Reluctance to add interests |
|
Right now I'm thinking about adding Wicca to my interests, just because I respond to tons of discussions under that interest. But I hesitate a little, because I'm not Wiccan, and I don't want to misrepresent myself. On the other hand, I have many religious books under "books I have read" and only one of them is really from my own religion. So maybe I should just add it and stop being silly? Do you ever find yourself reluctant to add something to your interests even though you've responded to multiple discussions there? Are you add interests often? Do you even think carefully about which interests you add, or just click "yes" so it'll stop popping up after discussions? What is the longest you have held out on adding an interest before giving in?

1. easy888 (4323) | 1 year ago | Hello.lecanis,I had not added any interests for a long time already. I found out that the topics I replied often are related to life, relationship and mylot topic,i also have other interests but I had not replied or started a discussion about it,that is why I had not added any interests for long time.I did not want my interest list to be so long.

lecanis (7207) | 1 year ago | My interest list is already really long, because it often includes the same thing under multiple phrasings. For instance, I have parenting, have kids, children, etc. It does get a little annoying to have too many interests, but I usually just add things after responding to discussions there a few times. Thanks so much for sharing!

2. DeaXyza (332) | 1 year ago | Lecanis were you reading minds when you posted this? Well I do hesitate, so I do not add some of the intrests, I often think well how many discussions have I answered in the particular topic, in percentage? If I feel it adds upto atleast 2 questions or more from a certain topic everyday then it makes sense for me to add it to my intrests otherwise I find it not such a great idea to add intrests without the weightage. I answer about an average of 9 questions each day so for me a intrest should be really worth my time to be added. Thanks for asking dear and hope all's well at your end.

lecanis (7207) | 1 year ago | Hehe, I'm a mind-reader all right.=p No, really, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who really thinks about this! I try not to add things unless I really am very interested in them, even if I occasionally respond in that category because my friends start discussions there or whatever. I like that measure you use. I'll really have to think on this one. I'm pretty sure on most days I answer several discussions under Wicca, especially since I've added several friends who post there. So maybe I will wind up adding it after there. All's going well here. I'm still waiting to find out exactly what my new treatments are going to be, but the doctor upped the dosage of one of my medicines, and I've been breathing better already. I was sick last Monday, but I made it to work the rest of the week, and I'm off today because it's on the schedule, not because I'm sick. Thanks for your concern! How are you?

3. buldwgz (884) | 1 year ago | If it is something you respond to often, and are interested in, you should add it. I seem to have so many interests now that I rarely am asked to add any, though I do get the occasional screen asking me to add an interest. I do add a new one sometimes, just depends on my mood that day I guess.

lecanis (7207) | 1 year ago | *nods* I think I'm thinking too much on this one. I just have to explain to people about 10 times a day offline the difference between my religion and Wicca, so I'm getting a little paranoid about being called Wiccan. But really adding it as an interest on mylot doesn't mean anything, so I should just stop whining and do it.=p I think it's funny that you think you have a lot, and on your profile it says 20-something. I guess you must just pretty much stick to those categories in responding, if you don't get asked very often. My profile says I have 180-something interests already, though some of those are repeats just phrased differently.

4. cremechese (4503) | 1 year ago | I have by passed adding "religion" as a hobby I enjoy so many times it makes my head spin. I must answer a lot of questions about spirituality in general, since I don't really have a chosen religion. And I'm not anti-religion. I'm just reluctant to describe religion as a hobby I enjoy. I don't know. Maybe we're taking it too seriously, but I know what you mean.

lecanis (7207) | 1 year ago | I had a really hard time adding religion too, simply because it is listed as "a hobby I enjoy".=p I'm glad I'm not the only one who puts this much thought into these things. I'm often picked on for being overly serious! It is interesting that you talk a lot about spirituality in general but don't have a chosen religion. I do have one, but I often reply to discussions about other religions as well as my own. In fact, most of the discussions I reply to about my own religion are just people saying "What does that mean anyway" in which case I always try to help them out.

5. lordwarwizard (9583) | 1 year ago | Don't think too hard on it. I don't think anyone would bother to look at your interests (or mine or whoever's for that matter). Interests only serve 2 purposes. One, if you use that "discussions from my interests" link, then ok, you may find it useful. I never use that link myself. Two, the ads at myLot are usually targeted at your interests. That's all. So don't be afraid about misrepresenting yourself. No one is likely to know. If anyone cares enough or is bothered enough, she will pm you and you can always explain then.

lecanis (7207) | 1 year ago | Thanks for your reply, lordwarwizard. You're very helpful! You have a point that it's very unlikely anyone is going to actually read my interests. Especially since I have close to 200 of them already. I must just think I'm so special someone would notice. Thanks for bringing me back to earth.

