Last week I dropped into a local supermarket (Tesco) to pick up literally a few things. I took a basket, selected my items and went to a checkout. The checkout was completely clear and the assistant, an older lady, was sitting waiting for custom. I took my basket to her and started to unload the few items (3 or 4 only). She told me that I should use the basket checkout down at the other end of the store (where there was a queue) as her checkout was only for trolleys. I said that I was surprised and was this a new policy. She said no, just her preference. I asked her would she prefer that I spoke to her supervisor as I felt that if individual assistants are gong to make store policy, then the customers should know, so that we could prepare ourselves perhaps by shopping elsewhere. She served me, but with very bad grace. Do your store assistants sometimes grumble abut you?

Everyone makes mistakes and some people can make you mad by saying the wrong thing and having the wrong attitude but going off the deep end in my opinion makes the customer just as bad as the offending sales person.
This person's behaviour really shocks me to be honest and if I was the store manager I wouldn't have them on the checkouts where they are dealing with the public. Staff should be properly trained and put into a position that most suits them.

p1kef1sh (5670) | 2 years ago | With hindsight, and isn't that a wonderful thing, I probably should have said something to her supervisor. But I was quite taken aback to be told that she didn't really want to serve me. She got very grumpy when I suggested that we did speak to someone else. But by then she had rung up the goods, I had paid and I was on my way out. If I had seen a "suit" by the exit I might have said something. P probbaly won't be so kind if there is a next time. Funny thing is, the folk at that store are actually really pleasant. Must have been an off day.

I worked in a retail store as a cashier and there was no way that kind of service would have been tolerated where I worked. First we didn't have any stools or chairs to sit on and secondly the customer is always the most important person because without customers they wouldn't need as many cashiers. I personally, would have reported her to the front end supervisor for this behavour, and I would have gone right to the supervisor before I checked out my items. I would never put up with that kind of service and if the front end supervisor didn't do anything about it I would never shop at that store again.

45. p3halliwel2005 (2478) | 2 years ago | That lady is way too rude. I would have shouted at her if she did that to me..Usually here in the Philippines on the payment counter they have this post saying cart, baskets only, 10 items or below only, cash or credit card only ..there's also fast lane and this is really helpful for us buyers to know where we should go.They should do that there so as not to confuse the customers. You should've talk to her supervisor she acted so rude.

p1kef1sh (5670) | 2 years ago | We have a fast lane too. But that was at the other end of the store and this woman had no other customers. I was so surprised that I left without saying anything. I hope that there won't be a next time, but if there is, I will call the supervisor. Thank you.

46. carolscash (4886) | 2 years ago | As I work in a local supermarket, please let me say that you should have gotten a supervisor immediately and told on this rude clerk. She has no right to make her own rules based on her preferences. You are the customer and you deserve to be treated like you matter. We are actually offering bags now that the customers can use as to help with the environment and I would not expect one of our cashiers to tell someone that they would not wait on them if they had those. That is very rude!!

47. danishcanadian (20492) | 2 years ago | I have never heard of a basket aisle and a separate aisle for groccery cards, or trolleys, as you call them.
In Canada and the USA, we have what are called express lines, for people like yourself with only a few items, It doesn't matter whether you have a basket or a groccery card, if you have 10 items or less, you're welcome to use the express line. The other lines are for people who have full carts and who need more time, but that doesn't stop people with only a few items rom using those aisles too. Full carts though, can not use the express lanes.

p1kef1sh (5670) | 2 years ago | The theory is that people with just a few items won't need a trolley. The aisles are narrower therefore thus denying their use by trolleys.

48. OConnell87 (754) | 6 months ago | i work at tesco and the cashier was wrong to do that, we can't just pick and choose who we want to serve, although i wish we could because some customers are naturally rude and i would like to tell them to clear off.
if it was the other way round that you took over 20 items to a basket till then she would be right to tell you to go to a normal checkout, it really annoys me when people do that because then they moan there isn't room to pack their shoppping, but there isn't meant to be room to pack that much stuff and its not fair on people behind who are just getting a paper

p1kef1sh (5670) | 6 months ago | Thank you for confirming what I suspected was the case. My sister works for a competitor (as Head of Personel) and was extremely surprised at the assistant's attitude. I am sure that there are a minority of customers that are entirely obnoxious. I saw a lady today empty her trolley in the car park at Waitrose and just push her trolley in the vague direction of the trolley park. It went careering down the road fortunately not hitting any cars. Very selfish I thought.

49. PoetryPose (1155) | 6 months ago | In my little town everyone knows everyone else...I have shopped ta the same store for years and I have always been treated good except for one time when they hired this young teenager girl who cared more about texting her boyfriend then her job service....It took me 15 mineuts to go through her line and I was the only costumer and had just a handful of items...I wanted to say something to the store manger but did not want her to lose her job.The next time I went back in the store I found out MS.Text got fired because they caught her texting without me saying anything...Things have a way of coming around and telling on you...This lady that treated you so bad Pikey will get hers in the end...

p1kef1sh (5670) | 6 months ago | The girl in your store deserved it. No doubt. I haven't seen the woman in my store since. But it's a big store - huge. Maybe she's still there in another capacity. I just hope that they've given her some customer care training.
