too thickly. That seems to be the mistake first-timers make.

As a child I loved peanut butter and jam sandwiches with a glass of chocolate milk. Loved it! Sometimes it upsets my stomach but I think that's more the bread. I always have a tablespoon (or 2) of peanut butter to stop my hiccups. Works every time.

I did not see that PB discussion but I knew that all that horrible stuff was allowed in PB. That's why I make my own fresh from peanuts in my local Winco grocery store. They have a machine for almond butter, too, which is yummy. I feel that it's better than the jars because it's fresh and there's nothing in it but peanuts. I cannot imagine anyone not liking peanut butter but my son's wife dislikes it, too.

@IreneVincent I asked them about it and they said they were inspected regularly by the manager and also by the health department. Winco is a very clean store and it's employee-owned so they are very conscientious. I checked with the health department--it's for my grandchild, after all!--and yes, they pass with flying colors every time.

@dragon54u That's good. I'm glad. It's always a concern, when you think about it.

I hope the machines are cleaned often. Fresh is good, but the machines need to be cleaned and maintained.

I discovered peanut butter during holidays in UK when I was a kid, and I have never been fond of it. There is maybe 20 years that I have not bought peanut butter. Matter of culture I think.

I like the chunky peanut butter also. I don't eat it as much as I used to, but it does have a lot of protein and since I don't eat a lot of meat, I guess it would be a good source for me.

I simply love peanut butter - the chunky kind. Some people are allergic to peanuts in some cases, the allergy can be almost deadly.
