Do you believe God is more apt to answer your prayer if you kneel or does it mat |
|
I have been told that we have to get on our knees and pray to God, but sometimes I am so tired, I get into bed first. When we go to church, we bow our heads but we still sit on the pews. Now some people notice a difference, they feel more reverence if they kneel down but I wonder whether it is the attitude or whether they expect that God will answer their prayers if they show their humility by kneeling, whereas to me, bowing my head is just as humble. And when you do kneel to pray, you are usually wearing your pajamas and nightgown, whereas some of us sleep in the altogether and we would not kneel to pray unless we were still wearing our day clothes, thus getting into bed as soon as possible. Now do you think that God is more apt to answer your prayer if you kneel or is simply bowing your head enough?

1. TravisE (275) | 10 months ago | I think your internal attitude is the key factor. God listens when you are sincere, and whatever posture you can take that gets you into a good attitude space of humility and sincerity is best. IMHO.;-)

tigertang (1485) | 6 months ago | I think it's always best to ask if you are praying in your heart or with your mouth and knees. You can kneel down and even crawl when you pray but if you are merely going through the motions, it really does not matter. People who are really praying will be talking to the Almighty from within no matter what the position of their body.

suspenseful (12757) | 6 months ago | That sounds like a good idea. I do not like kneeling, not because I do not like being reverent, but I want to go to sleep, and that sort of wakes me up. Besides I pray better in bed and I feel that God hears me better that way.

tigertang (1485) | 4 months ago | Well, as you have said, God hears you better when you pray in bed. So, if this is where you believe that you can get the closest relationship with God, this is where you should pray. At the end of the day, what is prayer but a private conversation with God. Where you do it and what position you place your body in does not really matter. I remember reading somewhere, where it said that Native Americans believed in praying standing up, because they wanted to look up to the divine. On the other hand, other religions kneel because they want to be subservient in the presence of the divine. Who is right, who is wrong? I don't know - but I think it all depends on the individual. Ultimately, the prayer should be in the heart.

2. Rozie37 (6392) | 10 months ago | Because of injuries, I have not been able to kneel down and pray for many years. I use to also lay prostrate on the floor, but now I do it on my bad. I believe that if you can, you should, out of respect to God. However, I do not know that he will not answer our prayers if we are not in these positions. I believe that it is more important that we pray, than the poisition we are in when we do. The word of God says to pray without ceasing. I am the type of person that I do not like to put praying off for later. I like to pray right where I am at the time. I may forget later on. I will be walking down the street, in the shower, or typing on Mylot. Where ever I feel the need to stop and pray, that is what I do.

suspenseful (12757) | 10 months ago | I pray during the day after the morning prayer, not counting graces. I find that when I pray at night, I doze off, then I continue praying. I have even prayed in my dreams. Sometimes I will stop what I am doing, or I will keep on doing what I am and think about God or ask HIM for HIS help.

Modestah (7428) | 10 months ago | my father had crushed his knee and had the pieces removed - they filled hte spot up with muscle they removed from his thigh. from that accident till his death that knee caused him grief - but he never did stop kneeling in church. I so admire his fortitude as I have no valid excuse and find it difficult to kneel the duration. I wonder if he placed all his weight on his good knee - still a task. he would say the Good Lord hung on the cross, patiently, 3 long hours for me - the least I can do is offer my discomfort to Him for this short time.

suspenseful (12757) | 10 months ago | We do not need to show our piety by kneeling. I can make longer prayers in bed, rather than on my knees, and more effective prayers. I doubt that God wants us to reach HIM by our much speaking and how long we can sit through the pain if we have something wrong with them and HE is not interested in us SHOWING how much we can endure. Christ suffered on the cross to remove the curse of our sins. It was not so that we should now suffer if we have arthritis in our knees or something like that. We can bow and pray, we can kneel in bed, we can show by our humbleness. I do not believe we should look up into the sky or face forward, as that is not showing reverence.

