Would you quit a job without giving any notice?

Well it has been over a week since the woman at work walked in and quit. She has not contacted anybody but a few customers at work said they seen her walking around town. I talked to a friend of hers and she said she is still with her husband so it wasn't that. I asked her when she seen her to ask her to call me but nothing. She has not talked to anybody. We all go through bad times but I would never quit a job without giving a notice. I think it is the right thing to do. Her quitting has affected everybody. We all have our own clientele and she had a number of orders on the go that nobody knew anything about. Customers are upset they haven't gotten their orders. It puts a lot of stress of everybody else. It is so busy that there is no time to hire to train somebody and it will affect our vacation time. We are a small company with 7 employees. Nobody still knows why she quit. We are all close at work and we can't believe that she hasn't contacted any of us since she left. I guess you never truly know anybody and what they are going through.

I have walked off a job. Since employers are under no obligation to give employees notices and dismiss them on the spot, I feel employees can fire them without notice.

I have been with the same company for 30 years and only ever had two other jobs. I have never really had a problem but understand what you are saying,

I did when I was a teenager once because the owner told me she only hired me because I was white and she had to hire one white girl. She treated me like dirt the entire time I worked there so I did quit. Other than that, I have given 2 weeks notice before I left a job. That's the right thing to do.

@Happy2BeMe Now I remember I did quit one job without notice. The supervisor grabbed me (sexually). I pushed him away, handed him my hardhat and left. I can't remember if I said I wouldn't be back. And that time I didn't have a job lined up but I was pretty sure about one. The summer job I got to replace that one paid much less, so that really annoyed me.

I can see in that situation why you would walk out. I would have done the same. Yes I think giving 2 weeks notice is the right thing to do when the company has been good to you.

How so irresponsible of her to not inform the company that she is quitting. Maybe she is thinking that if she informs the company, she cannot just go, but be made to at least train somebody for the left order. But that is how it should be. Here, if you will not inform the company that you are quitting, your company can inform the Dept. of Labor and Employment about what you did and be given a bad review that can affect your future employment.

@Happy2BeMe I agree. I wouldn't give her a nice recommendation too because of that, if I were your boss.

Even though she worked here 6 years I am sure the boss would be hesitate about giving her a good recommendation when she just up and walked out without notice.

@Tampa_girl7 It is..that is why were are all still kind of in shock about it. She worked here almost 6 years and then just up and left and not talked to anybody since. She won't answer any calls or texts.

I guess so. Her friend said she is doing fine. She is close friends with both her and her husband. She was surprised too when I said that her she walked in and quit her job.

I would never leave without notice unless provoked by the company. My sister had given her boss a 2-week notice that she would be leaving at the end of the month at one job and once they found out she was quitting for a new job some of the other coworkers and even some of the manager/bosses got really rude with her. They got so bad that before her 2 weeks were up she just didn't show back up for the rest of it. Afterward, they called her some pretty nasty names because she "walked out" on them but the higher ups won't admit to what their workers were doing to her. Jacob starts his new job this upcoming Tuesday and his current position hasn't even being posted (he is just switching departments really in the same company). They were supposed to find someone to replace him before he could leave for the other department. They have known for over a month that he was leaving and they needed to post the job and find someone. His new supervisor at the new job informed his boss that they were taking him regardless of if they had replaced him or not since they had plenty of time to find someone new or start the process anyway.

@Happy2BeMe The place my sister left from doesn't have a good rep for treating employees well. They are one of those places that want you to suck up to the managers/bosses and if you don't they don't like you and will try and make you quit so she wouldn't have worked there much longer anyway. Jacob's wasn't really his fault though because they had plenty of time to post the job and start interviews and it was the head people that pulled him out and he didn't just leave them.

I can see why your sister would have left in that case. Something like that would never go on at our work place. Jacob did the right thing. I wish him all the best in his new job.

Giving notice is definitely the right thing to do. It's a shame that she quit and hasn't contacted anyone.

@dodo19 Me too but I guess she doesn't want to talk to us anymore. One of our fellow workers who was really close with her dropped her stuff that she left in her desk off at her moms house and her mom said the she was okay and that is all that is all the her mom would say other then that she didn't want to speak to any of us so it would be better to leave her alone. So that is it for that!

When I quitted a Job it was always with notice and because I also needed to get paid as well. Maybe she has serious personal problems that she does not want anyone to know or something like that.

@Happy2BeMe I imagine that she will turn up sooner or later if she does want to go back to work. Might be something happening to her that she does not want to say only thing I would think of really.

I did once, I didn't really like the job, but after a year things got to me I caught my boss in a lie and comforted him and he continued to lie - so I told him what he could do with his job. The company folded a year or so later. In my working life I had three 10 year jobs so I did stick with jobs!

It is inappropriate to quit without noticing co-workers and the boss of course. It will just give one a bad employment record.

In the past I have quit without notice. I get pretty severe anxiety about the idea of telling my boss I want to quit, especially if I don't have a good reason, such as a better job lined up or something. In the past I've always quit just because I was sick of the job.
