Last week I dropped into a local supermarket (Tesco) to pick up literally a few things. I took a basket, selected my items and went to a checkout. The checkout was completely clear and the assistant, an older lady, was sitting waiting for custom. I took my basket to her and started to unload the few items (3 or 4 only). She told me that I should use the basket checkout down at the other end of the store (where there was a queue) as her checkout was only for trolleys. I said that I was surprised and was this a new policy. She said no, just her preference. I asked her would she prefer that I spoke to her supervisor as I felt that if individual assistants are gong to make store policy, then the customers should know, so that we could prepare ourselves perhaps by shopping elsewhere. She served me, but with very bad grace. Do your store assistants sometimes grumble abut you?

Hatley (21866) | 2 years ago | I had something a bit different but still rude happen to me in a clothing store. There were signs on the wall marked womens rest room and mens resttoom. so I started towards the door marked womens rest room and a clerk grabbed my arm and rudely shoved me back almost making me fall. she said in a loud rude voice you arent allowed in there. I said let go of me or I am calling the police. she dropped myarm then told me the rest rooms had been moved and that was an old sign didnt I know better. I said. this is my first time in here and I want to see the manager.the manager came over and I told him how she had treated me He said to the angry woman. you are fired. I felt bad but yet she had brought that on herself.

32. pumpkinjam (2761) | 2 years ago | I have had similar trouble in Tesco. Last time I went in, well maybe not last time but a recent time, I only had a few things and didn't want to wait in a queue, I always look for the quickest queue. Not necessarily the one with the fewest people but for example if there is a queue of 5 30-something year old men with 2 or 3 items or one with 2 old ladies with a basket full, I'll go for the queue with the men because they tend to be quicker. Anyway, back to the point. I was in Tesco and went to an almost empty checkout because that was quickest for me. I had my son in a pushchair as well so was trying to push him and carry the shopping so I didn't really want to go further than necessary. One of the staff who never seems to do anything asked me to go to the "10 items or less" checkout. Normally, I wouldn't mind but it was the other end and the queue was bigger, the woman could also see I was already struggling with what I had. I think it's disgusting. I wouldn't have minded so much if the place was packed but it wasn't. We should be able to choose which checkout we go to. Obviously you don't go to a "10 items or less" checkout with a full trolley but I don't see a problem going to an empty checkout with less than 10 items.

p1kef1sh (5734) | 2 years ago | I think that was worse than my case. I would have certainly complained then. I always go for women checkout operators because I think that they are quicker! Men chat too much!

|
|
pumpkinjam (2761) | 2 years ago | There is only one male checkout operator at my local Tesco. He is young and gets done quite quickly. The worst thing I find is that they have the absolute slowest people working on the less items checkout so it works out just as quick waiting in another queue for a better cashier!

33. chertsy (2617) | 2 years ago | You handled it very well in my opinion. I think I would have placed my 3-4 items still in the basket on the belt and walked out. I honestly never had a problem were I shopped at. I even had a cashier say out loud while other customers waiting, that she wished that everyone that came through her area was better prepared as I was. All I did was have my discount card, id, and my debit card out and ready to go. I also placed my items neatly on the belt so it's easier to get to and people behind me are able to put there items there as well.
Now my mom had a bad experience at Walmart, she had a lady that must of been in a bad mood that was giving her an attitude. My mom just politely pointed out to her, that if she didn't like what she was doing that she should look for a job that made her happy, because she wasn't happy dealing with her attitude, lol.
I had a bad experience at Walmart just a few weeks ago. I had to walk all the way to the back to get 12 balloons blown up, which when I got there, no one was there to help me. Then was told they had to get someone that delt with that. I mean come on how hard is it to blow up 12 balloons. So I got tired of waiting, and I let them know I was tired. I said out loud, that this was a mistake coming here, that I should have went to the other store instead, which I did.

34. RieRie (696) | 2 years ago | I've not heard that one before, fair enough if you went to a basket till with a trolley, that's not good, but other checkouts are there for anyone. What if the 10 or less wasn't open, would she have sent you to someone else, just because she's a lazy so-and-so. I get really annoyed with shops putting the slowest people they can find on the "express" till, if I can be quick everyone else can. (I don't work for Tesco, but I do work in a supermarket and the staff there are mostly useless too.)

36. worldwise1 (6114) | 2 years ago | I think, p1kef1sh, that the clerk was rude and out of line. She clearly did not have the authority to make such a decision, otherwise she would still have refused to wait on you. If it had been me, I would still have lodged a complaint against her.

38. crazynurse (5743) | 2 years ago | How rude of that assistant! I'm afraid that you handled the situation much better than I would have. I would have carried my basket and found the store manager. I would have handed the manager the basket and told him to ask the assistant on aisle X why I was leaving. I would have marched out of the store. The manager would have been left holding my basket and hopefully asking the pathetic assistant why I was so quick to leave. There is no sense in people who are paid to represent the store acting in such a rude manner.

39. suspenseful (17152) | 2 years ago | I do know if you have a few items and are paying cash, there is usually a quick checkout counter, but you can put more than six items in a basket, so I do not think that is why. Besides there are some people who only put one or two items in a shopping cart, especially if they are elderly and using a walker. That cashier was just being difficult. There is no store that has a policy of shopping carts only, in fact if there were, the cashiers there would not get out in time because people really buy a lot. So maybe she knew this, and they were paying her on commission and the more shopping carts in her line, the more pay she would get. You were right to talk to the supervisor.

40. LauraT2008 (1181) | 2 years ago | That is so unprofessional and unhelpful of her. She was obviously being very lazy or was just in a bad mood and took it out on you. I used to work in a small supermarket and we were always taught that your customers are the most important thing and to be courteous, as they are the reason you have a job.
In the past I have had people not even smile or say please or thank you, which I think is the height of ignorance, manners dont cost anything. You were totally right to ask about the supervisor.
