I wish that we could do something to help this mother...

I was just looking at a news story about a mother in Serbia who apparently has never been able to take her now two-month old baby home because the hospital is holding the baby 'hostage' until she can pay her hospital fees. This is so sad! :( The story goes on to talk about how the woman had no health insurance in Serbia, and no way of raising the money to pay the over 4,000 in fees. Now she has fallen ill with worry about her baby, and has lost a lot of weight due to being upset and worried about her child :( How awful... I wish that we could do something to help this poor mother out :( You can read about it here, if you want to know the rest: http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_2193312.html?menu=

How sad, don't the hospital know that they would be beter off financially to release the baby. The expense is building up by keeping baby and there would be no expense if they did not have baby. It is immoral to keep baby hospage for payment. They should have know she had no way to pay before they took her in. Good luck to her.

thats harsh. its hard to want to help others in different countries. maybe if it was closer to home i might be able to do something. maybe people down there are helping her and giving her a hand. hopfully she has family there that are kind enough to raise money for her as well. i would think she would be able to see the baby and to know if they were taking good care of her. i mean, isn't it costing the hospital more to take care of the child anyway??? it is a sad story, but what much can we really do.

Well I can not believe this is for real, how can they get away with this. I want to know what this world is coming to, it is a disgrace and someone should step in there to sort this and give this poor Woman her Baby. There is nothing we can do, Love. I wish we could do to, but what?

You know, you're right. It would be impossible to track her down too. That would be the hard part.

Is this for real and not another scam? 16,000 mylotians could donate .25c of their earnings. If we found a way to get the money directly to the woman we could let admin take care of the donations and they could send the money to a reputable charity. Just a thought. It could be flagged under new alerts and people could donate if they want to or not...Just a thought.

what does this hospital get by keeping the baby? how many are they holding and where? do they auction them off for bills after a time? do they have older children living at hospital going to school and such because parent's couldn't pay? this is mindboggling?? and saddam was the worst bush could attack?

I find it hard t believe tt a hospital would hold he baby as collateral for her debts. I have never heard of an institution holding a living beaing as collateral. I think that is sad and really disturbing.

How sad, how inhuman to keep a mother from her child all for the love of money. That is sad and sick.

The bible says love of money is evil and this is what I would call love of money more that love for human welfare.

Reading stories like this make me grateful for where I was born. I think we should all be grateful for the rights we have, not just in the states of course, many countries and it's citizens are blessed to have rules and order and laws to protect them and thier children. I will say a prayer for this family, I wish I had the money to help her.. who knows, maybe someone out there will provide it for her. It's a nice thought at least.

I am amazed the the hospital would be allowed by law to do this ....the poor woman must be ill with grief ... you would think thatthe hospital ould just cut their loss and let the woman have her child ..as I am sure they are paying to care for the child and pay someone to keep care of it so they will pay out more in that after a while so they would be better off to just let the baby go home with its mother ...crazy things going on in this world to day ...

my heart bleeds for the both of them. in our country, we dont do this kind of treatment to patients who have nothing to pay. it is really human cruelty what we cannot anything if their country permits practices like these. i guess the only thing i could do to help is to pray that their hearts will be touched & would be compassionate for the mother & child.

That sounds really bad. I can't even begin to imagine what I would do if someone kept me from bringing my baby home from the hospital.

My heart breaks when I read about things like these. How can some people be so heartless and keep a woman's baby. Its just plain cruel and will definetely affect the child when it grows older as it will be missing out on the initial mother's love and care. I wish there was something i could do and if anyone know what we can do, please let us know

Wow. I can't believe that this can happen to people. (Well, obviously, it happens regardless of whether I believe it possible, but I just would not have imagined something like this.) For a hospital to put money ahead of the well being of a child? It must be very difficult to live somewhere where there is no public health insurance. We take it very much for granted here. The last time I was at the hospital, I was there for two days (one in emergency), and was given medications, as well as had a scan done, and I didn't have to pay anything. (The only thing you pay for is if you want a phone in your room). Of course, I had to pay for my prescriptions once I got out, but that's easier to handle. I wish this care was available to the mother in this story.

Being this is another country, they probably have every right...It's very sad and my heart goes out to her and her baby...I know if that was here in the USA, someone would help this lady to get her baby back... I couldn't think of a hospital keeping my baby from me. I would be very upset... Sad story, but realistic...My heart goes out to her..and hopefully she get her baby back.. :'(

I think Government should have some policy by way of which one can get aid from the Government and later on the person can pay back by doing some labour.

It is possible I guess. If well donated just 1 dollar that we earned on here, then she would be fairly wealthy by serbian standards... but you just know that no-one here (or maybe just a handful) will do that. If there was a charity fund or account created for her, then it would most certainly be possible, but that has to be created by someone who knows her personally or professionally (like the journo who reported it)... That's why I could be a journo, I would see someone like that and end up giving her the 4000 out of my own pocket.. i'd be broke if I saw too many cases like that (and let's face it, the world is full of sad cases... I wish and pray we all could live nicely without any problems). But really it's the Serbian governments job to step up, but you kow they won't... Thanks for this, really touching. Love and light.

That is so horrible.I can't even imagine what i would do if i was told i couldn't take my babies home. Surely using a human being as a hostage isn't legal. That poor woman.
