I know if you live in the city this probably doesn't apply, but i live in a smaller town, and i cringe when i hear the helicopter over my house. I live close to the hospital so everytime i hear that darn helicopter, i know that someone is badly hurt and needs to be airlifted either in or out of the hospital.. I am writting the discussion cause i JUST heard it.. Do you have any sounds that you can recognize from your town you care to share ?

Police cars it seems I hear all the time at night. My town isn't dangerous but our cops are infamous in IL. for arresting a lot of people for DUI's!! Someone's got to do it I guess!

Hey i wouldnt complain! those people need to be arrested if you ask me. Better for them to get arreested then to kill someone on the street and have to sit in jail with THAT on their concience for the rest of their lives eh ?

Absolutely, I just wish they could turn their sirens down a girl needs her beauty sleep- ya know. Sometimes they wake me up then I can't go back to sleep. :(

We have a helicopter landing pad at one of the hospitals here in London too, and each time I see that orange chopper in the sky, I too am sad, because I know what it means. I was reminded by someone once that it isn't always a bad thing... sometimes they're delivering transplant organs for example... .but that means someone had to die first. Ugh! I get that same down feeling when I hear firetruck and ambulance sirens. The boys get so excited when they hear them, and I have to stop and remind them that it's not a cool thing. It means someone is very hurt or at the very least, very scared and needs help.

Yea, but this is a little hospital, i doubt they do any transplanting of organs there.. especially not at 11pm at night on a sunday.. :/ I think boys like those fire trucks cause they are red and shiney and LOUD. It's not just your boys. In the summertime here we have a firemans parade with all the firetrucks around all the surrounding towns, even the REALLY OLD ones. It's neat but REALLY REALLY loud.

We live close to a hospital too so we are always hearing ambulances. My son loves to look out our window and watch them as they pass. We are on a busier side street so the ambulances always go down our block. He is still too little to really understand what they do but that will come with time. The other thing that I hate is waking up to the sound of the gargage truck. i swear we must be one of their first stops in the morning because they always come about 630am Monday morning.

noise - listening for noise
I live right next to a hospital to and just the other day I heard a helicopter go over my house. Everytime I hear it I think someone is badly hurt also. I also recognize the train that goes by our house. Not to often but sometimes. Ambulences and cars. Lol the joys of living in the city.

My first apartment was in between the police station and the fire department. Oh those sirens would wake me up and it was always a bad feeling. I hate that sound. You know that something bad has happened to someone , somewhere.

Well I live right near a major interstate - so I hear the news choppers flying around to report sig alerts. I liver right near the International Airport - and believe it or not, I seldom hear the planes coming or going! I live in the middle of the transport area between 2 major military camps - those hueys are loud, but boy, since they are more heavy and lower based sound, the walls of the house tend to rumble right along with the chopper as it passes by and then of course, there are usually 2-3 flying together! So, Oh well - at least I know it is our boys and not theirs!

I agree, I don't like that either. We also live on the main street of out town, and I also hate all the sirens. The are constantly going by. We are also in a small town.

I can understand how that makes you feel sweety and I guess I wouldn't like it at all but would try to tell myself that it was someone who was about to receive the BEST treatment and they were going to survive which they might not without the helicopter! I live in a quiet area but not too far from a main road and we hear every siren that goes along that main road so I know what you mean! I think the noise I assosciate most with my town is air force jets! We regularly get jets flying over when they are on practise manouvers! xxx

It's the black helicopters I worry about. I keep my foil had nearby, just in case. LOL. There is a sound I miss from my town. A freight train used to run through town about 2:00 am. I lived far enough from the tracks that the sound was comforting if I happened to be awake. It's been rerouted, so we don't hear that any more. Some of my fondest memories are riding a train from Oklahoma City down to Temple, Texas to visit my grandparents in the summer.

I live on base so I hear the constant sound of the planes overhead. Ours are mostly cargo planes here. My sister is at another base in Florida because her husband is a mechanic on the fighter planes. His is the F-22 Raptor. I know a lot of people hate hearing the loud fighter jets but I absolutely love it for some reason. When we were stationed in Ohio before they got rid of all their planes the jets would fly over and it was so loud you couldn't hear anything else. I don't know what it is about it but I love the sound of the fighters.

I know just what you mean. I hear helicopters all the time. My hubby and I live in a small town right outside of the capital city, so not only do we hear helicopters, we hear airplanes all the time. We live very close to the path of the airport, so planes are flying over us all the time.

We live in a small city and the Police have a helicopter that seems to only be active in the early evening. Inexplicably Thursday evening is the night that they like to come and hover over our house! I am probably paranoid. We live halfway up a hill. Above us is quite a nice housing estate, but it has a number of crescent shaped streets where the boy racers like to congregate and do whatever it is they do with their cars. The helicopter has two searchlights on the rear and they shine these down onto the estate illuminating the streets and presumably directing guys on the ground in to the congregated groups. Unfortunately for us, we live in what is clearly the ideal spot for hovering whilst they do this. Mustn't grumble really though, they do a fantastic job and attend loads of road crashes on a deadly major highway about 6 miles north of us.

Yes, that's annoying and u healthy. Being a reclusive kind I hate noises and the most disturbing is the loudspeakers which go on almost every other day to support some kinda demonstration. And they do it against the court rules!

Sorry to hear about it Sissy. I have always dreamed on riding a chopper someday to see the aerial view of an island. I used to live in a school campus where the train passes nearby. The sound of the metal tires inching through the metal rails was so annoying and to think that trains are consisted of connected containers or whatever you call them. It's worse at night when everything is so quite and they come every 2 or three hours. Ugh!

I have the same thing. Mayo one from Rochesters Mayo Clinic flies over my house on a direct route to the hospital. Sometimes you hear sirens first then the helicopter and it's scary. I don't like sirens' anyway..they always give me the willies. I also have trains I hear. They don't bother me but when the kids come home they say that the horns are louder now then when they were growing up here...I think when they lived at home they were just used to them.

Medivac - I pray for those inside when I see one flying by
Oh gosh Sissy I know what you mean! I cringe when I hear an ambulance or a medivac helicopter because you know there's someone inside either very ill or hurt. I pray for them as they go by in hopes all will turn out ok. That's all one can do but it is a nice gesture.
