Ever had Chipped Beef on Toast?

United States

Grandma always referred to it as Sh*t on a Shingle. It consisted of dried chipped beef in a cream sauce and served over toast. We had it often for dinner time. I tried serving it to my kids when they were little. They weren't crazy over it. I liked glass jars they came in. They made great drinking glasses.

My father regularly had this over the years as I grew up. I only knew it by the name you stated later. It now comes in plastic bag things. Sure do miss those containers that almost everything came in while I was young. Another memory of the good ole days. Thanks for that!!

I loved the stuff. I wonder if it the beef is still sold in jars. I haven't had it in years.

When I worked at a grocery store, they started selling it in the freezer section in pouches, not in jars.

My grandparents used to have chiped beef on toast quit often. I haven't thought about that for years. It was a treat as it was pretty expensive back then. My dad had it int the army for breakfast during WW II I'll have to try it again.

I believe that is where the term Sh*t on a Shingle came from. They served it to the soldiers quite often. : )

I love it! My only problem is my husband. He says it is too salty with the chipped beef and his mother always made it with ground beef. So I get stuck making it like his mother or else I get stuck eating the whole thing myself and have to put up with a sulky husband to boot.

Try washing it. That might remove some of the salty taste.

Oh my god that is so funny. I just said to my mother last night, "we need to use this jar of beef for chipped beef on toast" I think it's been sitting there for a couple of months now...so Yes it does still come in the little jar..lol I also like ground beef in cream sauce with peas and carrots on mashed potatoes....Yummy

My husband would think of it as dog food if I were to serve it to him as a meal. He does like chicken ala king, so I should try this one on him. But I would have to serve it with mashed potatoes instead of bread.

Yes, my dad used to eat this when he was in the army, so for his 70th birthday we made it as a joke. And guess what-I guess we had a bad recipe because it TASTED like sh*t!

OH yes!! My dad made this a lot. Only he would use sausage instead of the chipped beef. (A LOT cheaper!) We would have it on toast, or over "whop" biscuits. (Refridgerator busicits that had to be whopped on the counter to open them--LOL) I haven't successfully made this, and probably just as well, as my family doesn't care for it. Daddy still makes it for me, though, when we come to visit.

I love chipped beef! I don't really like it on the toast, however. I like the beef in the cream sauce on it's own. That's probably odd, but ah well! I am so happy that I can find it frozen. Stouffers makes it (sans bread). When I'm wanting some, I can just nuke and eat.

I love SOS, I make it all the time. They still sell the meat in jars, I bought some around the holidays to make cheeseballs. I also use the Budding sliced beef, it will be by the lunch meats. That makes good SOS too. When I am in a hurry, I will use the country gravy packs, and walla dinner in a hurry.

Yes I have had this! I used to eat this at my parents house when I was growing up. My parents still eat it. It is pretty good - nothing that I want to eat all the time - but very tasty.

I haven't had this since I was young. My Grandmother served this a lot. It brings back fond memories of her. She was a wondeful lady. Those little glasses were cute. We still have a couple of them hanging around.

We used to eat this when I was a kid, also. My Father called it the same thing as your Grandma did. I'm not much of a cook, but Stouffer's sells creamed chipped beef in the freezer section with the entrees. I found it by accident and tried it not to long ago. It was really quite good, and a nice change from the usual.

My parents and grandparents called it referred to this the same way. They ate it all the time when I was young but I was always afraid to try it. By the way, what is the cream sauce made with and what does it taste like?
