Somebody wanna tell me what is wrong with this picture?  

Maybe it was 4 years at Lakeview Christian Academy, but I was taught that symbol they were all making with their hands is a "goat's head" symbol and a sign of the devil.

I was confused as well... lol.

After reading some of the other posts I think it has to do with the Texas Longhorns. I think it was sweet that they had the Longhorn band to play at her funeral.

Maybe so, but can you blame me for being a little freaked out after seeing that?

...it might help to know that I had not a clue about that same symbol being used in sporting events for support of the Texas Longhorns.

actually, I have taken a sign language courses and have a few friends that are deaf, that I grew up with.... the sign they are doing is "LOVE"

the goat of Mendez has their thumb in front of their ring finger and their middle finger.. to say "love" in sign language the thumb is out to the side.

many people doing the sign for love, do it wrong and I see a few that are doing it wrong. much like some people will put up a "star of David" for religious holidays and mess it up and put a pentagram.. many people don't pay attention to detail.

Well, I sign too, and have also taken courses.
"I love you" is formed with the signed letters "I" "L" and "Y"...this sign is formed with the thumb pointed outward.
No one's thumbs are pointed outward in that video.

The sign means 2 things, one is I love YOU, in sign language, the other is the sign for the Texas Longhorns football team, which paly out of her university. You just have a dirty mind, or no education!

Yes, they do know what that sign means. It means "Hook 'em Horns", and is a symbol of Longhorn Pride. It has no satanic connotations...not with this usage, anyway.

Well, call me superstitious or whatever, but I kind of have to wonder if burning pentagrams on the field would be as easily accepted and over looked.

Some of you so called christians are so small minded you think anything you don't personally do is a sin. And I don't have a minister, I'm Atheist, and its people with your attitude who made me that way.

Now you've confused me. The way you worded that, does that mean you're an athiest? or are agnosticism?

Athiesm means that there is no God or no Devil, that we have no souls and become simply decay in the ground, no moving on to another life or after life. My dad is agnostic, which to hear him tell it means that he'll believe in God when he sees proof.

I do judge satanism tho, and surely even an athiest can agree that satanism is friggin' wrong. Just because one doesn't believe in it doesn't mean it's a good thing to be doing or practicing.

perhaps if you actually learned about satanists, you wouldn't judge them so harshly.They basically follow the live for today theory, instead of the live for future, possible rewards theory. Wow, I guess Wesleyans are the the only Christian denomination that teaches that symbol is a goat head symbol used for practice in satanism.

Texas Longhorn symbol? That's a new one on me just today.
The Christian school I went to told us that symbol stood for a goat's head and was used in practicing satanism. Imagine my surprise to see all those prominent people and church officials raising their little goat's heads like they were at a Motley Crue concert instead of a funeral.

Looks like lots of people who are either Texans or know their sports are saying it is a symbol in support of the team, the Texas Longhorns. Being I am not a sports fan nor a Texan, the sight of that video actually made my blood run cold to see prominent religious figures and a whole room full of blue bloods acting as tho they are at a rock concert rather than a funeral.

Looks like i pissed off a lot of people today...oops.

It may very well be the symbol for long horns whatever, but within a church there should have been more realization of what this sign is used for. It is inappropriate. Simple as that.

Thank you for explaining this to me like a kind hearted individual, for I am neither a sports fan nor a Texan & with my religious back ground as a child, I was a bit too freaked out to even read anything on that page. I just wanted to shut the dang window and not look at it any more. Thinking it was a blatant slap in God's face, my first thought was to get other thoughts on this. The idea that any institution would take something known to be a symbol of satanic ritual on as their own thing never entered my mind until people began responding.

Apparently most the other readers accept the goat's head symbol as the symbol in support of Texas Longhorns. Apparently it was supposed to be a tribute to here alma mater, University of Texas.

...it still creeps me out seeing religious figures making that symbol, tho.

One would think that religious figureheads would know the difference. The common everyday teachers at Christian school knew the difference. I realize people are saying it's for the Longhorns, and I'm sure it is, but the symbol makes my stomach twist, and I'm not a highly religious person.

No there aren't any santanist at this funeral, this is about the inappropriate hand jesture. And you're right about a "happy" funeral, I was waiting for to see someone walking up and downs the aisle selling beer.

Lets get this straight! you are all Christians, yet you are appalled that some other bunch of christians weren't prostrate with grief because some kind old christian lady died and was on her way to heaven. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS! I thought you all believed that dieing was a good thing for people like that

no where did I mention that I was appalled by the happy funeral, I was just saying that I had never seen a happy funeral.. it was an observation.

When it's my time to die, I do hope that my funeral is a happy event and not one filled with tears.
when someone I love dies, I do cry, but I am in no way crying for them.. I am crying for selfish reasons.. I am crying because I will miss seeing them... I cry for me.

I know that feeling all too well.
I have yet to attend a happy funeral tho...my mil is still alive...sorry, that was in poor taste, but I do cry for myself most of the time. I cried for my friend when she ended her own life & I cried for the children she left behind even more than I cried for our still unrepaired friendship. For my fil, my bil, my grandmother & granny, as well as my stepdaughter, those tears were mostly for me and the pain I saw in my family members' faces.

I hope that people will celebrate my life, but not to the point where the video of the memorial looks like a cult ritual.

It still freaks me out.
