Do you tip when you go to a sit-down restaurant and order take-out? I typically don't, but I usually get dirty looks. Are you supposed to tip? I mean, they are not bringing your food to the table, or refilling your drinks, or tending to your needs. You are doing that yourself at home. I guess one could argue that they are still providing you a service, when they took your order and packed it up for you...but if I consider that a service, does that mean I should be tipping at McDonald's? I really don't think the tip is necesarry for take-out....but why do they expect it?

I don't ever tip when I order take-out. I worked at McDonald's in high school (I know a littl embarassing) and we weren't allowed to take tips from people. I figure they aren't spending any time getting me things besides bagging up my food. You could always ask at the restaurant that you are getting dirty looks at if they usually receive tips on take-out orders, ask for a mamager and see what they say.

I'm not independently wealthy so when I get to go out, I usually tip 10%-15 if service is outstanding. You chose to be a server. Sorry if that's not enough. I don't tip for to go or takeout orders.

Rude, schmude. Whatever. Plus, I'm deducting for poor service, to boot. Sorry if that offends you. On second thought, no, I'm not. LOL

10%? I'm sorry, that is rude. Servers get a lower hourly wage because it is assumed that they will be tipped at least 15% of the bill. If you don't have the money to tip properly when you go out, perhaps you should go to sit down restaurants less often. That way, you can tip appropriately when you do.

I always tip for sit down meals as they are serving me the meal and attending to my needs, however I don't tip at fast food places. I was under the impression they aren't permitted to accept tips at McDonald's and places like that. I agree with you if they aren't serving me the food and refilling my drinks or whatever, there's no need to tip.

ok this i can answer my hubby works in a restran. you tip when you order out, sit in, or go to like a subway and places like that. my hubby said the reason you tip a to go person is because they take your order, bring it to you and a few other things. you i never use to do this, but now i do. i also never tipped to well bt now i do that to. i use to tip on how well they did. like 5 buck and 10 if i liked them. but i know they live on there tips most the time and in cali they pay 5 % of what your order totals in takas. so if you order 100$ they pay 5% in taxes on that. so it is good to at least tip them what they pay on it when they suck, but when they are good try and duble or triple that! if you like them leave like 20 or more they remember the people that tip well and they let other people know that you do so then they take good care of you, it is also a way to avoid bad service. now if you did not tip well they also spread the word, so you will keep getting bad service. i hope that helped

maybe that is why they didn't get a tip, because their service was bad. I think tipping is a individual thing. when I go out to eat I pay for my food, if I feel like tipping I will, if I don't I wont.sometimes tips are included when you purchase your food. I consider that as part of the price of the food.by the way it is very rare that I eat out. I prefer eating my own food that I prepare.

Its pretty much the norm here in india to tip the waiters at the hotels and restaurants. But not a requirement but most people do it out of good will. I tip when i have some extra change other wise i don think so. Unless ofcourse the waiter did do a lot of running around for my order i.e., if im out with my friends as such.

I don't tip at fast food type restaurants. I only tip at restaurants where I am actually served, such as a fancy restaurant or even coffee shop. Sometimes I will leave extra change in a tip jar on the counter, but that's about it.

Yes. I tip when dinning in a restuarant. I have been a waiter before when in college. They pay are low and mostly depend on the tips. I usually tip 15% to 20% depending on the service.

I think that there's a tip jar near the counter... You don't really have to tip but it's a nice gesture and if you see that the person who gave you the service is nice tip him/her.

Yes. you are SUPPOSED to tip when you go to a sit down restaraunt, you cheap fool. Wait staff are the lowest paid people in the country, usually making any where from only tips to a full dollar less than minimum wages. YOU ALREADY KNOW THIS! The usual tip is 15% for prompt service.By the way, (I don't suggest you go back to a restautant where you haven't tipped, because theyWILL remember you and you WON'T get good service. I'll bet you are one of those rude people who runs thewaitress ragged with demands for refills and morte condiments ,and things esnt back too!

