You don't need to yell...

Canada
September 24, 2018 3:28pm CST
I can read you just fine. Have you ever read a discussion or comment/response from someone who goes overboard on the exclamation marks? Whenever I read something that ends in 4 or 5 exclamation marks, I feel as if I'm being yelled at. When every sentence ends in that many exclamations I have to wonder if the author has taken their blood pressure pills. Yeah, I know you wish to make a point and you obviously want to be heard, but could you maybe just tone it down or make use of the emojis or something instead of yelling in my eyes/ears/face? Thank you.

!!! I can be a 3-er . . . !!! . . . but I don't mean to be yelling . I don't know why I've gotten into the habit of using explanation points! (See, I did it again!) (and again!).

Exclamation points, have never been, my problem. Some people, do say, I have an issue, of knowing where, to put commas. I don't, see it.

Spamming exclamation marks might be useful if you need to reach a certain amount of characters. "Your discussion is too short." "Is it okay now(?!)x1000" Otherwise, yeah, I feel they're yelling and making the vowel at the end last longer.

All caps is often used to show that the writer is yelling.

I think the more exclamation marks the more the writer wants you to see what they are trying to say and added some emotion to it.

Exclamation marks in abundance, capital letters in the title and even in the post as well as a smiley after every other sentence (once I counted more than 30 smileys in a post!) --- what is worse?

Smilies are friendlier, but yeah. They too are annoying when one would suffice.

I use a lot of exclamation points because well I like exclaiming things because I get excited haha I am not a fan of putting emojis in posts and hardly ever in comments, I use mechanics how they are supposed to be used.

I don't have a problem with exclamations when they are used in proper context.

I am guilty of using exclamation marks in my comments as well as in my posts. However, I seldom raise my voice. Its just a way of expressing enthusiasm on the writer's part, it should offend anyone.

I am guilty. I use them as a way to express my feelings in writing, although I’m pretty soft spoken in real life.

@Starmaiden I hear ya! I hope I'm not that bad, but my husband did feed both cats tonight.

@DianneN I can understand them when they are used in context. But so many following a statement like; "I fed the cat!!!!!" makes one wonder if feeding the cat is a rare event in that household. Then again; "I'm not wearing any underwear!!!!!" is too much information.
