The 48 hour period is over, and responses are no longer being accepted! New responses will not be answered, so please read the multiple answers I've already given here. Thanks!

I think it's time we have a revealing question and answer session with the members of myLot. Sound like fun? I think so!

My username is Crash, and you can learn a little more about me by visiting my profile. My official position at myLot shall remain a mystery for now, but let's just say I know enough to answer pretty much any question you throw my way. If I don't know the answer, then I'll do my best to bug the right people at myLot to get it answered, or I'll make something up:)

So here's what I want to do. I will respond to any question posted in this discussion (subject to a few ground rules) in the next 48 hours. It might take me a little while to get through them all, but as long as the question is posted within 48 hours, I will answer it.

Here are the ground rules...

1) Only one question per myLot member, so make it a good one!
2) Don't post the same question that has already been asked by someone else.
3) Feel free to comment under someone else's question, but follow-up questions are not allowed in the comments
4) Keep it clean and respectful! I carry around a big delete button in my pocket, and I will definitely use it on any response or comment that I feel doesn't contribute posititvely to our discussion (of course, I also know how to use the plus/minus buttons in the discussion rating system). Keep in mind that the less times I have to delete something, the more likely I am to engage in similar discussions in the future!
5) I'll throw an extra $20 into the Paypal account of whoever gets my best response. The best response will go to the most original, thought-provoking question about myLot.
6) Let's have fun!

So let me get this started by asking the first question...

What would YOU like to know about myLot???

Thank you for allowing us to have an inside look into Mylot.

My Question: In recent years, there have been many websites that seem to be the offsprings of the giant myspace.com (Yuwie.com and mylot.com seem to be the biggest) . While each website offers something a little different, My question is, how is MyLot really that much different then any of these other social networks that keep popping up all over the net, and besides a little payment incentive, how will MyLot keep more visitors comming back daily to this social network?

Crash (7)   ranked 1,300 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

Great question!

We have a lot of features that you can't find anywhere else, but the heart and soul of this social network is our discussion area, coupled with interests.

Look at the URL in your address bar. Notice the number 1402356? That's the number of discussions that have been created in myLot since we began. One million, four hundred two thousand, three hundred and fifty six!!!

We're different than other social networks because we haven't just "popped up". We've been around for awhile now. Long enough to produce 1,402,356 discussions. We've also successfully implemented an earnings program that has successfully paid thousands of myLot members on time for 18 straight months and counting.

Have you ever been in the discussion area of some of these other social networks, including the big guys like MySpace and Facebook? They're a mess! Sure there are some meaningful discussions in there, but you have to wade through a ton of garbage to find them. No one does "interests" like we do either. Interests and discussions go hand-in-hand.

But we don't try to compete directly with these other social networks. We feel we are unique enough that we can co-exist nicely with everyone else.

My wife is a member here and neither one of us had been involved in a site like this before Mylot. Neither one of us is interested in participating in Yewie, Facebook or Myspace even though we checked them out.

You are right you do have something unique here and I hope you keep up the great work. We are loyal members and hope to do our part to bring more members here.

Hi Crash,
First of all let me congratulate mylot because they are keeping their promise about intoducing new fetures like Mylot Digest and now this one from you is making mylot members interesting to be here.
My first question to you:
You have mentioned that you will respond to any discussion preferably with in 48 hours. What I want to know is whether your reply for the discussions we put in mylot under any category of interests and incase we want to put a question directly to you where should we post the discussion?

Crash (7)   ranked 1,300 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

Thanks for the kind words.

This is a tough question, and I don't know the best answer at this point. I know we need to do a better job of being available to our users, but at the same time, I'd never get anything else done if I constantly monitored myLot for questions that popped up. (myLot is huge, in case you haven't noticed!)

I'd like to see how this discussion turns out, and then go from there.

