Last week I dropped into a local supermarket (Tesco) to pick up literally a few things. I took a basket, selected my items and went to a checkout. The checkout was completely clear and the assistant, an older lady, was sitting waiting for custom. I took my basket to her and started to unload the few items (3 or 4 only). She told me that I should use the basket checkout down at the other end of the store (where there was a queue) as her checkout was only for trolleys. I said that I was surprised and was this a new policy. She said no, just her preference. I asked her would she prefer that I spoke to her supervisor as I felt that if individual assistants are gong to make store policy, then the customers should know, so that we could prepare ourselves perhaps by shopping elsewhere. She served me, but with very bad grace. Do your store assistants sometimes grumble abut you?

22. anonymili (2895) | 2 years ago | Golly how awful! I would have been thoroughly gobsmacked had that happened to me! I would have taken a note of her name and made an official complaint after leaving the store having had time to think about it.
In Sainsburys last year, I was in line behind an elderly lady. She was packing her items into plastic bags and doing so rather slowly. I wasn't bothered. There were no helpers around to help with the bag. Until she had finished I couldn't get on with my purchases. The thing that annoyed me was the cashier serving her/me was a trainee. She sat there and just glared at the elderly woman whilst she struggled to pack her bags and didn't even offer to me, she made tutting noises as if it were a real hassle for her. I was horrified. Then when she was scaning my items, she pretty much flung my items down the aisle so they crashed into the end. I made a point of remembering her name and when I got home I emailed the store manager saying how stunned I was at this behaviour and they should not leave a trainee on till like this without a supervisor as she was clearly starting off her career in the wrong vein. I said it was probably not her fault for displaying that behaviour - if she's new she should be given proper training and I wasn't saying she should lose her job but be given some proper training and shown how to be nice to customers. A smile doesn't kill either! I received an email back saying they appreciated my feedback and would I like to come in and have a chat with the manager and that particular member of staff so she could apologise. I didn't want her apology, the little old lady needed the apology, I just wanted to point out that training is important! Otherwise a couple of years down the line she'll end up like that crabby woman who served you! x

p1kef1sh (5733) | 2 years ago | I fully accept that checkout assistants are human too. Unfortunately for them though, they are at the sharp end of customer interface and they are a key element of the gauge that we go by in choosing where to shop. My wife had something similar to your Sainsbury's experience in Tesco last year. The lady in front was about £2 short in her money. The assistant was very sarcastic and was telling her that she shouldn't have bought tstuff when she knew that she didn't have the means to pay. My wife was so incensed that she paid the £2 for the lady and gave the girl an earful. The lady was very grateful and said that she would paty my wife back. She was told that it was OK and not to worry. My wife works for our local Council and was wearing her uniform with her name badge on. About a month later, one of the staff from the cash office rang my wife and said that a lady had been in and had brought the £2 she owed her.

23. Goodie123 (7548) | 2 years ago | Oh My, I am not the type of person who stands up for my rights. But this would have made me see red. I would have screamed for the supervisor. This appears to be happening quite alot. Where I live there is one store that will not allow trolleys thru the basket lane. An elderly lady had 3 items in a trolleys, she was told to go to another checkout. It was clear as day she needed the trolley to help here thru the store. The checkout assistant would not let her thru.

p1kef1sh (5733) | 2 years ago | I can cope with the idea of no trolleys in the basket lane as that lane is usually smaller, although I think that if someone is obviously infirm then an exception should be made or better still, a staff member could take her shopping through for her. I have seen very elderly people have their shopping done by staff on occasion which I feel is a very positive thing.
| |
|
|
Goodie123 (7548) | 2 years ago | This particular store would not do anything for the elderly. It is staffed by the sourest faced assistants I have ever seen. The hand basket isle always let trolleys thru before because it is wide enough for 2 trolleys.

I would tell them what went on and if they don't want your business, someone else does. She should be put in her place.

26. lecanis (7212) | 2 years ago | Wow, I would be really offended if someone said something like this to me. What kind of snob thinks they can make their own rules for things like this without posting anything or consulting their supervisors? Gah!
I don't shop all that much, and when I do it's usually at the same store where my husband works. So I haven't had too many problems there. When I was younger, though, I always had the problem of people not wanting to wait one me just because I'm "weird".:P
| |
| |
|
|
p1kef1sh (5733) | 2 years ago | Weird? You're not weird. What's weird is rebuking a customer for having the temerity to try to buy something in your store. I thought that was the point of such venture. I offer, you buy, we both happy. I shan't let it happen again.

|
|
lecanis (7212) | 2 years ago | I know, you'd think that since you, the consumer, are the reason they have a job, they'd be a little nicer. I know I'm always nice to my customers at the bank, even ones with rather annoying or ridiculous requests. And your actions were neither annoying nor ridiculous.

27. Sissygrl (5760) | 2 years ago | wow maybe that lady just didn't want to do her job that day!! maybe she is bitter cause she works in a grocery store and really hates her job. If you dont like serving people and talking to people then you shouldnt be working in that type of job should you?! lol. If i were you i would have talked to her supervisor anyways. Let him/her know that that lady is doing her job inproperly, i'm sure there are a lot of other people who would love to have her job.

p1kef1sh (5733) | 2 years ago | That is so true. Although we live in an area of almost 100% employment so it's a bit of a nightmare trying to get someone to take some of these jobs. Still. it costs nothing to be pleasant.

29. chellekellam (129) | 2 years ago | Yes they have. It's not like you were trying to go through the express lane with an overflowing cart. That associate was just plain lazy. One time at Wal-Mart, I went through the express lane with 12 items (8 of which were Kool-Aid packets - not big items by any means). The other lanes were busy and the express lane was empty. The cashier refused to ring me up so I asked for a manager. He said "I'm sorry, maam, but it is a 10 item or less lane. We do have other checkouts available". I said "Fine", put my basket on the floor and said "I'm sure that Giant Eagle will be more than happy to ring up my 12 items. My husband and I have 7 children, and we spend a lot of money on birthdays and holidays. I bet Target will appreciate our business. Thank you for a terrible experience at Wal-Mart". While I do still shop at Wal-Mart, I shop at a different location.
