The Correction Squad - Just A word With You

I am not perfect and I do make mistakes, especially spelling, and at times I will place the wrong word in a discussion. I will also share that English class was not my favorite in school, actually I hated it, and it was always Math for me. So I am lucky I can even read and write. That is why I saved the money I could count and I bought houses so that I could semi retire at the age of 35, its been work but I did not have to spell. Yeah baby! But I do regret not going to law school, but that did not stop me from cracking open those law books and reading the sh*t outta them! I know there are A LOT of teachers here and most are not rude " If I chose the wrong word to explain a situation" Or if "I misspelled a word", sometimes its typo`s and I do actually know how to spell "The." But please be nice and do it in a private way, not in the comment section! Because no matter how much you TRY to make me feel stupid, it won`t work.

We all make typos and I'm guilty too but I just tend to overlook them when i see them. But, I'm not a teacher so it probably doesn't irk me when I see a misspelled word.

When I was an Editor on Bubblews, every post I read, something would jump out at me @andriaperry . Punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, etc. It does it here at Mylot too but unless it's really horrible, I just keep on reading. On Bubblews you had to say something to the writer, but here it's not necessary in my book.

@andriaperry Yes they were (I remember). Even if it would have been minor, I would have just fixed it.

@Bluedoll Even if I had to talk to someone about something that might have been recurrent, I was always nice when I did. Sometimes just pointing something out turned a light bulb on for the person. One of the biggest errors was always: there, their and they're. Once you told someone the actual difference between the three, then they understood.

@andriaperry Yes as you said. I used to hate bosses that I had that would shout and scream in front of customers like that. I mean why not just take us in the back room and be civil about things. And you know that was a boss, but just 'someone' correcting you is just not on.

@TiarasOceanView because of bosses yelling at me or hitting on me at work, is why I BECAME my own boss, I knew how to treat people in public.

I've made a lot of spelling mistakes also, I must have been in the back row of the English class with you! I wasn't aware that you semi-retired so young, you must be awfully good with the numbers to achieve that-so based on that, I'd say that you're more then allowed some spelling mistakes or typos, but I am sorry that you've obviously had this pointed out to you in a rather underhanded way. There is no need for that.

I think I was born business minded, when someone wants to go to a casino I go but I do not spend, I am over asking for the Manager to find out how I can invest , I want a piece of the pie, all I see is $100`s being stuck in a machine and what for? To watch the little things go round and round. Yes, I saved my money, when I got the opportunity I bought, and now after 10 years with a house I flip, so if I invested little, rented it for 10 years, then I sell and make another 50,000 to 80,000 its all profit, even if I am financing under the banks lowest rates I am still making money for the next 15 years. I am looking to invest in something else and get out of the rental house business, I have a few ideas.

I don't take people to task over mistakes, but if it's an obvious typo I may point it out. For instance someone left a comment about 'shirt cartoons' on one of my recent posts, and I was puzzling as to what they were. Then I realised that it must be a typo and she meant 'short cartoons'. When I pointed it out to her we both had a bit of a laugh. But I agree - no-one should try to make anyone else feel stupid.

@andriaperry Some like to show how smart they are - maybe by using phrases like 'one-up-man-ship' that they don't think you will understand.

Because they corrected me in the comments and they used the smiley things and " to make sure that everyone could pick out the mistake. I do not read her anyways, maybe that was why?

I will admit to there being certain mistakes which make me cringe. In those cases, I'll just stop reading. However, if it is readable, an odd spelling mistake can be overlooked. It's only really a problem when something is littered with mistakes in such a way that you feel you're trying to decode a secret language. If I think something is worth reading but a mistake means that the meaning is unclear, then I'll ask. Other than that (unless I've been asked to do so or if it's my other half) then it would be rude to point it out, especially as I don't know if English is the first language, or if someone is dyslexic, or just not very good at spelling.

There are a few people on here who seem to get off on making people feel stupid. I don't care for that at all, and have blocked some. My guess is I have a much better education than the "correctors." If I want to correct someone I try to make the point it in a subtle way so the person doesn't feel demeaned.

People think because they have an education that they are better and make themselves " the teacher" but like its been said more than once, this is not a school. Plus no one takes in consideration that the person writing the discussion may have a couple children or a man child talking behind them AND sometimes those words come out through the fingers and really mess things up

You are so right. Helping members improve their writing should be done privately. Nobody is perfect. The site is not meant just for English native speakers and language experts. It is meant for all people who can make an understandable discussion. Greetings!
