I am a dummy

We went to bed around ten last night. I suddenly woke up a little later. I heard this weird noise, kind of a thump, thump. It sounded like it was inside my wardrobe closet. I was really puzzled. So, I woke hubby, asked him to listen. He looked at the clock and told me "Happy New Year". It was the neighbor setting off fire works. I forgot. So I told him "Happy New Year, and we went back to sleep.

@TiarasOceanView Good to see you here. I was looking for your discussions and it said you have none. I haven't been around much and wondered how you are doing. Have a good year!

I went to bed around 12:30 and about 1 AM, I was awakened to the sound of fireworks that must have been very close but they lasted about 30 seconds.

I just have one pretty near neighbor, but he would have been out on the other side of his house setting them off. So it was not too loud.It did not last too long, either.

Well I'm glad the fireworks weren't inside your closet . We were up at midnight and had been hearing fireworks all night long anyway . . . I assume it had been going on til much later (as it always does) but we were able to get to sleep and not wake up to it.

I was thinking more of a squirrel in our closet, as my daughter in law mentioned the other night that there were squirrels in their walls.

What can I say, I had been asleep. I am not sure that it was what woke me. More like I got up to go to the bathroom and heard it.

@rebelann And it has been so cold I did not want to do it. I think the reason I thought it was in my closet is my daughter in law says she has squirrels in her walls.

Oh yeah, that's when even the most common noise seems foreign @GardenGerty I hate when that happens.

I heard some fireworks at around 5:30 P.M yesterday. I was not pleased, but fortunately, did not hear anymore .

I imagine, if it is dry they should be. I do not know if we have any ordinances here, or if we have anyone to enforce them if we do.

@GardenGerty If people are used to being able to do something, they sometimes really resent it if the activity is suddenly made illegal. We haven't been allowed fireworks for many, many years so mostly people are okay with it. You can't even buy them unless perhaps you get them from overseas online.

Some of my neighbors set off a few, too, but I was still up doing a crossword puzzle in bed. It sounded like they were right under my window. Made me jump. Thankfully, it didn't last long.

@GardenGerty Thank you for letting me know, Heather, I did gather something was going on, but at that time I was caring for my 2nd failing vet 24/7 and very seldom online. Hubby's first stroke was in 1999 and miraculously he made a full recovery before he had the next one and passed in 2009.

So you sleep through the year? I though people wake to welcome the New year? Not a custom in your country?

It is a custom, but hubby and I have had some health problems and went to bed. We heard others celebrating with fireworks at midnight.

@GardenGerty I get that. When I was younger I would be excited to wake and celebrate the New Year, but as age and health threats emerge, I find myself putting 'rest' before celebrations too.

Not much fireworks here - in some places they have been replaced with lightshows with laser, so they are not scaring pets, like dogs and cats so much..Very good - no point in scaring the animals if some want to have fireworks.