I don't expect it, but it is a nice way to say thanks for your work. I work at a small locally owned take out/resturant to help make some extra money while going to college. I consider our shop to do a little more than McDonald's and a little less than O'Charley's. We don't give customers dirty looks for not tipping us, but it is also a very nice gesture. When people dine in, we take them their food and get them anything they might need. (Except we don't have to worry about refills, because we serve 20 oz. bottles of Coke products.) So for service like that we don't expect grand tips, but a little extra is always nice. Now, for the take out orders, it is also a nice gesture for the customers to tip us then. We have to spend our time putting their order together, and packaging it NEATLY (like McDonald's does not do). We will usually bend over backwards to make sure the customer has everything they need for their take out order so they can enjoy it completely when they get home, we even sometimes throw in some extras like a free drink. I am not saying tipping is required in any industry, but it is a very nice way to say thank you to someone providing any service to you. It is also a good way to help make sure you get good service in the future. Nobody deserves a tip for doing nothing, but if a person has done more than expected...I always try and leave a tip for them. I always tip at least 15% in a resturant when I eat in, or I leave at least some change for a take out order. I also tip my hairdresser, massuse (any person that makes me look good or feel good), dog groomer, repairmen, movers, bug sprayers, tattoo artist/piercer... If they have done a service to me that I liked I leave them a tip. It's just polite.

Tipping is a reward for good service, it should not be misconstrued as compulsory for every customer that comes in, whether its a take-out thing or dine-in. Receiving a tip from a customer is a privilege, it is not a right.

I'm not an expert on this matter as I only occasionally eat in restaurants. But based on the magazines that I have read these are the rules of "tipping" (if I remember them right, hopefully): 1. No need to give tip if a service charge has been added to your bill, 2. If you are in the US, you ought to give a tip of at least about 10% of your bill, 3. if you are in Europe, giving tip is really not necessary, and 4. if not sure of the tip-custom in that place, it is your discretion if you want to give tip. I think tip-giving is only applicable to food establisments like cafeteria or fine dining restaurants or where there are waiters serving the customers and not in fast-food chains. But then again, it up to you; if you are rich and generous enough, do so. as the saying goes,"its better to give than to receive". hope this will help.:)

Tipping at McDonalds of any other fast food place? I think not. That's silly; why would you tip? There not giving any service other than bagging your food. Big whoop. I'm also being non-partisan because I used to work at Wendy's; I worked there for a long time. Tipping at someplace like Denny's or Applebee's is another story. Sit-down restaurants where someone waits on you, of course you should tip. They're offering you a service so you can sit down, relax, and converse. I also tip pizza delivery people because I figure with the rising gas prices, they need the few extra dollars. I mean, thats what they do; use up gas. Why not throw them a little something?

No i dont tip simply because they are already being payed for what they are doing. No one pays me extra at my work, so why should they be payed extra?

I don't tip when I order take-out. No one has given me dirty looks, fortunately. A lot of people feel entitled to tips, because they don't get paid enough from their employer and so need customers to make it up to them in tips. Here, tips are extra, so staff at restaurants don't feel as entitled or as needful of them. But I know there are places where restaurants don't have to pay as much.

At a sit down resturant I tip, usually about 15% I sometimes tip for delivery people, but not always. For take out, I would not tip. I do not understand why a person would expect a tip on take outs.

There is no rule for tipping as such. Even if it is not a serious issue, I find it as very genuine. Whenever I eat outside, I usually let the other person(s) to decide whether to tip or not, because I always find it inconvenient(not for the money) to do so.

I consider tipping as a mutal service the already work thier its how pleasent they do their job which in fact determines the amount that should be tiped and i like to tip for the fact that there are people who need it more but are in that phase in life were they need alittle help don't we all at some point?

tipping on take out all boils down to how much work that they have to do...typically i tip if i get take out from an idependantly owned establishment.