6. Denmarkguy (1425) | 1 year ago | My interest list is probably pretty long, too-- although it has been a long time since I have checked. I tend to "resist the pop-up window" fairly thoroughly-- for example, I seem to read lots of discussions that were posted in "parenting," but I am NOT a parent, so I haven't really felt like adding it. Similarly, I answer lots of discussions about relationships... but I haven't added "marriage" as an interest, because I am really NOT interested in getting married. What you bring up here makes me pause and think about how we USE the "interests" area on myLot. Is it to create a profile about ourselves, or is it to filter the kind of discussions we want to be exposed to? Or that we can post in? Like you, I have typically concerned myself about misrepresentation... but then I wonder how many people ever LOOK at the "interests" area of someone's profile.

|
|
lecanis (7207) | 1 year ago | See, when I first joined I did think the point was to create a profile about ourselves. But as time has gone on, it's starting to look less and less like that's how it's used. I know I look at other people's interest sections, but if there are a lot of them, I'm probably not actually going to check them all. I don't resist that pop-up window so well myself, I guess. I've often added things that were really just another way of saying the same thing. However, so far I don't think I've really added things that could misrepresent me. I am really glad to hear that others think about these things too!

7. jwfarrimond (1241) | 1 year ago | If you've responded to lots of discussions of the subject, then I don't see why you should not add it as an interest. You are obviously interested in the subject or you would not have responded to the discussions.

lecanis (7207) | 1 year ago | Thanks! This is a lovely response!=) I guess for me it's not so much that I like discussing Wiccan things is that many things that are posted under "Wicca" also apply to other forms of paganism. That, and many of my friends here are Wiccan, so I wind up following them there. Thanks for being so pragmatic about the whole thing. I needed that. I tend to overthink.

9. ItTakesAllSorts (2211) | 1 year ago | I've always seen my interests as something personal to me and an oppotunity to click onto them now and again to see what is being discussed. I have never looked at the interests other people have when I have responded to their discussion, as I realise other people will have different interests to me. I am not religious at all but I have some friends I respond to who are religious, but this does not put me off responding to them. Each to their own is how I feel. If I have an interest in something, whether I believe in it or not I will add it to my interests, as this is how I can learn new things. I think you should add whatever you want that interests you personally and from the discussions made you can then decide whether you want to keep it as an interest. I have been on some discussions that are about the Wicca faith, even though I am not into this, but it is very interesting and someting I can make a decision on. Personally I do not care what other people think of the interests I have as I like to have discussions with those who share the same interests as myself. Whatever we like, we will always be judged by someone and lifes to short to worry about it. They can stick to their own interests, while some of us like to live outside the box and explore all things about life. I think this is what I enjoy so much about mylot, I have had the oppotunity to discuss things with others I would not have come across in my daily life, so I decide what I want to go onto and add a a discussion, no matter what others feel. As long as I try to stay positive and not insult anyone personally, I will always make the decision on what to add as an interest. If you enjoy the Wicca discussions, then go for it!!! related resource: personal care

lecanis (7207) | 1 year ago | I like that you don't care what peoplpe think of the interests you have. I need to be more like that! I used to have a higher confidence level and not care what people thought, but lately it seems I've been worrying far to much about what people think of me. I need to kick this habit, fast! As for the Wicca thing, I suppose I hesitate because I've spent my whole life trying to explain to people what makes my religion different from Wicca. Which is silly, because it's not that I don't like Wiccans or don't want to be mistaken for a Wiccan, but just because I feel it's important to be accurate and honest about such matters. Anyway, thanks a lot for your response! I've had some really awesome ones so far, and it's really changed my perspective on this issue!

ItTakesAllSorts (2211) | 1 year ago | I know what you mean, but what you decide to do is down to you. Some people just cannot accept people who do not fit ito what they believe. I have a friend Bizziebod, she is great. She has her own ideas and is not attached to the Wicca religion, check her out, she is very geniune and can answer alot of your questions. I have read many of your discussions and for what you have been through, you need to shrug of those who bring you any negative feelings and you should just go with what feels comfortable with you. Take care!!

lecanis (7207) | 1 year ago | *nods* My religion is actually very similar to Wicca... I'm a Celtic Reconstructionist. The major difference between my religion and Wicca is that Wicca takes influences from many older religions, while mine is just from one area. I've been a member of a lot of "general pagan" groups that involved Wiccans as well as other pagans, so it's not a matter of not knowing about Wicca, just of not feeling comfortable with people thinking I'm something I'm not. You have a good point about my needing to shed negativity after all I've been through. I'm working on that one. I think for a long time I just kind of shoved everything in a corner and didn't deal with it, and now I'm working on things because I found out that didn't really help. Thanks so much for your kindness and concern, you've given me a lot of good responses and been very helpful.

10. susieq223 (1965) | 1 year ago | I think the operative word here is "interest". If you are interested in it, then click it. I don't think it makes much difference how many or how few interests you have listed. At least I can't tell that it does. I'm not even sure what the interest list is really all about. I do answer a lot of discussions in areas I have not marked as an interest. Some of the interests I have on my list I haven't responded to in a long time.

lecanis (7207) | 1 year ago | You know, I have some interests that I haven't responded to in a long time as well. Maybe I should clean up my list a little while I'm thinking about it, so that I can find the discussions I really do want to reply to better. Thanks!
