Tilapia, haddock, salmon or shrimp? email this discussion to a friend?

OK, ever since the beef recall last week and the images of that uncaring guy dragging the unwilling cow into the slaughter, we are, for now, leaning more toward fish and chicken. So, at the grocery store Friday, I bought loads of it. So, what to have for dinner tonight? I decided on a side of rice with steamed tri-color bell peppers, yellow squash and zucchini..........I have a Pampered Chef grill pan that would do the salmon real nice, actually all of them real nice. Any recipe ideas for the above mentioned fish? Thanks in advance for terrific responces and recipes! Have a good day!

I like the heartier fish, like sword fish, and mahi mahi,

Mahi mahi, a fish that is in the dolphin family, but not a dolphin, is a hearty fish that can withstand a lot of cooking, and its hard to screw up,

Swordfish would go very nicely with your vegetables, and I have had a side of stir fry vegetables with it, and have seen recipes for stir fries,

As far as shrimp, I can go on and on for this one, salad, pizza, pasta, shrimp burgers, you name it,

and if you like Tilapia, you'll like orange roughie.
that is probably my 3rd choice of fish...

The one fish I can't stand is shark, turned out really tough.

I have had mahi mahi and like it. I tried swordfish once or twice and it's ok. I tried shark once too, again OK. My son is the one I have to try to please here with a more mild fish. I took out the tilapia and am putting in in a bread crumb/flour mixture with parm cheese and italian herbs and will bake it on a foil lined pan for a while. I have the veggies in the steamer waiting to turn on the fire underneath and my boyfriend is on his way home with the rice (I didn't have any). Isn't he nice:) I am with you on the shrimp, I can do a ton of things there.

I can tell you from alot of experience, Tilapia is fantastic. It's mild and oh so good.
We take our and lightly bread it and deep fry it, but you could season it the way you want and bake. I can eat Tilapia constantly.
Did you know that it is farm raised and orginated in Africa? I worked at a restaurant and this was a big seller there.
Haddock is good, but again, we deep fry it after lightly breading it.
Salmon, this is one fish I can not tolerate.
Shrimp, bring it on, in scampi, alfredo, fried, steamed, any way, but raw!
Good luck with the Tilapia. It is really yummo.

Thanks! I tried it for the first time last week and it is what I took out again today. I wanted my son to try the salmon, but he turned his nose up to it and I do want him to eat. He is very tall and thin. He needs all the good food I can get into him:) I didn't know it originated in Africa. I have noticed it hitting the supermarkets like wildfire in the last year or so. Thanks!

Your plan sounds wonderful! I do have a couple of recipes you might like in my blog at www.recipes-for-real-people.com Search for "greek fish" and again for "shrimp" to find them. The fish recipe would work with any or all of the varieties of seafood that you mention, though I use blue hake that I get from Schwan's (you know, the guys with the yellow truck with the swan on the side). Let me know if you try the recipe!

myLot reputation of 92/100. JanisRemaxRealtor (147)   ranked 174 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

I'll look up the recipe for greek fish that you suggest. I have never heard of blue hake? I used to get Schwan's but have not for years! I used to really like every thing I bought from them though. Can't remember why I stopped having them come out, probably money at the time. Maybe I'll give them a call again. I pass their trucks all of the time!

I will let you know. I pass their "home base" a lot out in my area. Loads of trucks there, but they are usually either out on the job, or parked for the day when I pass by. Drew dyed his hair yellow once, I about had a cow!

I place haddock or tilapia fillets in glass baking dish that has been greased with butter, I then slice butter pats on top of the fillets, sprinkle with garlic powder and lemon pepper, cover with foil and bake at 350 for about 30 minutes. I take the foil off after 20 minutes to let it brown up.
Serve with lemon wedges and rice.

My family has always been a big fish seafood eating family. I limit red meat to 2 times a week. Then its lean roast or ground beef. Tilapia is a fantastic fish, along with grouper, that you have not mentioned here. I also fry a mean catfish. But for cheaper dinners through out the week, whiting or cod works well. Simply broil with lemon and seasonings, it is not only delicious but fast as well.

myLot reputation of 92/100. JanisRemaxRealtor (147)   ranked 174 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

Broil is a good idea. I actually baked with italian seasoning bread crumbs. It was very good with the rice and steamed vegetables. I think I tried grouper once. If I remember correctly, I liked it quite a bit. Thank you and have a great day!

I love fish, but we don't get it often enough for me. We have cut our beef intake, and getting most of our protein in beans.. Tonight my husband is picking up cod, that is another really good fish..

All my fish is cooked with lemon and garlic and parsley and then broiled..