Hi Crash. Nice to meet you. Awesome avatar btw. My question is this: when a member's account is suspended, or if things go far enough to ban said member, why isn't some kind of notification sent to explain the reason for the action to the member? That has never happened to me thankfully, but I've seen it happen to many people, and their first and foremost complaint is that they don't know why or what for. I hope you can enlighten me on this one. Thanks in advance.....Carryl

Crash (7)   ranked 1,300 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

Banned members should have a pretty good idea why they were banned.

We would rather spend our energy improving myLot for the thousands of quality members we have than keep running dialogue with the small minority who repeatedly violate community guidelines.

I have seen discussions deleted that I haven't seen anything wrong with, yet I have seen many, many more discussions that are allowed to stay despite the fact that they are clear violations of the guidelines. I have also seen pages and pages of these discussions that remain on the site, and the members who I assume are banned because they haven't been here for months, remain at the top of the member rating lists because of their many pages of plagiarized discussions. I would like to know why these discussions are not removed, and why these members who were banned for abusing the system don't lose their top member ratings?

Crash (7)   ranked 1,300 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

I'm sure there are some discussions out there that violate guidelines. We try to stay out of discusssions unless abuse has been reported. It's as simple as that. If there's no abuse reported, there's a good chance it will stay.

Whoesale blanket deletion of banned user discussions is only used as a last resort.

Unless one of 'freinds' or other comembers of myLot report, us than the discussion in question is left alone.
Or to put it another way, someone has to report the perceved violation for it to come to the attention of the moderators, most often. Susan

Greetings Crash! I first found myLot when I was looking for the answer to a computer question and luckily stumbled in and had some members who were able to assist me with this. Since then I have seen all the changes and improvements and have thoroughly enjoyed myself while at the same time been frustrated when looking for particular answers.

The search function works well and tags are an important part of it but has myLot considered using a keyword search from within topics and providing an index? I know we used to have highlighted words whenever we wrote topics, back in 2006 but I think that was more for revenue generation than indexing. Yes I am a long time member who requested cancel of my previous account so I could start fresh. Keep up the good work, we enjoy this site tremendously!

Crash (7)   ranked 1,300 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

Have you tried the "full text" function? I know it's kind of buried.

Run a search, then click on discussions, then click the "full text" radio button.

That will do a full-text search of discussions, beyond a normal tag search. I don't think it currently searches comments and responses.

Hi Crash. First let me say I love your avatar. I am a collector and lover of all things swine related.

My question about myLot relates to the usage of certain words and parts of discussions that get deleted because they are considered too mature or distasteful. In my humble opinion, the system is indiscriminately eliminating perfectly tasteful and acceptable discussion based solely on the appearance of words that sometimes, but not always, are considered by some to be offensive.

My solution is, if you don't like the content of medical or political discussions or any other discussions for that matter, simply stay away from them. Apparently myLot doesn't think it's users are capable of making that choice, and THAT offends my sensibilities as a writer who abhors censorship.

For a while, I don't know if it's still true of not, we couldn't use the nick name for Richard that rhymes with nick and begins with D. Even if it was legitimately someone's name, the discussion would get deleted. There ought to be a way for that to be differentiated. Recently I had a part of my discussion on mammary gland cancer deleted because someone mentioned cancer in male parts. Come on, doesn't anyone read this stuff or is it just a bot that goes through and deletes discussions and sections solely based on the appearance of certain words.

I do notice that some discussions get tagged with "mature content". I think that is a good way to make a distinction.

It is unfortunate that there are families out there who let their youngsters indiscriminately surf the web and then the parents blame the media for containing mature matter. It has always been my policy to discuss even when my children were much younger, rather than the delete or censor. I think censorship is a cowardly way out of things. If youngsters encounter "mature" or "questionable" material, whether it be on books, online, movies, radio, or any other media. That of course is just my opinion, but I have two teenage boys who are mature and make good choices in life, so I must be doing something right. I never outrightly forbade them to read, listen to, or view anything, online or on television or in books. They are just naturally turned off by skin magazines and flicks and even off color jokes, and I do take some of the credit for them learning those kinds of choices.

