Apron Anyone?

I believe those were more popular back in the day, but l don't recall my mother or grandmother ever wearing one. I myself have never worn one and l am not sure how many women or men in these present times wear them while preparing food and cooking in the kitchen. They are a must for chefs of course - along with a hat. Or anyone preparing large amounts of food for a function or celebration might wear one. Have you ever worn one when cooking in the kitchen? Would it be just for style or a definite purpose?

I have a few that were gifts and have never been worn. Growing up all of my family wore one in the kitchen. My Momma, sister and Grandmother.

It has definitely faded in popularity like so many other things.

@Kandae11 Yes it has and they make so much sense to use. Most stay in too big of a hurry to use I think.

I have worn aprons but mainly when I had jobs working with food. A few of them were proper ones, but many times I have worn disposable aprons. I don't own one myself and I don't recall ever wearing one at home (although I may have done but just forgot). My husband does own an apron, although he doesn't do any cooking! I don't remember my mother or grandmother wearing aprons (although, again, they may have done and I just don't recall). I think one auntie used to wear them to make cakes. She made lovely cakes.

@Kandae11 I mainly wore the disposable ones when working with children. We had to wear them while preparing food but also for changing nappies/diapers.

I am glad you mentioned the disposable ones. Now those would be very convenient.

I do wear one when I am cooking something especially messy, like working with flour or something. They come in handy.

@Kandae11 It can get everywhere, and is a real disaster if you are wearing black pants...

I wear an apron when I cook, to keep my clothing clean, but also to keep the food clean when I work on a dough.

@Kandae11 The apron must be clean, particularly if you wear it to prepare pastries and dough. If you wear one to protect your clothing from spills, it less important.

Yes, there is a dual purpose - keeping your clothes clean and the food clean. Therefore the apron should be very clean.

I think my mom wore an apron when I was a kid (I have vague memories of it), but she doesn't really cook so much now, so she doesn't. I do occasionally wear one - especially if I know things could get messy (like with oil splattering). But no way just for style .

Yes indeed, preparing and cooking some foods can get messy if one is not careful.

@Kandae11 I used to have an apron and hat but never used them so we gave them to the thrift shop when we moved this last time.

I recall my nephew wearing one with the chef's hat last Christmas. The occasion was a small party for a few relatives and friends and my nephew was preparing jerk chicken and other goodies. I still haven't got around to asking him where he managed to find the apron and hat.

My grandmother always had an apron on when she was in the kitchen. My mom had quite a few and I remember them being more on the fancy side. She would wear them on holidays when we would have company and she didn't want to spoil her clothes. I don't wear an apron and I don't think I ever did

@Kandae11 I think I kept one or two of my moms fancy aprons but they're packed away somewhere. Her aprons were more of a fashion statement than for keeping spilled food off her good clothes.

Perfect for when you have company and the possibility is there for spills on your good clothes. I would go for fancy too with pockets which would hold my phones and keys.

My mom always wore her apron and so did I when I helped her. I'm starting to use one again. Saves changing when guests are coming

I cover myself with anything that can help protect my clothes while cooking or washing. However, if it is just a quick cooking or quick wash, I don't need any then.

My mom used to wear one when she’d come home from work, and make dinner. She wouldn’t even change out of her suit dress (she worked at a bank when I was really young) before she’d put on that apron and start cooking.

Even more reason to wear one - straight from the office to the kitchen.

I should get one, especially for baking. I hate when flour spills on my clothes. I plan to bake carrot cake and oatmeal cookies as a side business. I love baking.

I’ve only used an apron a hand full of times. I’m sure that I have some tucked away that were given to me over the years.

I have a full-length Christmas apron I have not used in ages and for the memories I have one of those tied by the waist aprons that was my mom's from the day I was born. It probably should be a museum item but I keep it around for the memories,

My mother always wore an apron, usually the type with a bib. Vince wears an apron when he cooks too. He is a bit of a messy cook.

Great!. Nice to know people still take the time to wear them. Definitely an asset for those of us who might spill a little too much.