I also noticed you mentioned chicken. Chickens are also abused and may have problems, so I cut down on that also...

myLot reputation of 92/100. JanisRemaxRealtor (147)   ranked 174 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

Beans...........well I like em, but they don't like me:) Yes, I like cod as well, it was just not on sale the other day. The salmon was buy one get one free! I love those deals! Yes, the lemon, garlic and parsley sound wonderful. I think about the chickens too.....geez,........... vegan?

myLot reputation of 91/100. carmelanirel (5256)   ranked 203 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

Yeah, either that or buy locally or raise the animals yourself.. I know, it really is bad, I can't stand it either..As for the beans, I heard that if you don't eat them often, it would not agree with you. It didn't with me at first and now it doesn't bother me.. Or maybe you could try bean-o?

myLot reputation of 92/100. JanisRemaxRealtor (147)   ranked 174 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

We are going to attempt a garden this year. All fresh vegetables at least. Or, what we can gleen from our vast fields:) I've seen the bean-o ads, but never tried it.......oh dear, the things that we have to worry about!

myLot reputation of 91/100. carmelanirel (5256)   ranked 203 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

growing your own, especially if you do it organically, is a wonderful idea and good investment in your health.. And preparing now is also a good idea. Start some seeds now so that by the time your garden is ready, you will have starter plants ready to be planted..

myLot reputation of 91/100. carmelanirel (5256)   ranked 203 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

I don't know exactly where you are in the states, but the further south you are,the sooner you can plant.. I suggest you look into this site where they can help you find your planting zone and even with some plants..

myLot reputation of 92/100. JanisRemaxRealtor (147)   ranked 174 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

I will check that michigan bulb web site out. I used to get their catalogs. We are in Ohio. Most people around here begin their gardens at memorial day and are usually taking them down at labor day. I am going to try to plan it to have some colder weather vegetables planted a bit later to prolong the garden and healthy eating. I have a good plan in my head, we'll see if it works out my way:) Thanks!

myLot reputation of 91/100. carmelanirel (5256)   ranked 203 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

Really? I am in Ohio too and planting around Memorial day is the better time to plant. It used to be mid-May, but with the weather we have been having, I think waiting the extra few weeks is a wise thing to do..:)

I hope your garden works for you. Remember, it may not be what you think it should be the first year or so, it takes some mistakes to learn how to grow a beautiful garden for your area..:)

Well, I just have to say that while the cows may not be slaughtered very nicely...are fish and chicken slaughtered any nicer? I've watch the history channel and other shows that show how fisherman "catch" the fish, and of course there are the ones that they dont' show that "equal" the bad cow slaughters, but the ones they do show - corraling the fish into a netting cage and then pulling them up out of water so they can't breathe and then cutting their heads off..and the chickens - probably not far from the same as the cows...don't see much difference! If that is the reason for not eating one thing over the other...God gave us this food to eat. fish, beef, chicken... we can only do so much.

But...since fish is all more expensive than I can afford, I cant' stand the smell, and can't stand most of the flavors - me and seafood just part ways. I like lobster, King crab legs if fresh, I like fried clams and shrimp but since they are more expensive than I can afford and with the fat of the fried part, I'll just pass on seafood!

myLot reputation of 92/100. JanisRemaxRealtor (147)   ranked 174 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

Well, you are probably right about the inhumane treatment of our treatment of the food supply. I have had lobster before and it was just fine, but it is expensive. I had crab legs once and they were ok too. I like crab cakes a lot! I get those as an appetizer when we go out to eat. Clams..........yuck-o I can sure do with out those slimey things:)

myLot reputation of 95/100. coffeebreak (2825)   ranked 21 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

I don't eat any of it at home. Just not the same! I can't afford it anyway! But I got hooked on crab legs many years ago when it was $3.99 a pound! Now, up to $20 - don't see it much. Altho there is a brand of imitation crab meat that I like for on a sald - havent done that in awhile! Should look next time at grocery. Lobster - FOrget how I first had that, it is okay, but so rich and sweet and expensive, and can't remember when I had that lst, but it was good. The fired shrimp and clams - I got hooked on those when we lived in Las Vegas and the buffets were $5-$9 and tons of seafood. They didn't have lobster much, but they did have crab legs -snow crab is good, just more trouble than it is worth, but for $5 I worked at it! And the fried clams and shrimp were so good! I loved living in LV - I ate for free most of the time!

