Making winter bearable

Ready or not, winter will soon be here. Already, the night temperature is close to the freezing point. If I was a bear, I would hibernate till spring. That would be an easy way to survive the winter! What have you found in your experience that makes winter a bit more bearable? What are you doing to get ready for winter? I can think of a few things: A good heating system Some warm clothing and blankets A good pair of boots Don't just sit there, move around, do some exercise

That's probably the best way to prepare for winter by skipping it all-together and going to where there is no cold and freezing weather most of the time.

Snow! That makes winter more bearable. And -5 to -10 degrees Celsius, not around zero 'cause that means slush, sleet and ice and normally wind from all directions. The car has winter tyres, so I'm ready for winter to come. Doesn't seem like the autumn is done yet though.

@Torunn I'm sure we will have more snow than we desire. I always wished for a little snow in the city but a lot of snow on the mountains for the skiers. Everybody would be happy!

I think we have similar winters. If we know how to deal with them and make them fun before we know it they are over!

@1hopefulman Yes, proper winters are no problem. Warm clothes, shoes, winter tyres and make sure you don't fall on the ice :-) Hoping very much for snow this winter, but they're predicting slush

Good thing that we don't have winter in my place. We just prepare a coat or a sweater to warms us a little from the cold breeze that comes from the Northern part of the Earth. I love the cold season as it makes life bearable for us after having almost all of the months having a hot and humid climate to bear. I am most certainly looking for those days that I could sleep soundly at night and not sweating from the heat.

@1hopefulman Yeah I guess it has advantages and disadvantages the only advantage we have in here is that we do not need to prepare that much for our clothes since the cool weather is bearable and do not need a lot of layers coats and clothes, gloves and boots to warm you up.

You have a very different weather than we do. We have to start preparing for the long cold winter with below freezing temperatures. Enjoy your mild winter!

All of those things plus a good book or movie to watch. I have 'onesie" pajamas that I wear.

Yes, pleasant entertainment can make the freezing winter more enjoyable on days when we prefer staying indoors rather then venturing outdoors.

@1hopefulman Yep. I love snow, and wish we had more of it (we only get one or two snows a year, and sometimes not a significant amount) but I still love being able to look at the snow from the comfort of my home with a book in hand.

@ScribbledAdNauseum We get a lot of snow and so we have to find ways to stay warm and dry and I find my ski pants does wonders.

So you do like the bears and skip the winter all-together by hibernating. It would be nice if we could really do it!

They come in handy! I also found that soaking my feet in hot water for about 10 minutes before going to bed very helpful.

I like it when it is a few degrees below +-0 C, it is easy to walk outdoors with warm clothes. If the roads are too icey, I have soles that keep from falling

My best winter solution is warm, savory foods and a heated mattress pad. It is like sleeping on top of an electric blanket. My heating system is adequate but I do not have the boots yet.

The coldness is only on the outside. Warm up the inner fires by reading more of your favourite book, the Bible.

True! I'm not one that likes to stay indoors all the time. I want to get out a bit each day, no matter the weather and so I have found just the right clothes to stay warm. Even now, I'm itching to get out and so myLot will have to wait till I get back!

@innertalks I find that when I'm walking that I warm up and especially if I run a bit. I can't run too much as I get tired. When I was doing cross-country skiing that really warmed me up.

@1hopefulman Yes, when you move around though, you tend to warm up too. You can keep warm outside by thinking warm thoughts. When we think all the time, oh, it's cold, very cold, what we feel often follows our thoughts too, sometimes.

Excellent! Yes, waterproof boots are very important for slushy snow weather. If we are dressed warmly we start to enjoy winter and then it is not too long.

Sorry we don't have winter in the Philippines. We do experience cold in the month of December till February. To combat that cold weather we wear jacket or sweater and cover our ears.
