Do you think giving magazine subscriptions as Christmas gifts is a good idea?

My grandson is a 13 year old boy who is very hard to buy gifts for so I started giving him magazine subscriptions to PC Gaming and Sports magazines for Christmas. I also get my daughter subscriptions to two of her favorite magazines becauses she can't afford to spend money on things like that and they are so expensive to buy monthly. They both told me that every month when their magazines come they think of me...and that's a good thing...lol. It's like a gift that keeps on giving all year isn't it?
Have you ever given a magazine subscription as a gift? Is it something you have thought about and decided against? What are your reasons against it?

I think giving magazine subscriptions as a gift is a fantastic idea---magazines really are getting to darn expensive which is why I hardly buy any, anymore, and right now wouldn't have the funds to subscribe to all I'd like. Also, if it's a specialty item type magazine, that isn't sold on newsstands much, like Writer's Digest, or The Writer, all the better--nowadays one can make a subscription to just about any magazine known to mankind on-line...Sure wish someone would give me a magazine subscription... :(

Yes, I think this is a wonderful idea. Especially if it's something they are
interested in. I do this every year for a friend of mine and she said it is the best gift she has ever received. I do this for my daughters too. They like the parenting magazines and the books that come with them for the children. Thanks for reminding me it's about time to renew them.

There are magazines for just about anything you can think of including just something funny to read. I think the whole idea should be to get these kids reading something more than comic books and the Sunday comics.

I think it is a wonderful idea. The gift that keeps on giving. I got a subscription to Today's Parent as a baby shower gift from a family member and I just loved it. I always thought how thoughtful they were every time i got one in the mail. Great! Vicki

I think that's a wonderful baby shower gift and very thoughtful. I'm sure you got a lot of good advice from the magazine too.

Of course at one point they will get bored but eventually they will pick up the magazine to read another article and learn something new about whatever the magazine is about. The whole idea is to get kids who don't like to read to start liking to read....

My son asked for National Geographic I don't know how many years ago. I renew it every year now - he's 24. He loves it. My other son, nah, he would never read anything (well, maybe playboy...)

hahhah - I guess if my youngest (21) would READ the ARTICLES I'd CONSIDER sending him Playboy. He's in the Navy, station in Sasebo Japan... Not sure Playboy would be such a good idea in such a confined area... He'll have to make due with the Honey Buns I send him!

I think National Geographic is an awesome magazine but too expensive to buy on a monthly basis so I'm sure your son appreciates his subscription. As for the other....there's nothing wrong with Playboy..lol.....

i think it is an excellent idea to give a magazine subscription as a gift. I have very rarely done this, as subscriptions can be expensive.
I would be tempted to give my daughter a subscription to the Girlfriend magazine, as she loves it.
I believe National Geographic is an excellent magazine sub to give, if you can afford it.

That's the good thing...most magazines now have special kids editions that make it even easier for us to find something that will interest them.

I've given magazie subscriptions, mostly Reader's digest or Woodworkers Magazine. I have also decided against it. Mostly due to price. I wanted to send my friend Adirondack Life and our local newspaper. Take care

You know, there's something special when your young and you receive mail.....I think especially for kids because there not getting bills yet, haha. I really think they look forward to it and I believe it's a great idea.
My Grandson, when he was little, received "Ranger Rick" from me for years. My daughter said he was always watching out for it in the mail when it was the time for it to arrive.....he seemed to really enjoy it and getting something all his own and being delivered to him to boot.
He's now 22 and last year I got him "Consumer's Digest" magazine for the year.
My oldest daughter received "The Smithsonian" magazine from me for years and loved it.
I think it's one of the nicest gifts anyone can give, plus you receive it all year. How cool is that?

That's another good reason to send them to kids. Kids love getting mail and know that once a month the mailman will be bringing something just for them!

That's is great. Teens are hard to shop for.I haven't given a magazine subscriptions as gifts but my mom would give my dad a Playboy subscription every year. One year she did such a great job hiding it that she didn't give him his Playboy until Christmas night. She told me that he was sad because he thought she had forgotten it all together, he was please when she gave it to him later that night.

My husband is also a big believer in magazines for gifts, matter of fact he prefers that for himself even. He calls it the gift that gives all year. If you think about it, who wouldn't want to have a favorite magazine every month? It is a treat that most of us do not indulge in for ourselves, so it is a nice gift. This is a great discussion topic by the way :)

You are right about not indulging ourselves. My daughter is at a point in her life where she can no way afford to buy her favorite magazine but since I got her the subscription last year she gets it at her door every month and still thanks me every month...lol...

I think it's a wonderful idea. If it's something that the person is interested in then yes it's a great idea. I did that for my mom one year and got her the Reader's Digest and she was thrilled to have it but then she got a job and didn't have the time to read it so I stopped the subscription.

When my Dad was alive he had very poor eyesight even with glasses so I got him a subscription to the Readers Digest in large print and he loved it!