MyLot should give credit to people for being able to select what is and is not in their interests for reading and writing. Of course outright vulgar language needs to be limited, but as I stated before, people who are reading on this website appear to be intelligent enough, on the average, to distinguish between a Richard's nick name and a slang name for a body part, as well as distinguishing between distasteful language about human parts and functions and intelligent discussions about medical or biological issues. Maybe myLot needs to have some human "censors" and proofreaders to make the site more fair to everyone.

I have to say, after all my raving, that I do think myLot is an awesome and unique site. Thanks for the opportunity to vent and ask questions.

Crash (7)   ranked 1,300 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

Yeah, I'm sure that can get frustrating. It's definitely easier and more efficient to simply filter it all out than to try to distinguish between proper and improper uses of certain words. We're definitely not trying to censor anything. But sometimes you have to get rid of a couple bad apples in order to ensure the really rotten ones don't make it through.

myLot reputation of 90/100. kbkbooks (2237)   ranked 622 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

I realize it's easier to mass filter than to go through each discussion. It's just not fair to those who really don't mean to write in something unacceptable but then end up using some word that can be construed two or three ways, therefore getting knocked off by some automatic filter. MyLot is personalized enough and seems to pass through enough money that they should be able to afford some people to read and filter manually.

myLot reputation of 98/100. sacmom (5869)   ranked 322 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

A spell checker is not really needed on mylot. If you use Internet Explorer 6.0+ you can download a free Google toolbar that has a built in spell check.

http://toolbar.google.com/T4/index_pack.html

Hope this helps.

myLot reputation of 99/100. ElicBxn (15429)   ranked 68 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

WHY should I have to use a different program than the one I'm using. I've already got 4 or 5 programs open on my desk top. There should be a spell check in the system.

BESIDES, when I use firefox at a different location, it doesn't give me a spell fuction when I open mylot.

If I want to spell check it, I have to write it in a different program & copy it to mylot. I can do that now, why not provide a spell check fuction in the system, especially when they don't allow anyone with less than 500 posts to copy paste. (Not that I'm objecting to THAT.)

Crash (7)   ranked 1,300 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

This is a possibility, but definitely not a certainty.

myLot reputation of 98/100. sacmom (5869)   ranked 322 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

Well with the Google toolbar's spell checker one can type directly in the MyLot box, whether or not they are allowed to copy and paste, without having to open up a big bunch of programs.

myLot reputation of 96/100. ebsharer (2474)   ranked 390 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

Yes spell check would be very nice. It would help the people that can't spell and the people that can't type. Thanks for asking the question.

You're right, sacmom, I know because that's what I use. ANY place I type while using my explorer browser I am able to spell check if I want to.

myLot reputation of 100/100. terri0824 (3510)   ranked 12 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

Spell check would solve this problem, but it wouldn't for those that spell the word correctly but use the wrong word! There are two words that come to mind that two different people use wrong on a consistent basis. One being half for have and sight for site. I even started a discussion regarding this, hoping that they would catch the drift, but didn't. Oh well!

Hi Crash! This is an awesome idea.
I would love to know how long will the system keep our discussions. I mean, if I stay here for ten years, will it keep all my discussions from day one or will they slowly be removed from my list of discussions I have started? Additionally, why can't I delete my own discussions that have no responses?

Okay are you ready for an earful? LOL
First of all I've been here nearly a whole year and love being here. I've met some terrific people here, have friends and feel a tight bond with many members as I'm sure many others do.

Through discussions many of us get to know each other very well...we share parts of our lives with each other, whether to share our joys, triumphs, fears, to ask for fellow MyLotters prayer help. As it should be in a community of friends like this. When we do share pieces of our lives we find out that whatever we may be going through in life, that we're not alone.

