Last week I dropped into a local supermarket (Tesco) to pick up literally a few things. I took a basket, selected my items and went to a checkout. The checkout was completely clear and the assistant, an older lady, was sitting waiting for custom. I took my basket to her and started to unload the few items (3 or 4 only). She told me that I should use the basket checkout down at the other end of the store (where there was a queue) as her checkout was only for trolleys. I said that I was surprised and was this a new policy. She said no, just her preference. I asked her would she prefer that I spoke to her supervisor as I felt that if individual assistants are gong to make store policy, then the customers should know, so that we could prepare ourselves perhaps by shopping elsewhere. She served me, but with very bad grace. Do your store assistants sometimes grumble abut you?

11. highflyingxangel (8951) | 2 years ago | That's interesting. I'm surprised that she has made her own 'policy' in regards to serving customers. It just seems like to me she was annoyed that she had a customer that she had to serve and she was trying to get out of it. There is no way I'd allow my employees to do that kind of thing because it's really unnecessary. If you're store does't have any specific rules, then why would you feel the need to make them?

p1kef1sh (5631) | 2 years ago | I think that you're right. She was feeling lazy and I had interrupted her cosy day dream. I used to have quite a few staff too. I would have not been a happy bunny if one of them had dealt with a customer that way either.

She obviously does not like her job very much and I would have done everything in my pwer to help her be releived of it. I just like to help people out.

| 14. walzlori (9) | 2 years ago | I would have been really upset she didnt have anyone in her lane and you are suppose to treat customers as good as you can. I gripe about things at stores if I have to wait or someone tells me you have to go to another lane I can understand if they are busy but she wasnt even busy. I went to walmart and was at the back of the store and had to walk to the front to get customer assistance to help me so then had to walk all the way back again and had to wait 20 minutes I got the manager and told him how displeased I was and he gave me 10 percent off my purchase.

p1kef1sh (5631) | 2 years ago | Well done. But what a palaver. I find it amazing that despite stores investing millions in training, customer service is still not what it should be. Of course, store staff are humans too, but I felt that in this case she was just being lazy.

17. balasri (9409) | 2 years ago | They come in so many hues and characters.Yes I have come across some assistants who serve you as they are doing it as a work in a concentration camp. Some others never like buying so many things and you can see the invisible green. And a few take a look at you as a merciless task master. And of course there are few with that perennial smile and gentle manners though rare.

18. giftsandbagscom (12032) | 2 years ago | yes they have gotten out of shape. I stand right there and curse them out as well. The entire time they are ringing up my stuff. I had one girl talking to the nest about her freaking hair weave. I was in a rush to get a bus in Miami. Boy I was heated with them. I stood right there and talked about them being rude and all. They stopped sure enough. And I took my stuff and made a statement to customer service. I am good for that in the store. Let someone with over ten items be in front of me on the ten items or less line. I go straight to customer service.

19. sid556 (10585) | 2 years ago | You should have gone to her supervisor anyway. I have never had that experience. I work in a store tho and my boss will not tolerate any of his workers treating the customers rudely. We have had a couple of them that have such bad dispositions and even tho they were good workers,he let them go. I have actually gone thru the quick line when no one was there with more than the limit of items and the clerk was very gracious and actually told me she was bored and did not mind checking my groceries out in the least.

20. Darkwing (7519) | 2 years ago | That assistant displayed very bad manners to you, and in my experience, she was wrong in telling you to go to another till, as every till accepts basket shopping. The ones at the end are for baskets only, and the rest are for both trolleys and baskets. She had no right telling you that at all, let alone be so rude and ungraceful about it. I think I would have reported her, anyway. I'm sure Tesco wouldn't be too happy to hear how she'd spoken to you.
Nevertheless, I think you handled the situation very well. Brightest Blessings.

p1kef1sh (5631) | 2 years ago | I think that you are right. Tesco wouldn't be happy. My sister is a senior manager with Waitrose and she was horrified when I told her. She said that the person would have gone straight onto a warning with them. However, I did what I did and if there was to be a next time, I might well react differently.

Darkwing (7519) | 2 years ago | Yes, and you handled it in a very diplomatic but no-nonsense way, and she served you. You got the result, and I guess that's what matters in the end. Well done.
