Up a Creek Without a Paddle

I'm not sure if the title of my discussion is a common saying anywhere other than in the United States (and Canada?), but it describes what happened the other day when I was ready to pay for my groceries. I had no cash, so I was going to write a check. Then, I remembered, my dad and his wife had been out of town, and my dad had called needing a favor. His neighbor had hired a guy to redo his (the neighbor) fence, so my dad hired the same guy to put a new gate on his own fence while the guy was doing the work for his neighbor. Long story short my dad asked me (the man had said he would collect payment the following week, but changed his mind) if I could write the guy a check for the amount, and when I checked my bank account I had just enough to cover it. So, I realized at the grocery store I didn't have money in my bank account to pay for the groceries, and therefore couldn't write the check. No, problem, right? That's why I have a credit card for an emergency. Only I couldn't find it. I was wondering what I was going to do when I remembered the $100 American Express gift card I had previously won (I wrote about this is a previous post). It came last week and I had it in my wallet. I was so thankful! I just pulled that out and paid for the groceries with that. By the way, my dad paid me back when he got back into town, and he never asks me to do anything, so it was a pleasure to be of help. I should have had my credit card with me. I rarely use it so I know I would have been fine to use it then. Have you found yourself up a creek without a paddle lately?

Your title was just right for your post. I have been there a few times myself. I try to keep a twenty dollar bill stashed in my wallet but lately I keep forgetting to replace it as I used the other one.

@AmbiePam It is something that I can easily forget. I tucked it away right after my last comment to you.

Whew, thank goodness for that card! We do use that saying up here also, so I knew what you meant with the title. One thing that differs from here and there in your post is the use of checks. We cannot use checks at grocery stores, they haven't taken them in probably 25 years. But, if you find someone to take one, and you don't have enough in the account, it takes a couple of days for the processing, so you have time to juggle your balance and make a deposit to cover it. I actually work for a company that sells checks to US customers, and I am the most unlikely person to sell them because of my ignorance on the subject. But that's another story!!

That's so interesting because I had no idea. Years ago I could have written the check and had a few days to put money into my account. However, now, this grocery store takes your check, electronically fills it out, and takes the money right from your account.

@AmbiePam That sounds the same as how our funds come out right away when we use our debit cards. And if you don't have enough in there, then you'd get that message and you'd be stuck washing dishes as the old saying goes!

I have been in many tight situations and usually I can think my way out. Good exercise for the brain.

I had gotten a free sample of something months ago. The company sent out a survey to those who got the sample and asked for us to take a short survey. The respondents would be entered for a drawing for that prize. It was a 3 question survey and I turned out to win it. I really needed that pick me up.

What luck you had your Amex gift card on you! I always carry cash in a secret compartment in my wallet for emergencies and always pay for groceries with my credit card. I like collecting air miles. lol
