August Starts With A Celebration

Today 1st of August is the "Swiss National Day". On this day the Nation celebrates the creation of the Swiss Confederation, back in 1291. The month of August gets its name from the Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar. In several countries, this is the hottest month of the year. The birthstones of the month are peridot and the onyx, the flowers the gladiolus and poppy. Among the many "unofficial" celebrations during this months, I am sharing some: 9th - Book Lover’s Day (this is for me) 13th - International Left-handers Day - celebrate if you feel discriminated 15th - Relaxation Day - I will, I surely will. 18th - National Bad Poetry Day - try your chance, write a poem 26th - Women equality day - an important day to celebrate We have a saying for this month: "If the first week in August is unusually warm, the coming Winter will be snowy and long." Well, this is the case, it's unusually hot and I do not like the idea of a snowy and long winter. Any special plan for this month of August? The picture is the Google Doodle for the Swiss National Day.

Hope you had a lovely Swiss Day! It was cool here today, but I'll be in Florida, so who cares about the winter. Lol! We are celebrating our wedding anniversary this month and have a full calendar for the month. Sigh....

You married on a very hot month. This year the Swiss Day has been without fireworks due to the heat and the danger of wildfires, but we enjoyed anyway.

Happy Swiss National Day I write Bad poems all the time any way See that bit rhyme Doesn't happen every time The line after this for example Doesn't rhyme at all and it's far too long to scan with the rest of the poem, ruining the whole thing

@arthurchappell It has been the most quiet 1st of August I can remember. A strong thunderstorm has started around 8 PM and has lasted until early morning. After all I appreciated.

Your poems are very good Arthur, you do not need to write on bad poems day. No fireworks for the Swiss National Day this year, the wildfires risk is too high.

@MarshaMusselman When we were young in Italy (Catholic country) the left hand was considered "the hand of the devil", the teachers did not allow kids to write or eat using that hand. I can use both, because of the accident I had to my right arm, I was unable to use my right arm for almost 2 years.

I am also left-handed but I don't feel discrimination because of it. If anyone gives me grief I just tell them at least that makes me smarter than they are. I'm sure you've heard why that is before?

I don't like that saying either as it is quite warm today. The weekend will be very warm, higher than 40 C. So my goal for August is to survive the heat.

Happy Swiss National Day! For us, there is not a whole lot of celebrating this month (except that my family still needs to celebrate July birthdays ). The kids start school in a couple weeks. A left handers day - well I should celebrate that one!

No special plan but today August 2 is the day two of my friends were born. One lives in Canada now and the other is busy as a school administrator. I will send them my greetings later. On the 11th, is my French friend's birthday and these days he's one of my closest friends even though we live far from each other. 14th there's another birthday, she was one of my closest friends back in law school and she's in Switzerland now. She's married to a Swiss. Finally, the 25th is supposed to be my mothers 73rd birthday. It makes me wonder how she might have looked like if she were alive.

You have many celebrations for the month of August. It was a quiet 1st of August yesterday here in Switzerland, due to the heat wave in many Cantons fireworks were not allowed, I do not know if they had a better celebration where your closest friend lives. Your mother would still look very pretty, I am sure.

Happy Swiss Day! Today is only the very first day of the month, and its a bit on the cool side here, but the long weekend coming up is forecasted to be very hot. We'll see if this old saying still holds true today with our global warming.
