Help Me Shop

Canada

Ok help me out here folks. I have always had a cordless phone as well as a corded one. The first cordless I ever bought was a Panasonic and that thing was cheap and it lasted about 15 years. I then bought another about two or three years ago (Not cheap) and it's done like last nights dinner. So does that tell me they aren't made so well and it's time to change brands or what? The main choices here in Canada are G.E., Panasonic, Uniden, Vtech and Sanyo. Please tell me what you think. Thank You in advance.

I think they all are good brands. I would go with the cheaper one, that way when it goes kapooey, just throw it away and buy a new one. We live in a throw away society, they don't make things to last anymore. They want it to go kapooey so we have to buy new. I trie to buy a new battery for my phone, it was cheaper to just buy a new phone, you got everything with it. Here in the States you can get a decent phone for $15 to 20. Name brand too.

Definately if I lived where i could get a cordless for 20.00 I would cheap out and throw the thing away no questions asked. But here in Canada at least where i shop I found the GE to be the cheapest and it was 129.00.

I would suggest A Uniden cordless phone. I have a Uniden police scanner and I've had it a long time. It still works great.

I have a Radio Shack scanner and it's awesome but we no longer have Radio shack here in Canada. It's gone Source and I'm not at all impressed. I bought both my Radio Shack scanners brand new from the US on Ebay. Tomorrow (Monday) I am going to the city and I plan to look at a Uniden cordless phone. Several of myLot friends have made this suggestion and I sure appreciate your commebts, Thanks.

I have had very good luck with uniden....and they last. So I have not ventured into buying any other kind.....they might be as good but Uniden has been good for me.

I have had wonderful success with the GE 2.4 GHz cordless. I left it behind when I moved across country and bought another. They last for years--the one in AZ was about 5 years old and I never had any problems. It cost me less than $15 back then and I spent $20 on my newest one. It has an answering machine built in if you want to use it. If you're interested in it, I got it at Walmart and on the bottom of the base it says Thompson Inc. 27851GE1-B. I highly recommend it! (I tried a more expensive one and it was always running out of juice or malfunctioning)

You will be shocked to know for a GE here in Canada the best price is actually wallmart but the phone here costs 129.00. There is absolutely no phone here for the money you can get it for there.

At the guitar forum I've hung out at for ten years, we have members all over the world and often buy things in the states that our friends can't get in their countries, then we ship it to them. Of course, we reimburse each other. Can't you do something like that? I'm sure there are people you know well on this forum that you'd trust to do it.

I agree that things arent made like they use to be made....use to you could buy something and it would last you for years and years and now when you buy stuff you will be lucky if it last you the whole amount of a few months...and thats if you are just really lucky...I think thats how they make so much money is because they dont put much money into making the stuff and they still get paid the same amount for the product...and Iwould have to go with GE because I think that I have heard somewhere that htat is a better brand!

Thank You for your response. I know everyone will probably have different ideas and that's good because I'm interested in hearing different views. Again Thanks.

Those are good brands. I have a corded phone but not any of those brands. Our phone company provide us with the phone. I think 15 years on Panasonic is worth it. Some technologies are not made perfect at all even branded ones goes bad in a few years but the good thing about the branded ones is you get warranty for it. Here if we buy panasonic we get a lifetime guarantee. Don't you have that? Also with v-tech.

A one year guarantee is all I have ever seen. I have never heard of a lifetime guarantee on anything I have ever bought so far. Thank You for your remarks. I am finding this all so interesting. I have never in my whole life heard of brand name cordless phones selling so cheap as the U.S. has. Unreal. Thank You

you are so right, phones are not made as well as they use to be,they just don't last as long...All the names you said or pretty good..Panasonic is a good one,and i would think Sanyo would be good.I have not had good luck with Atech,i am not saying they are bad, i am just saying that I have not had good luck with them..I really like the Uniden Phones,i have had really good luch with them..I don't want to steer you wrong and you end up getting a dud, but i have had good luck with the Uniden, and mine lasted for years,so thats all i can tell you..Stay away form Phillips and Bellsouth, they are sorry phones.I hope thos helps...

I have never seen a Phillips or Bellsouth here in Canada, but I did look at a Uniden, boy they're expensive. 149.00. Mind you that gave you the base and three hand helds.

I'm not going to recommend a brand name to you since we just bought a cordless phone a few weeks ago. One thing a neighbor of mine used to do is buy her phone at Best Buy. I know you have some in Canada, hopefully near you. You pay an additional small fee for the warranty and you get to replace the phone free for a year. She used to replace hers every year this way. Worked out quite well for her...Whit

Oh so is it because you don't like your new phone ? Or rather just prefer to not say ? I'm really not sure where Best Buy is but I do know there isn't one around here that I'm aware of. Thanks for letting me know.

The phone is a GE with a built in answering machine I got at Walmart for under $30. It seems to be working fine. I can't believe the difference in price. Have you done a discussion to compared prices between Canada and US? Whit

That is too bad. The only time I have had trouble so far with a cordless phone was when I didn't buy a Uniden. I haven't been able to break my DCT-646-T yet but I've only had it 2 years. I've never b roken a Uniden yet, but I do buy new ones periodically because of the newer features.

Yes, we have a pair of the the Uniden radios, too, the kind with a range of a few miles that you don't need a license to operate. I have an amateur radio license, the hubby doesn't so I got them so we could stay in touch when we weren't in sight of each of hiking and stuff, as he doesn't like to walk as far as I do. I love the Uniden wireless phones, though. They are not as rugged as the radios but the features are better and I think they hold up well. I guess it is always possible to get a lemon, though, with any brand.

I have a GE cordless with the added feature of "speaker" phone which is wonderful for hands-free talking. I can crochet and talk at the same time. I've had this phone for a couple years. It still works just fine. It also has a feature of programming numbers, although I haven't used it yet.

This I do find interesting because I know of several people tell me GE cordless phones are garbage and here yours has been going for two years. Interesting, very interesting.
