Ah, THAT man!

At one of my new workplaces, there was this young man whom I was very sure that I had met/seen him somewhere else before. But however hard I tried to remember, I just couldn't figure out the where or when I had first seen that guy. I had given up, telling myself, - 'perhaps I had met him before while working for company X, Y or Z?' - 'perhaps I bumped into that guy in the past at one of the local stores?' - 'perhaps the guy just had a unique look like others from his ethnic group?' I happened to chat to him one day last week. Suddenly he did something unusual: he was twisting a very pretty eternity ring on his finger. AND that was when things clicked (not right at once though): he had done exactly that, twisting that same ring with a serious (sad) look on his face, sitting opposite to where I was (standing) on a crowded train during peak hours half a year ago. (I had thought he was about to give his wife a surprised gift that day in the form of that eternity ring, I was wrong then! Must be a ring given to him by his wife instead. The ring looked very new to me.) Have you ever seen men wearing eternity rings? Do you like wearing rings and finding yourself twisting the ring around and around unconsciously? (I do it often (consciously) re: playing with my rings if I happen to wear any at the time.) --- NB. Eternity ring is often given to spouse by the other spouse (from some wiki on the internet, after one year of marriage). Mine never gave me one after our many years with each other, hence my fascination with it . --- Images from PixaBay (I did use Windows Paint to play around with a Pixabay pic & a pic of a 'very low price" eternity ring from China, found on Ebay) . Hope it is OK with the rule of this site.)

What is exactly an eternity ring? I only wear my wedding ring and I usually do not play with it.

I think its more of a commitment ring, maybe they are not married but committed to each other and maybe live together.

Long time ago, I think eternity ring was given to the wife by loving (and prosperous) husband after a fair amount of years marrying to each other. (Well, he must have run out of idea of what to buy for the wife, so people created that idea .) These days, I read from the internet, after one year of marriage is good enough to give each other an eternity ring (and perhaps after that, they could safely divorce each other??? )

I am most of the time lost into my thoughts and I do not recognize close friends in the streets, except if they jump in front of me. On the opposite, I can recognize a shape of a Roman ceramic that I have not seen since 30 years. I guess I have a higher interest for pots than for humans.

You would recognize someone if they happened to hold a ceramic vase or bowl etc (in public place) then????

I wasn't sure what you meant by "eternity ring" so looked it up. Here's a pic for others who also don't know.

Thanks for that. I thought everyone knew of this type of ring, so didn't show the pic. I just added one now. (Can't wear that type of ring and washing dishes or mixing dough for bread all the time I guess? )

Is an eternity ring the same as a wedding ring? I only wear my wedding band - I have the jeweled ring stashed away because I'm afraid of losing it. I never take it off, but it is so thin that I can't really twist it (it's a part of me, almost feels like a tattoo ).

@YrNemo Prosperity rings ! Yah, I guess my fingers are pretty much the same - my family has small and slender fingers (well, and kinda crooked too ).

Your finger size remains the same? Mine has swollen up (fatter ) with time. We had to get the second set (bigger to fit our prosperous status ).

@much2say Now, that is an interesting idea, "prosperity ring" after "eternity ring", "wedding ring", engagement ring" etc...

I lost my engagement ring years ago and have another in its place. I have a wedding ring and one Vince bought me for my 70th. I'm not wearing it at the moment as I 'lost' for several days while we were travelling so I won't wear it again till I can get it made a fraction smaller.

@YrNemo I am 72 and Vince is 71. I'm not really into jewellery, not if I have to pay a lot for it. I bought a really pretty watch for $1.96 landed from China and it works beautifully. I might suss out their rings and buy myself a dozen.

@JudyEv sshhh... I got a pile of them here, from Ebay! They mix with my expensive genuine gold rings, and now I can't tell which is which any more . (Perhaps the people who sold me the genuine gold, happened to con me by selling me fake rings from China too? )

You are not 70 yet are you. You are only in your early 60, correct? (Vince should get you an Eternity ring, consider that you two have been with each other your whole life almost. )

Oh no, he is a young guy who doesn't know me at all. I remembered seeing him on the train only because of his unique pretty ring which he wore & played with.

Our wedding rings are our eternity rings. My husband's has loosened up so I just keep it in our jewelry box. But I wear mine when I go out of the house. I think there was no eternity ring before but the wedding ring as we call it.

@SIMPLYD I have a few of those rings (not the exact type, just a half eternity ring because I like to collect pretty things ). I don't wear them however, they don't look OK on my fingers. (Perhaps I should try to get a RIGHT one? )

I haven't seen a man wearing an eternity ring. I don't wear much jewellery, it tends to irritate me. I am happy you eventually figured out why he seemed familiar to you.

The next thing to figure out is, why does that guy look eternally sad like that. (In my books, guys don't wear pretty rings, so his wife must have gone or something???)

@sol_cee Only thought about it at home when the two images suddenly superimposed. He seemed to be sad, perhaps something to do with that ring so perhaps I shouldn't mention it. (But being me, I will try to find out the mystery, why he looked sad, why he had that pretty ring. I thought men wore only signet rings! His is not, and it was not on his pinkie finger.)

Funny isn't it, that one stranger whom I saw doing something strange on a crowded train, would happen to be at the same workplace as me one day.

If the ring was not too new, I would have thought it came from his mother... (or perhaps it was hers, and he just got it re-puffed? )

@aureliah I could go get a cheap ring from China (ebay), and wear it to work, then pretend to be surprised and begin to compare to his... Perhaps he would tell me where that ring came from???

So you each noticed the other during a train ride six months earlier? I've only ridden on trains inside playgrounds/amusement parks, so was more interested in what was going on outside the train than the other passengers. On occasion I have spoken (quickly) with someone else on the train but not enough to have remembered them by the next day. I certainly wouldn't have been focused enough on them to have noticed them playing with a ring they were wearing! If I am not the driver of a vehicle then I am immersed in a book so pay little to no attention to others around me. I find it remarkable that you each paid attention to the other enough to remember the other person at a later date.

Did you manage to get any money worth out of that ring when you sold it? I have found out that jewelry tend to worth practically almost a fraction of the true cost the moment it got out of the store. Very disappointing.

I don't wear jewellery often but sometimes I'll twist/play with a ring or earring if I happen to be wearing one for some reason. I have never given jewellery to a man.
