Our friend has been laid to rest

It took nearly six hours to get from our home to Ravensthorpe, Western Australia, to attend the funeral of an old friend. That included several stops. It was a big funeral as the family had spent many years in the area although the couple had moved to the coast a few years ago. We met with many of our old friends and it was really nice to renew acquaintances and catch up with all the news. The adults were all a little older and the younger ones were sometimes hard to recognise as it’s been a few years since we were there. The brother of the deceased was also a friend of ours. He passed away in May from cancer but because of COVID, his funeral did not follow the usual pattern. Instead, everyone parked their cars round the perimeter of the town’s football oval. The cars faced into the arena just as they would if they were watching a match. The deceased had been a keen footballer. After a short ceremony in the middle of the oval, attended only by the immediate family, the hearse made a circuit of the oval in front of all the cars. It then went on out to the cemetery, again with only the immediate family following. It’s been interesting to see how people have adapted to the COVID restrictions. The photo is of the road we travelled but taken on a previous trip. There was a cyclist on the road that day.

Glad your trip went well, and you saw lots of old friends, and gave the departed one a good send-off.

We always say with wakes, that it's a shame the deceased can't join in. Our friend would have loved his so yes, he got a great send-off.

@JudyEv Indeed, some people have started having parties near the end (especially those that know they don't have much time left due to incurable disease) just so they can see all their old friends while they are still alive!

@Fleura A group of friends talked one day about having a 'Clayton's wake' - a wake before you actually die. Everyone thought it was a great idea but no-one wanted to be first!!

@JudyEv When you have so many problems, you cannot enjoy anymore what you liked, it's not life.

Thanks, Anna. He'd been crippled with arthritis, had had a heart attack and was on oxygen much of the time so he didn't have a good quality of life.

I think so too. I think many have been quite surprised by what they've been able to achieve despite the restrictions.

Wow it is sad to witness that the usual ceremony will have to change because of COVID. In here, the body will never be seen by anyone anymore they are immediately sent to crematorium and you will receive the ashes no more wakes and vigil anymore and burial will proceed after.

The trek sounds like it went well - sorry again about your old friend. The brother's ceremony was covid adjusted, but quite appropriate for the footballer!

@JudyEv Yes, quite creative and meaningful. If it weren't for covid, it may have been like any other traditional service.

@JudyEv The road looks very empty except for the cyclist. So I take it you guys had to sit in the car and watch from the car. Could you go to the cemetery and sit in the car there too?

@Hannihar No, there were no limits. We had to sign in at the door but that was all. The signing in would allow authorities to contact people if someone came down with the virus.

That was a long trip. It's good that you're able to spend time with old folks back there in spite of a not so happy source of reunion.
