Woes of Summer

Poor little man

I love summer, I am not a winter fan at all. But one of the things I do not love, are the many bugs that we have to fight off. My poor little seven year old found that out Friday morning. Just because you are not bothering them, does not mean they will not bother you. He was nailed right in the forehead by a wasp or hornet. He will be sporting a prize fighter look for the next few days. Guess he may be just a little allergic to them. He says he can see and breathe, so I am just going to keep an eye on him. One eye is nearly swollen shut poor guy. Have you ever been stung by one? What are your least favorite things about summer?

Ouch! I was stung by 8 or 10 hornets once - they got me in the palms of both hands I screamed so loud they heard me in he next state. But I will take summer over any other time of year. Hope he feels better now.

@mom210 We were on our property in the golf cart, my husband stopped the cart to watch a deer standing about 10 feet from us. Unfortunately, he parked on top of a nest!

Oh goodness, it almost looks like some bully popped him a good one in the eye! All he's missing is the black and blueness and he would have a nice shiner! Did the wasp/hornet get him directly in the eye? It sure looks like that could have been the case!

Naw right in the center of the forehead, but yes he looks like he has gone a round or two. I tried to keep him most of the time, but he sure did get some looks as we went out and about.

@moffittjc Oh my gosh, how horrible! Yes, once you have been through that all the rest is pretty easy to deal with huh? Naw he was just swollen, my biggest concern was making sure he could still breathe well, since it was all in the face area. In fact, when he walked out that first morning and I saw him and squealed, he had no idea why I was squealing about him. He though mom had lost her mind!

@mom210 Poor kid! Was he in a lot of pain, or was it just swollen? One time, when I was 12, I opened a wooden gate that had a hornet's nest behind it. When the gate swung open, it knocked the nest down, which sent the hornets into a frenzy. I was stung over 20 times on my face and chest, and my whole head swelled up like a balloon. After the pain from the initial stings wore off, the only discomfort I had was due to all the swelling. Thank goodness it didn't last too long, because I was embarrassed to be seen among my friends! Oh, and interestingly, after being stung that many times at once, I was never bothered again after that by bee or wasp stings. When you've been stung by 20, getting stung by just one is no longer a big deal! haha

I am so sorry poor guy, those little bugs hurt. I am allergic to mosquitoes bites and during summer this is a serious problem.

Oh, my! Uhm... just ignore me calling Family Services, Kim... I don't have any trouble with bees, wasps or hornets, although one of my brothers has to keep an epi-pen on him at all times because he will die if he gets stung without having one... I keep an epi-pen on me at all times because pollen, dust and whatever else is out there keeps me looking like your son... Since you wrote this discussion last summer, I am sure he doesn't look like that anymore, right?

@mom210 Oh, I am sure he's afraid he'll get stung again, Kim! I agree, poor little guy! SMH! BTW, I do know a way to stop pain quickly... Pain from bee stings and such can be controlled by applying a hot-as-you-can-stand washcloth for a few minutes. (Not hot enough to burn, but as hot as can be stood. A hair dryer set to hot, again, not long enough to burn, pointed at the wound will also stop the pain. You will need to do whichever of these treatments about six hours later, but twice is normally all you need to do the treatment.) Heat from either source breaks down the active ingredient in bee, wasp and hornet stings, as well as the reactive poison in many different pain-inducing plant stings. You have to repeat the treatment because venom or pain-inducing poison "hides" a bit of the gunk and it comes to the fore when the pain is stopped by heat. I've heard, but never tried, stopping other types of pain that way, too. Usually, I forget about this remedy and take pain killers before I remember.

@DaddyEvil Thank you for the tips, Hey got any tips on poison ivy & oak. I have one that got into that mess and has it all over him. Got some calamine lotion but it really does not seem to be helping much.

I have been bitten in the past, a long time ago. I don't remember if I blew up like your son did. Two of my kids raise honey bees so I have enjoyed doing that with them, but completely covered, even my face.

We have talked about having honey bees, I don't know if he is allergic to them though. I know it was a wasp that stung him not a bee, but I do worry maybe he is allergic to wasps bee and thing else that flies and stings.

@PainsOnSlate Hopefully we will have health insurance in the summer, maybe I can get him tested then. It would be good to know exactly what things he needs to stay away from. right now, he is terrified of all flying things. Can't say I blame him

@mom210 You can get him tested for allergies, I did it recently for myself and love knowing the only thing I am allergic to is grass - no more mowing for me...As a child I had a billion things that would effect my skin and breathing. But the available of testing was not there.

Oh, that looks awful I hope that swelling goes down soon. When I was a crossing guard I had my sign up and when I brought it down a wasp landed right in the crease of my arm. When I bent it he stung me, I had to scrape him out of my arm with my stop sign.

ouch! They can find their way to some very surprising places. I got stung a few days after him while moving my curtains back. Fortunately I am not allergic at all, my hand was red for maybe 20 minutes and that was it. Somehow this summer they really found their way into and around the house.

My daughter would swell up from just getting a mosquito bite. I had to keep benadryl handy for her to take. My nephew is even worse when he gets a bite.

As I look at the storm blowing outside, it is good to think of summer. I have a daughter who is allergic to bee stings and needs to carry anti-allergy medication with her. I have been stung a number of time without any serious problems.

Oh no! I hope he is all healed up by now! I have never been stung (knock on wood) . My favourite seasons are Autumn and spring. Winter is unpleasant and in summer I can't stand the mosquitoes and flies and well any of the bugs @mom210 . I hope the rest of your summer has been kinder.

I agree spring and fall are the best, fewer bugs. I am not an extreme kind of gal. I don't like extreme winter temps, hate to be cold or the extreme summer either when I have to sweat.

I'm sorry he got stung. I hope it clears up fast. Let's see - my least favorite things about summer - heat, flies, mosquitoes and any other kind of bug, rain, muggy clammy can't get cool, yep - everything except the flowers. I do like flowers. I'm a winter person. You don't have any of the above in winter. And lots of beautiful white snow.

He had me wondering if I might be since I could not remember the last time I was stung. Well I was stung the next morning by one hiding in my curtains, as I was opening them, it was gone within an hour. So he does not get this after me. Must be from his Daddy's side.