So many times people might think that they are going through a problem or crises in their lives and think they are alone with this. When a MyLotter opens their heart about some such episode they discover that they aren't alone and that is the wonderful blessing about such a community like MyLot where we can interact with one another and give each other that boost and words of comfort one might need.

Here at Mylot we can also share news items we think might interest others, helpful information, and get viewpoints on even the most controversial subjects, that often can "heat" up

Okay, I'm very well aware of the guidelines here, and what one can or can't start as a discussion. It's disheartening however that many times just because one(or more) MyLotter doesn't agree with what is being said in a discussion, whether it'd be the topic discussion itself, by the poster, or by some comment response left by another MyLotter.

That's when "strange" things happen here and sometimes unfairly. I realize the subject of both banning and deletions of discussions have already been touched on here. My question is, is this. I can't understand the principles of when a MyLotter is banned from here. There are many MyLotters who may well deserve to be banned for making continuous obnoxious, flaming, insulting remarks and attacks against another MyLotter...but many times this is just one (or two) MyLotters who have a personal vendetta type thing going an not necessarily a reflection of the person who may be banned him or herself.

So yes, I would like the principles perhaps of why a person is banned especially if they are innocent and just being personally under attack. From what I understand, as this did happen to a friend of mine about a month ago--though she was latter re-instated, she,the person who was banned had no opportunity to tell "her" side of the story of what happened...that she was being maliciously attacked by a vindictive MyLotter who accused her with all sorts of lies, yet the word of the person who filed complaints against her were listened to and not questioned. Is this fair?

Is there a better way the Administration and/or Moderators can investigate into the real and true story of what is going on between members, rather than just take one person's word, the word of the person reporting the other?

Also, sort of on the same principle of a banning of a person are the deletions of discussions as this really is almost the same issue as both banning a member and deletion of discussions are "deletions"...one a member, the other discussions. How does MyLot determine the deletion of discussions? I've seen so many discussions that in my opinion should be deleted and have even recently reported one that I thought was in poor taste and an insult to animal lovers, yet it remains here, while seeing good quality discussions deleted even though they followed the guidelines.

Sorry this is long-winded...just curious about the principles of MyLot's policies of banning of MyLotters and deletions of discussions especially when they are unjustified in both cases.

myLot reputation of 99/100. reinydawn (4236)   ranked 192 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

I just had a great idea about your main question here... Maybe myLot can do like they do in e-bay. When there's a dispute each party posts their side then the admin will decide...

Crash (7)   ranked 1,300 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

Holy cow! Now that's a long response! There's a lot you're asking in here, and some of it has been touched on already. I'll pick one item to answer that I think will help the most.

MyLot disputes are obviously a sensitive matter. I've seen enough of these disputes to tell you that it stinks dealing with them, and I hate to see them. Nine times out of ten, there is more to the story than other members are aware of from reading the discussions. There is stuff that's against guidelines that's been deleted that you can't see. There are private messages sent to myLot that you don't see.

We are serious about maintaining the quality and integrity of myLot. We owe it to you and the rest of our users to do our best at maintaining a healthy atmosphere. Sometimes very tough decisions have to be made.

Trust me when I tell you this... We hate banning people, but when we do, we feel strongly that it is deserved.

myLot reputation of 97/100. pyewacket (11639)   ranked 165 out of 32,575 in mylot.com  2 years ago

Okay I hope you won't mind crash if I slightly disagree though. The friend I was talking about that was suspended/banned but then was re-instated was openly attacked by one disgrunted member....this member was not only stalking my friend but in some discussions openly said she was going to do everything possible to get my friend banned. My friend did absolutely nothing to merit any attacks as she wasn't abusive or flaming. This person, my friend was repeatedly and wrongly reported by this other member when it was this other member who was the troublemaker and yet she wasn't banned...as I said this happened over a month or so ago...The same issue seems to be going on now with another member that was banned and practically the same scenario is going on--I just think there should be a fairer system established where the member who is suspended or banned can freely states their side of the issue and be able to contact MyLot.
