I was CAST today! |
| |
| no, not for some obscure movie part... I saw the ortho pedic surgeon today - he said he would do surgery if I were an athlete or a young recruit - but for my case he will take the less invasive action first. So, my leg is cast from my toes to my knee. Unlike most foot casts mine is not flat , but flexed with the toe pointed downward and the ankle somewhat rotated inward. It is a very uncomfortable position! my heel is about 5 inches off the ground, this is putting a lot of pressure on my other hip when I walk. my leg is still quite swollen from the toes to the knee so I may need to be recast in a few weeks as the swelling decreases. I was surprised to find they use fiberglass for casting material instead of plaster of paris - I am sure this is much less heavy and it came in a variety of lovely hues to choose from. I chose a pretty royal blue. I am glad this happened before hot and humid weather comes around, but - my toes are FREEZING cold! lol. have you ever been casted? my only other time in a hard cast was when I broke both the arm bones at my wrist - that cast went to my shoulder - I was 6 or 7. | | | | | |

| | Wow, it sounds like you've had some rough experiences with casts, Modestah! It sounds very uncomfortable for you :(. I think you do have a point about being grateful it's not hot weather, though. I've not yet had the pleasure of a cast. | | | | | | |

| | Ouch! I hope you feel better soon. Can be the first one from Mylot to sign the cast? I would be honored! Maybe you could put an extra large sock on your foot to keep your toes warm? | | | | | | |

| | Modestah I must have missed a few posts since you hurt your foot. Was it a tendon? oh the fiberglass is great. It actually causes less sweating, and there for less discomfort. Put you a big sock on that foot. I have had my wrist in a cast and once I had a removable cast for some damage I did to some tendons on my ankle, during an arobics class. | | | | | | |

| | yes, I tore the achilles tendon. in order to get it to heal I need my toes pointing more downward. - the cast is built up quite a bit to achieve this - so I have no socks or slippers that will make it around this elephant sized foot... I may have to crochet something! I had the soft cast put on last week to hold me over till I could get in to see the surgeon. | | | |

| | When I had carpal tunnel surgery, it did not go as planned and I had to wear a cast for 8 weeks. Eight of the longest weeks ever. I hated it. I would wake up in the middle of the night with anxiety attacks. I just wanted to cut that cast off. LOl | | | | | | |

| | haha,,, I wanted to do that last night, JUST LET me move my foot to a new position!!! and then when I had an itch down by my ankle - oh boy, this could become quite a compulsion to want to take this thing off. | | | |

| | I am sorry you are uncomfortable right now Mod. What happened to your extremity? I broke my arm when I was around 7 too. The casted the arm. The same day as the cast was removed, I broke it again LOL Another cast. I was running and playing outside and tripped over the same low stone wall at our childhood house. Oh dear hahahha. | | | | | | |

| | oh no! did you learn a lesson after that second fall? I was not doing anything extraordinary, lol, I was just walking - went up a slight incline and somehow hyper-extended my foot in a bizzare way... ended up tearing the achilles tendon, heard a CRUNCH POP and went down to the floor screaming in a most unlady like fashion. so they have to cast it in this strange pointed toe way (ballerina style, heh) in order that the ends of the tendon will repair itself. When the cast comes off I will be walking on my tiptoes because the tendon healed that way - over time and with physical therapy I hopefully will be able to stretch the tendon back down to where it ought to be. | | | |

| | Yes, I learned my lesson Mod LOL Oh dear, that is a terrible position to be in and must be quite uncomfortable. But yes, I feel in time, you will be able to gradually work the foot in it's original position. This will take time however, but it will happen..I have seen some terrible injuries and they have healed. For instance, my other half had knee surgery and when the doctors sawed off the original bad knee and put another one in made of titanium, all the muscles and ligaments and tendons must grow back to the false knee. Already after about 4 months now, they are growing back and good and in the right place...walking good now. So you see, it can happen in that way. Good Healing to you Mod. xo | | | |

| | I broke my arm roller skating back in the olden days! Then they did use plaster of paris and only had one color! But everyone signed it and that was fun! Glad you are getting it taken care of and hope you don't have too much pain! | | | | | | |

| | Oh, Modestah, so sorry you're having to go through this! I don't have any experience with having a cast, and even raising two boys we never had a cast (had a splint on a broken finger with one of them once, though). Nice that you got to choose your own color! Goodness, wrap a towel around those toes until you get something made to cover them and warm them up. Or, on the other hand, maybe cold toes will take your mind off the odd position and the itchiness! Hopefully the time will go really fast and you'll be good as new when the pretty blue cast finally comes off and you do your physical therapy. | | | | | | |

| | Sorry to hear that. I just finished my "casting" last February. I have a fall from our stairs, my left hand supported my body. I was confined in a hospital for 4 days. I was in cast from my elbow to my hand for one month. After a month in full cast, I was in half cast, yes, using the fiber class thing. It is quite lighter than the usual plaster of paris but quite expensive. Its color is blue always. At present I am undergoing theraphy, last two weeks on a daily basis, next 2 weeks thrice a week and these coming 2 weeks twice a week basis. Hope it will be back on its old self again. Take care and get well soon. | | | | | | |
