So much drama!

This past year I haven't been too involved in Marching Band activities.. My twins started with the Marching Band program in 7th grade, they're now in 9th grade. In addition to Marching Band our school also has a Drumline and Winterguard which are winter versions of Marching band... drumline is obviously just percussion instruments, and winterguard is just the color guard.. The twins are involved in all of these activities. Their first 2 years in it, I was very much involved. I started slow, but eventually got involved in the band boosters who help raise funds for the kids to be able to participate in these activities. It costs quite a bit of money for the kids to have their uniforms and transportation to the shows, and the boosters also help to buy equipment and instruments for the programs. So I was a die hard band booster. Helped out at every fundraiser, volunteered countless hours to work/run these fundraisers. Went to meetings to help come up with ideas for new fundraisers. My husband's job donated about $1,000 to the program.. A year ago they held elections as 2 of the executive board members had to resign as their children were seniors and would no longer be involved in the program.. Two new members were appointed.. Since then the program has been riddled with drama! I stepped back and haven't helped as much over this past year.. mostly because the executive board made me feel unwelcome. When I'd show up to events or fundraisers I felt shunned.. the board members would huddle in a little circle talking to each other and ignoring everyone else. Even at other events like soccer games, I'd see them huddled together. Then they'd walk by me and not even look in my direction. Eventually I found out they were doing this to quite a few of the band parents, who also felt the same way I did.. So I stepped back and helped less, and basically only went to the shows to support my kids.. But each time I got involved I'd hear all about all the drama going on.. how the president of the boosters reamed out our music director and the children of the executive board members are acting like little jerks, like they're entitled or something because their parents are on the board.. The board members used to be very involved, they'd volunteer at the shows to help load equipment on and off the truck.. they no longer seem to be doing that. This past Saturday I volunteered to help at the drumline show, and not a single board member was there supporting the kids. I spent the whole day listening to other parents complain about all the drama the board has been causing lately.. There will be a new election in May. Rumor has it the entire board is stepping down.. Gee I wonder why! Why is it adults seem to cause more drama than high school kids do??

Some parents like the drama. They let things go to their head and they think because they are on the board they are above everybody else. Such immature behaviour.

Funny thing is these aren't the type of parents you'd think would enjoy drama. I was actually quite friendly with them all last year.. then out of the blue I get ignored by all of them. Such a shame.

They never got it out of their systems as children. They never grew up. I have seen it happen in sports and other activities.

because the adults are full of themselves and think they are such hot stuff even high school kids know better lol that is shameful way the board treated you and other parents.

I think they've made more enemies than friends this year, that's why they're stepping down.

Oh I hate the politics of "boards"! I have stayed out of our PTA at our elementary school because of the politics . . . it's such a circus! They have asked me to be treasurer - but no thank you - I'd like to stay out of it and not get caught up in all their drama. You were a valuable volunteer and they could have used your wonderful spirit to help make things happen . . . what nerve they have for shoving folks out of their little board "clique". Well boo on them and I hope the new election will bring in better leaders!!

I hope so too, but I'm probably still done bending over backwards for the program. It was fun at first, but when it stops being fun then it's time to stop helping.

@katsmeow1213 It is work - a lot of work. It could have been fun if they kept up the fun . . . but instead those ugly board members had to spoil the fun.

there just seems to always be SOMEONE who brings on the drama in everything, doesn't it? it's very bothersome when it is the grown ups. sigh. grown ups should know better.

@DianneN Nope, not at all.. and it gets worse. I've just been invited to a group chat by a bunch of other parents that feel the same way I do.

Some parents cannot handle the pressure. It seems weird but it happens in real life.

It's such a great shame when something that was running nicely suddenly becomes fraught with problems. Hopefully the new board members will be good again.

I hope so... It's starting to look like the entire program is going down the tubes. There's drama between all the instructors too