My sister lived there for a while, but I never had the opportunity to visit. People here in my office LOVE to go there and gamble. I am not a gambler. But, would like to go for the experience!

myLot reputation of 95/100. coffeebreak (2825)   ranked 21 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

We were there for work reasons, but I figured how to make that city pay me! I joined every slot club on in town (on weekends walked the strip and took advantage of the freebies and 99¢ stuff) and then once on the mailing lists, they send to locals, got free buffets, BOGO's on all kinds of things. I seldom cooked a meal as why cook when you can get it free? I also learned the tricks about the slots, I don't gamble either, just play video poker. But many of the casinos had "cash your pay check here and get $5 in tokens" for the slots machines. So I'd take my pay check, cash it, get my $5 in tokens and go play the $5. When it was gone, so was I but while there I got free drinks and a 99 cent hotdog, and enjoyed myself for an hour or so! If I won anything, I'd cahs out and go home! The point the casino was trying to do was get people in there with their paycheks and play till the paycheck was gone! I just played till the free money was gone! I had lots of little things like that that I did and hardly spent any money! Idon't think they are doing htat much these days. Husband is therenow inconstruction building those huge resorts/spas/hotels and they don't have lot of that stuff anymroe he says and the whole town is changing so much, it hardly isn't even fun to go! They took out the money for slots - now you put in your money or dollar bills or credit card and there is no clanking of the money as it comes out, no bells going off....it gives you a receipt and you have to go find the cashier and redeem for your cash!!!

I made tilapia for dinner tonight... served it with cole slaw and potatoes. I breaded it with a mix of bread crumbs and parmesan cheese.

Although I know that salmon is probably the healthiest, it's my least favorite of what you mentioned.:-) I like shrimp best and tilapia or haddock is all the same to me, I don't have a preference.

So what did you end up making?:-)

myLot reputation of 92/100. JanisRemaxRealtor (147)   ranked 174 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

I made the tilapia with rice/steamed vegetables and some fresh bread from the bakery. It was a very nice meal. I seasoned the tilapia seasoned similar to your recipe above. I wanted the salmon, since we had the tilapia last week, but my son turned his nose up to it. I'll grill salmon one day this week and top a salad with it. Thanks!

Sounds good... so we both had tilapia last night.:-) What are you serving tonight? Homemade BBQ Chicken Pizza and macaroni salad here.

Last night we had potato cheddar soup and crustinnis. The soup was from a kit Tastefully Simple..........it was actually quite good. I added bacon, rosemary and cracked black, but it really didn't need a thing and was ready in 30 minutes. I have never tried anything from them before, but I will have it again (there were 2 in the box). Tonight, I took out of the freezer, some of the pasta (spinich fetuccini) that I made a couple of weeks ago and will make alfredo sauce, salad and garlic bread. How about you?

I'm going to remember to save the bottom of the bag. I wonder if this would work with the Doritos corn chips as well. i know that tilapia comes with the southwest chipotle breading that it fantastic.

Well what attracted me to this discussion is the fact that being a Bengali, I am a born fish-lover and also the word tilapia. You see, here in Calcutta – India, we eat a fish called telapia fairly regularly and it’s a common presence in our local markets. As you know, most Indian markets are fresh daily markets and only local products are easily available and affordable. So I was quite surprised to see the name tilapia feature in American posts and then so many people saying that they love tilapia baked or grilled. Then I went to google images and there was our dear old common telapia staring right back at me. What a small world indeed! I was all the more surprised to know (courtesy wikipedia) that the tilapia is being consumed globally as an answer to food shortage. Wow! Anyway, we Bengalis of course have it with steamed rice and cooked in a light gravy. Its very appetizing and good for the health.

myLot reputation of 92/100. JanisRemaxRealtor (147)   ranked 174 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

I wonder why the spelling would be changed for our packaging? I have no idea, but yes the fish is delicious. And, also very affordable here as well. I am interested in the food habits of other countries, how do you make your gravy? Thanks so much for posting here in my discussion! Have a great day!

myLot reputation of 94/100. sudiptacallingu (3146)   ranked 652 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

The way we make it can be had only with boiled rice and with our fingers…so not very convenient for you. Anyway, we cut it into pieces and then wipe the fish with salt and turmeric (takes away any fishy smell lol and turmeric is a good antiseptic too). Then we lightly fry the fish on both sides. Then we make a add chopped tomatoes, some green chillies, powdered cumin and coriander, some diced potatoes and sauté the mixture for sometime (chk for salt of course). Then add water and as the light gravy starts boiling, gently add the fried fish (too much boiling will leave the fish pulpy). After sometime check if the potatoes are done and if yes, garnish with some coriander leaves, switch off the gas, take some boiled rice, add the fish & gravy on top, squeeze some lime juice and enjoy! Typical Bengali style I must say. But I want to try baking and grilling the same fish but I don’t think I will be able to do justice to either the fish or the recipe.

myLot reputation of 94/100. sudiptacallingu (3146)   ranked 652 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

Oh no, you cant use a fork. why do you think we use our fingers...the fish is not deboned. You have to take out the bones from the cooked fish while eating (or maybe people used to using a fork know a way of taking out the bones).

myLot reputation of 92/100. JanisRemaxRealtor (147)   ranked 174 out of 8,620 in cooking  8 months ago

Oh, I see. My boyfriend actually pulled 3 bones out of his, but I didn't have any in mine, nor did my son in his. I did not even think about that. Have a great day!
