do you keep empty boxes?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 100/100. squaretile (2606)   ranked 87 out of 32,937 in life 5 years ago

I've just moved into a new home. so that means new appliances or stuff passed down from other folks, and housewarming gifts.

these include stuff like a toaster, electric jug, coffee press, pots, wok, TV, dvd player, iron, vacumn cleaner, etc.

question is, do you keep the boxes after you take these things out to use? I know some people do, cos when they pass their belongings to me, it's placed back in its original box! i figured that keeping it might be useful because
a) you can pack it back in when you move again, and it makes for easy moving. in its package it's protected and in a box shape.
b) you can refer to the box for more information on the product.

however, can you imagine if i kept every single box? where would i put it? they would all take far too much space. of course i could fold them up, but being lazy and busy i don't think i can foresee myself doing that.

so i throw some and keep some. what about you?

It depends.. I do keep some boxes though I still cannot figure out why.

We do not need the boxes really unless we foresee sending back the item for a refund. Saving the buses for moving house would be even more ridiculous since free boxes are now part of house moving packages.

We throw most of the boxes away but there will be weird moments when I would keep the boxes. They just take up precious space if you ask me, so once in a while, I still go through them to throw away lol.:P

well, when u move house, if you can pack the same item, esp if fragile, into its original box then no need for more wrapping cushioning etc.

just recall some of the boxes i keep are for ornaments.

Congrats on moving to a new home!

If the things are not displayed, I will keep them in their original packing. For things that have a place on top of the kitchen cabinet, I remove their boxes.

Unless there is alternative use for the boxes, I do not keep it. The box will be cut, folded and waiting to be donated. I give them to the recycling company which comes to my block for collection every fortnight.

thanks! yah, some that I'm not using yet, like sandwich maker are still in their box below. maybe I will swop that with the toaster that is out of its (kept behind) box, and then keep both boxes since i dunno when I'll 'retire' which!

for me it'll depend on the size of the appliance.
if the appliance is those big ones e.g. fridge or washing machine, i won't keep the box.
but if the appliance are small and quite portable, most prob i'll keep the box.
another point of consideration is the durability of the item.
if it's those that i expect to replace every year or two, e.g. mobile phones and such,
i'd most prob throw the box away coz unlikely to be need the box.
my home is quite cluttered by the boxes that we keep. :p

yah lah, fridge and washing machine usually goes with the folks who bring it! my storeroom not big enough even if the box is folded.

talking abt mobiles, i realised i kept my 3 yr old mobile phone box! after i found it, immediately threw away.

I do keep some. The heavy duty ones I can repack other items in. Some I just throw out. Most of the time, I will keep certain boxes until I am sure that the product works and then out to the curb it goes.

myLot reputation of 100/100. squaretile (2606)   ranked 87 out of 32,937 in life  5 years ago

yah i folded some big ones to keep for repacking. but other big ones that I thought would come in useful, I've decided to trash. simply too many!

It used to be that I did not keep any. But then I saw that it did come in handy sometimes. Also, if you sell things on Ebay or other places, it seems to help if you have the original box. But if you have a lot of small kitchen appliances, those boxes can add up fast and then I worry about them being a fire hazard. So now what I do is those appliances that I think I'm going to keep forever, or until they fall aprat, I get rid of those boxes. Appliances that I don't use very much, like a pasta maker, that I may sell, or give away to a friend, I will probably keep those boxes so I can store the item and keep it clean and neat.

I hope that you like your new house. I know what you mean about wondering whether or not to keep empty boxes. I suggest that you keep them in a place that you don't go to very often. In my house this would be my loft. Do you have a loft or attic you could use? As you say it would be good to fold them if you do this. If not then I suggest you think about throwing them away. I would, however, keep any information leaflets about each product in a safe place. I use my filing cabinet for this. Good luck.

myLot reputation of 100/100. squaretile (2606)   ranked 87 out of 32,937 in life  5 years ago

i don't have a loft unfortunately.. only a tiny storeroom. yup, have been keeping instructional leaflets in a file - when I'm feeling organised!

myLot reputation of 98/100. maximax8 (17644)   ranked 160 out of 32,937 in life  5 years ago

Yes. I guess that you will have to be very careful not to put too much in your small store room hey. I have a large cupboard in my lounge and it is great for keeping the cleaning stuff in. I didn't have anything like this in my previous house, just a tiny airing cupboard.

I keep a box only for a few weeks until I am certain that a product is working...then I toss it. I don't have room to be storing empty boxes! I suppose one could take one large box and put a bunch of smaller ones into it if they felt the need to save all the smaller ones for some reason. (a person who moves frequently for instance).

I don't keep any boxes at all. The only boxes I have are for my computer modem and for my digital camera and camcorder. I only kept them because I threw them up on a shelf in my closet. I have absolutely no room to be storing boxes, folded or not. I keep manuals for everything in a special drawer, but other than that, everything goes !! Congrats on your new home !!

Oh...I'm guilty. i do keep boxes because I have this habit of putting appliances back to their boxes after using them. But this is true for small appliances only..the big boxes i usually send them to the recyling center.
