Are we obsessed with money?

I think money is a tool that we can use in our lives. How we use that tool is up to us. Some people see it as power and respect those people that have a lot of it as a more powerful person. Some people will do anything to get money at all even if it is wrong or illegal. Are we as a people too obsessed with money?

Sadly we need money to live, to eat and to go out to get food the list is never ending. I would call it money for survival in our case. Money can be great though depending on how you look at it.

Its definitely a tool that can be used for good or ill. Its all in the hands of the user right?

@happythoughts Right on in the hands of the user. Hope that user uses it for good and nothing else.

In general, yes, we are obsessed with it and also deceived by it. Money is a great deceiver if we are not careful.

@happythoughts Money is not a problem in itself. The problem arises when we give it more power than it actually has. On a deserted island, a knife would be a lot more useful than a million dolalrs in cash. Yes, money is useful in this world but it is not the end-all.

I think a lot of people are obsessed with money. People have different reason for that, and I think it's more complex than just an obsession with money. As you said, some people see it as power. So those who wish for power might seek out ways to make more money. I've heard a few people say they'd be happy without money and that money isn't everything. Of course, they're right that money isn't everything. Unfortunately, we live in a world where it's necessary. That sometimes means people are seeking all sorts of ways to earn it but often because they need more than they have rather than being obsessed or simply wanting more. It's a matter of balance, I think. We need to respect money for what it is - a tool to make transactions easier (it's much easier to exchange bits of paper and metal for goods, then pass on those bits of paper and metal to someone else for other goods or services than it is to carry around our wares, swapping it until we get what we want! The problem with money is when people do become obsessed. Wanting enough that you can have things you want as well as need is OK. Working so hard you miss out on life or become a criminal to get what you want if you have all you need, that's when it's a problem.

You said it perfectly. We need respect for money as the tool it is. That is such a great attitude about it.

We as people are too diverse for such a general remark. Some people are obsessed with money. Others are not.

Its a statement in general and I think a fair one. For the majority of people there is a strong concern with money. I think that as you take away the luxuries in life that you might live a life that isnt as concerned with it. But then again those sitting in front of their computer here for MyLot arent exactly in a third world country with out luxuries. Is it more fitting that I say that generally those of us here are exposed to a money obsession often? Its not an easy concept to define really lol.