3. JJ4Ever (703) | 10 months ago | Hi, Suspense. This is a great question and discussion. To tell you the truth, God doesn't expect us to kneel or bow our heads when we pray. Those specific things that we do when we pray are simply our postures of prayer. God doesn't require or expect them. However, you're exactly right when you say that you're approaching God with a humble attitude when you bow your head or kneel. It's basically just something to help you realize the awesomeness of God. Kneeling and bowing of the head is just an action. It has nothing to do with what's in your heart and how you pray to God. You will still pray the same. You say you're tired by the end of the day, but you still like to pray before you go to bed. I do this also because I like to close out my day in the right way. I usually get in bed also and pray myself to sleep. It may sound strange, but God still honors my prayers. You can pray while your drive (with eyes open, of course!), while you work, or whatever you're doing and He will still honor your prayers. It doesn't matter what posture you use when you talk to God. Sometimes when I have something weighing very heavy on my mind that I want God to have complete control over, I'll get in my room by myself and kneel at my bed to pray for it just because it's something extremely important and special to me. When I do that, I'm just demonstrating a humble spirit and that I'm worshipping God, not looking at myself. Sometimes kneeling to pray can really help your mindset. It's not require while you pray, but as I sometimes kneel while I pray, it can really help you remember those special times spent with just you and God. Bowing your head when praying shows humility, respect, and sincerety. Closing your eyes when you pray keeps from distraction. They're all wonderful things, but they mean nothing when you're speaking to God. He is more concerned with what you're praying for then how you're praying. I hope that helps! Once again, great discussion. Keep up the great work!

suspenseful (12757) | 10 months ago | Thank you for your answer. I have been told that you have to kneel all the time, but sometimes I am too tired. I think part of the problem has to be that when I was boarding and I was kneeling to pray, the lady I was boarding with always interrupted me (she was in the kitchen and I had to go to bed early because I had to get the bus early to get to work) when I was praying and so I am wary that someone will interrupt me. So even though I look on God with reverence and awe, I still have that anxiety.

Residual (619) | 5 months ago | This is so true but remember that prayer is our way of getting a closer relationship with God and we must follow the example set for us by Jesus Man has a tendency to try and change the words that God has given us to suit there needs Study your word and you will be given. God tells us in scripture how to come to him and his word is good enough for me.

JJ4Ever (703) | 5 months ago | Thank you both for your comments. I don't believe God expects us to kneel each time we pray, but you're right that He does give us a wonderful example of how to pray in Scripture along with a model prayer. Kneeling is a symbol of our awe and reverence to God when we pray. If we have the same reverence when we pray, for instance lying in bed at night praying, which I do often before falling asleep, I believe God still hears and answers us. Yes, it's a wonderful thing to be able to kneel, but I really feel that all God wants is our respect as we pray; He wants us to know that we're in His presence. We should be humble and in awe, but He understands that we can't always kneel when we pray, for sometimes obvious reasons. It's better to pray lying in bed than to be interrupted while kneeling to pray, in my opinion. I really appreciate both of your input, though! Thanks for posting this wonderful discussion and for your kind comments.

| 4. johnrp (64) | 10 months ago | I don't think the posture of the person praying would matter to God, but kneeling might help the individual to concentrate more on the prayer and to feel more reverential. It is like saying to oneself, "This is a special part of my day when I am doing something special and assuming a posture I don't normally assume for other things."

suspenseful (12757) | 10 months ago | When I am praying, I am not concentrating on other things, but if I am kneeling, I am afraid that someone will interrupt me. No one will interrupt me if I am in bed and I have my covers over me nor do they do if they see that I bow my head and am sitting in the chair.

6. blackbriar (5099) | 10 months ago | A simple bow of your head with hands folded in front of you in prayer is fine with the Lord above. HE is not THAT particular when it comes to prayer. If he was, then ppl with bad knees and can barely walk or anyone who simply can no longer kneel would never have their prayers answered.

8. lotterylover (2898) | 10 months ago | All times are needed but we should kneel every time we are able as it helps to keep us focused on what we are saying and who we should be praying for. I know at church there are a lot of old people who have a hard time kneeling but the church as a whole are encouraged to kneel. Some prayers are while we stand and I think the one for the offering we stay seated. If I pray sitting in my chair or in bed I am more likely to forget what I am doing or go to sleep.

suspenseful (12757) | 10 months ago | I find it hard to kneel as I am always worried that someone will interrupt me. I have had that happened to me. If I am in bed, and bending down with the covers over me, the idea is that they will think I am sleeping and will not ask me silly questions. In our church we bow our heads and we do not stand to pray, only if it is a blessing.

10. ElicBxn (8225) | 10 months ago | I think you can pray humbly striding down the street, if you have the right mind set. I'd suppose you could even do it jogging, but since I've never been a jogger I don't know for sure. I think its the sincerity of the prayer and the humility of the heart - not the physical attitude - that matters. I know I've had prayers answered doing all kinds of things that don't involve kneeling, or even bowing my head.
