Im sure here in the UK that very often our doctors are wrong!! We like to place our trust in them ,but they are so pushed for time, you are in and out of the surgery in a couple of minutes. Sometimes you dont see the same doctor which causes more confusion,as they are just constantly going by notes..not good really .

If it was a life threatening diagnosis (illness) and a very serious decision had to be made I would get a second opinion. For ordinary aches, pains or sniffles I would not even think of getting a second opinion. It would also be too expensive as insurance would not pay for claims with trivial second opinion diagnoses.

I haven't seen a doctor in years but when I used to visit them at least once per year, I would follow his orders the best I could. I didn't follow his orders after having my hysterectomy though because I did not like the meds he put me on.

Hey there Marcie. I didn't have any problems. It wasn't pain meds he had me on that I quit taking. It was hormone pills. I actually had to go back and get some better pain pills because the tylenol three just did not cut it.

I think all doctors just guess. I have even had to tell a doctor that I had step throat only to have to go through the exam and get the swab and wait a day for the results before he would prescribe me the meds for it. I don't follow doctors orders usually. It is more a mind over matter in my book. As long as I am not bed ridden and hooked up to half a dozen machines in a hospital I still think I know my body best.

I never follow his orders I will take the advice into consideration but I will do what I want. I look into the information that the doctor provided but I will do my research on it to a quite extreme extent. I have seen many doctors in the last 2 years due to a severe back injury that I sustained in a car accident. I have followed some of them but many I have not. With the research that I have gained through these 2 years. I kinda know my needs better than the doctors in some cases. Notice some cases not all cases.

It depends on what's going on whether I go and get a second opinion or not. If it's something simple, then no, I'll just follow the Dr's orders. When I was first diagnosed with cancer I got a second opinion and ended up with a Dr who had this type of cancer as his specialty. Had I stuck with the first Dr, who knows if I'd still be here today. Another time, for a different problem, my one Dr said surgery was necessary, so I got a second opinion (who also reccommended surgery), and believe it or not I went and got a third opinion. The Dr I got the third opinion from suggested we try something homeopathic to see if it made any difference. The homeopathic medicines treatment worked well, and in the end I did NOT need the surgery. If I had gone with conventional medicine, I would be walking around with a colostomy to this day. I think when we go to the Dr we have to try and be as informed as we can about options for treating whatever we have. We must be our own advocates in our health care, sometimes it does make a huge difference in how something is handled, and the after effects of treatment. And once the Dr has decided with me what type of treatment, medicine, etc, I'm supposed to get, then I will follow what he/she prescribed so I can get better.

Well written Joy, sometimes you do half to use your own judgement, A friend of mind keep throwing up, I told her she needed to go to doctor, and she did, when she went to the doctor and told the doctor about her throwing up, the Doctor told her she just had some kind of Stomach Flu. if I was her Iif it keeps happen I would get a second oppinion and see what is the problem. thanks for your input.

If I think my doctor is wrong, yes I seek a second opinion. I do try and follow my doctors advice as much as I can.

When I can afford to see the doctor, I tend to follow her orders. Sometimes, though, the medicines are too expensive. But, I will tell her that and she might prescribe me another type. If she recommends an exam that makes me feel uncomfortable, I might put that off, though.

Before I got major surgery, my Primary Care Physician referred me to another doctor to get a second opinion. I trust my doctor with my health. If he reccommends something, that is what I do. If I did not trust him, I would find another doctor. Whatever my doctor can not do, God can.

I have to say that today there are not many good doctors. The doctors today want to earn more money and they will give you more extra medicines which you don't have to take. As long as I feel fine, I will never take the medicines again.

Not always. I'm supposed to be on medication for asthma (spelling?) but don't really need it. Only when I get sick with a cold and that only happens about 1-2 times a year. I've found that sometimes drs are wrong, but thankfully, the ones I have seen over the last few years have all been great!
