Why Isn't My Hair Grey?

I am 62 years old. Since I hit about 40 I have been watching my friends's hair all go grey. Even my daughter, who will be 40 this summer, colors her hair to cover the grey. My younger sister, who is five years younger than I am has considerably more grey hair. I know that hair turning grey has to do with the body running out of melanin. I just wonder why I am running out of it so much more slowly than almost everyone I know. It's not that I mind the delay, but I don't think I will mind my grey hair when it finally comes. After all, I will be in good company. I am including a photo that I tried to take of myself. It's not very good, but you get the idea. Do you have grey hair, when did it start to turn grey?

I have quite a few greys. Not sure I am ready to embrace it though.

@norcal I am going to be 62 this year. Age happens as does grey hair. LOL

@ElusiveButterfly It certainly does. Other aspects of aging have caught up with me faster than the grey hair.

Do you feel that you are too young to have grey hair?

Were your parents like this too? My mother's side most were not getting gray until their 40s . . . my father's side started grey in their 20s (my cousin was all gray since before 30!). For me I had a grey hair or two since my early 20s but things weren't truly noticeable til I hit my 40s. At 50 now, I have "streaks" of greys - but I like the minor salt and pepper look as I also have black hair.

@norcal Sometimes I feel like I could be Cruella de Vil - but mine isn't as dramatic as that. More like Pepe le Pew . In any case you are fortunate to have your hair color without the greys . . . looks like you have great skin too. I would never have guessed you were 62 - not even close!

@norcal I noticed that - in lots of available colors these days! I won't be coloring my hair at all - it's coloring itself . I would be happy looking like that even in a fuzzy pic !

@much2say Some people put those streaks in their hair on purpose! Thanks for you kind words. The picture is a little fuzzy, so maybe that's to my benefit. I guess my skin is pretty good, but it does have it's lines.

I'm nearly 73 and, to me, my hair doesn't look that grey but in photos it seems to look greyer. I'm much too lazy to be bothered colouring mine. I just go with whatever it wants to do. :)

@norcal Thanks. I've never been one to be bothered much about my hair although I used to have it permed for years and years when I was working.

You are right, it looks pretty grey in the photo. Sometimes different light affects how it looks. I think your hair looks quite nice, and I've always been a fan of the natural look.

Do tell? Are you totally grey now? It seems like it's not as big a deal for men. People think they look "distinguished." I'm sure you are very handsome.

Many say if one doesn't gray a lot, then they might lose their teeth in old age. I'm not sure if that's just a myth..

You have 62 years? Incredibly. You look a lot younger. I have maybe a couple of gray hair are still not very visible, I'm 36 years old.

Well, thank you. You are kind. It sounds like you are about average in the grey hair department. I hope you are happy with the way you look, however that may be.

My daughter started greying in her twenties, I guess. It looks like silver threads all through her long dark hair. I think she gave me my first grey hairs by breaking her arm near the elbow on the playground in third grade. When we did not have insurance. My hair is grey in chunks. I use henna on my hair if I color it at all. It gives it a nice reddish cast and no root grow out.

Silver threads sounds pretty. I guess most parents have those stressful moments. I used henna on my hair a time or two, many years ago. It made it feel really strong and look shiny.

Oh i think you should be happy that you don’t have one. Many dread to have it because it’s aesthetically not good to look at and it just means you’re getting old already. . Plus scalp becomes itchy and dry when white hair starts to grow. The natural oil in scalp tends to stop and growing white hair will make your hair itchy as it grows

@norcal I think you should be happy you don’t have that yet. Everyone who has would be coloring their hairs just to hide it.

Just because I don't have grey hair does not mean I'm not getting old! I've told my kids this. Don't think I don't have the same aches and pains as everybody else my age.

I am in my 40s and I have started to get grey hair. Most of my hair still has the original color, but there are some grey strands. I dye my hair sometimes, not because I want to hide the grey hair, just because I like it better that way. I also dyed it before my hair started to get grey.

My husband's mom had been dying her hair since he was a kid. He once asked her what her natural hair color was, and she said, "I don't know, and I'm not about to find out! Seriously, It's your hair. There is no right or wrong thing to do with it.

I have found a few strands that seem grey, but not very many. I am only in my 30s. I say ask not want not. I hope my hair doesn't go gray for years. I don't know that I'll ever dye it to hide the grey.

Of course, if I were your age, I would probably not be wanting to go grey quite so soon. I can see those few white hairs around the hairline under certain light. Once I saw them I thought, here we go, it's going to start happening now, but no, that's been a couple of years ago. I've never been one to color my hair, I've done a few highlights, but that was about the extent of it. I will never try to hide my grey hair.

@norcal You know, I am not quite sure what all is involved in going gray. I've heard that the quickness of you going gray depends on genetics and heredity.

I’ve had a strand or two since my 20’s, I dye my hair though so it’s not noticeable. When my dad was young, his hair turned completely silver before he was 30! It always looked very good on him though.

I'm not 40 yet. I think my mother's hair has gone grey, but she colors it. She had talked about getting a silver color hair dye.

My friend's mother has always kept her hair platinum blond. She stopped dying her hair, and it was white. She was telling me how she quit dying her hair, and nobody noticed.

You're lucky to have slower growth of grey hair. I am 57 and still have black hair. There's about 3 strands of gray here which are there since I was in my 30s

Thanks for saying so, but I'd rather FEEL 30 years younger. If there is a secret, I don't know it. People say you get grey hair from stress, but I've had plenty of stress in my life.

You are very lucky. I have some gray hairs but mostly at the back where I couldn't see them. I colored my hairs twice a year.

I guess your hair wants to remain "young at heart." I'm sure genetics have a lot to do with it. My grandfather who passed away in his 70's never had a gray hair. The reason why has to do with the pigment in one's hair cells and the melanin it contains. If your around long enough everyone will eventually lose melanin over time and it will turn gray, white or silver.
