A good idea occurs to you at the wrong time. What will you do?

Let's say that you're nearly asleep and suddenly get a great idea for a story, article, or book. Do you trust yourself to remember that idea the next morning or do you quickly record it on a handy notepad? Or maybe you're enjoying a walk, bike ride, or picnic, and an idea occurs to you. Do you trust yourself to remember it later on or do you find a way to record it for future reference?

I agree with unusualsuspect, if I don't write it down it's lost forever. I keep a notebook beside the bed and one in my purse. I've jotted notes on everything I could find and if I couldn't get to a paper and pen soon, I tend to repeat it in my head until I find something. I'm sure there have been times when I've been nearly asleep, had something pop into my mind and promptly forgotten it the following morning because I didn't write it down. On the other hand, I've gone back to notes jotted down later and thought "What the heck was I thinking?"

I try to keep pens and paper handy when I am in creative moods so I can write down everything as soon as possible. I also record some things on my mobile phone if I have no paper handy. I just have to remember not to delet the saved messages until I have recorded my work elsewhere!

It doesn't matter how I try to hang on to it, if I don't write down an idea, it's gone. I keep a small notebook in my purse, so I can jot down ideas where ever I am. If I'm in bed, and the idea is good enough, I'll get up a write down enough so that I can still make sense of it in the morning.

I'd keep a notebook with you at ALL times and jot it down. It wont come again trust me. I have poems start in my head and I have to write it then. I have not written it down and the poem later on when I finally did, it sounded nothing as good as it did at first in my head. NOT a good idea. WRITE IT DOWN!

Moleskin or moleskin ripoffs are great little notebooks for carrying around with you. They're truly pocket sized. I try to keep one in my purse, and I keep notebooks by the bed for those late night thoughts. Now if i can just find a way to write stuff down in the shower. Lol. If i don't write it down I will forget.

i believe that whenever good idea comes to the mind one should note it down immediately. but dont try to start working on it immediately. relax for 24 hours and then again think about it. if its good it will still appeal you otherwise you will understand that its not worth working on.

I do trust myself to remember, but I still write it down! lol. I really depends on how big the idea is, I love coming up with new story ideas so I write them in a journal and type them up on my computer. But somtimes I'll just write down little notes or a sentence to help me remember at a better time.
