Have you ever used a Solar Oven? you do not need any expensive and elaborate unit to give it a whirl.

my son built a simple solar oven out of materials readily available around the house.

He used two cardboard boxes
newspaper
plexiglass (can also use stretched plastic wrap)
black spray paint
aluminum foil

to make it look shnazzier he covered the outside box in a spiffy contact paper.

he did this project in 5th grade home school to enter in a city science fair. he took 2nd place. He cooked chicken for the judges during the fair, using his solar oven.
here are instructions for the style of solar cooker that my boy made - very easily constructed and so much fun to use!

here is another style of easy to build solar cooker

what do you think? are you willing to give it a try?

I have had fun with solar ovens, Modestah. I enjoy trying to cook different things.

Last Spring I tutored an 8th grader and we built a solar oven out as a project. He was able to learn all sorts of things but my main concern was that he be able to read and follow instructions (I wrote them.) His solar oven was made out of wood, and we snazzed it up in various ways. He's cooked all sorts of things in it.

Congratulations to your son!:)

how fun! for both of you. I should like to have one built out of wood - it would be much sturdier and long lasting! Seth's oven did not fare too well on a long distance move we took.
My one daughter is in 7th grade this year, perhaps this is a project we will do together.
Did you use metal sheeting instead of aluminum foil then?

Actually, (you may laugh at this) but we used adhesive flashing. Why? Because that's what I had on hand. We used a bunch of stuff I had laying around (I have tons of stuff laying around.) The only thing we bought were wheels so he could roll the oven all over his deck.

Boy, you two have got me fired up. I haven't looked at the sites, but are these portable enuff to go camping? Could you make them portable enuff? Would they also make good dehydrators? I can get these answers on line, but it's so much better to hear from experience. Mmmmm....just thinking of campfire biscuits!

myLot reputation of 96/100. Transdisc (14537)   ranked 205 out of 2,774 in frugal living  8 months ago

You can make it portable. Basically, as long as the inside is reflective, the outside absorbs heat (black) and there is a solar collector of adequate size (glass top) the size really doesn't matter. You could probably make something that is collapsible and easily transportable.

pergammano http://solarcooking.org/plans/ shows some very simple one that would be ideal to transport for camping.

We made solar ovens in girl scouts many years ago. I don't remember what we made now. My girl scout leader took a picture and it was clear we all had fun making them.

My most recent solar oven I watched my girl scout troop build it. They made a peach treat for everyone and the parents were so impressed with the results. I was so proud that they did everything themselves while I watched.

I've never actually used one but have instructions for building one in my emergancy survival kit - you just never know when that may be the only option you have.

Sounds like a wonderful project and I am all into conservation but I don't think I would build one for the little amount of time I spend baking. Since I live by myself I don't use an oven alot. Mostly just for baking cookies with my granddaughter comes....and she's 2 1/2 I don't think she would approve!

:) We do not have air conditioning and our summers are so hot and humid. I am planning, now - thank you transdisc! to build a more permanent solar cooker and in this way we can keep the house from getting quite as hot - even cooking on the stove can heat up the house -

That looks like such a fun project to try. I wouldn't mind trying it sometime when we're out camping. I think everyone would be impressed.

Nope.

And wow, your son is such a genius!

I think I would feel ashamed standing next to him.:P

If a solar oven really works and can cook food, why not? I think I will use it and show it to all my guests when they visit!:)

Hello I am happy to learn that your son made a solar cooker. I was in an Engineering college from 1980-1984, at that time these things were new. I had given this to a batch of 16 students as a project. Only seven could complete because the materials were not avaialable easily. I repeat I am talking of 1980.

What a smart young man you have there!! I love to see young people doing projects like this. My oldest grand daughter was involved in science fairs in 7th & 8th grade and won 1st place for her project.
He can come cook chicken for me in that awesome oven!
Have a great day!

I made one ages ago for a school science project. Cooked hotdogs on it. The science fair was indoors so I had to use a strong lightbulb instead of the sun, but it worked great.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Modestah (7428)   ranked 5 out of 2,774 in frugal living  8 months ago

oh neat, a light bulb - sort of an easy bake oven, heh. do you remember what wattage of bulb you used?

myLot reputation of 92/100. Myrrdin (1360)   ranked 132 out of 2,774 in frugal living  8 months ago

I am not sure, maybe a 150, I know it was a bright light, but one you didn't have to hunt too hard for.
