How do you celebrate Easter |
On the Saturday morning we boil eggs and let them cool so they are ready to be painted and decorated in the afternoon/evening before bed! The kids love to roll their eggs down a hill until the shell cracks and they can start to eat them, although Niamh usually put so many layers of paint on hers that I often worry she will never be able to crack the shell even if she used a jackhammer! lol If it is wet and cold (it usually is, we do live in Scotland after all) then we resort to rolling the eggs down the stairs, that can leave a BIG mess to be cleaned up but at least the children don't get too disappointed. We usually have a quiet day, well maybe not quiet as they kids are so hyped up with eating chocolate eggs! Usually there is chicken for dinner, I don't know why we eat chicken it just seems to be one of those traditions you follow even though you are not sure why! lol Anyway I wondered what, if anything all you lovely people in mylot do to celebrate Easter? xxx

1. killahclaire (1711) | 2 years ago | I do absolutely nothing to celebrate Easter. I was brought up Catholic but even as a child nothing special happed except that we got a chocolate egg.
Now I am too old for an egg and I am on this daft diet that means that I can't eat any chocolate at all.
I wonder if you eat chicken because those little fluffy yellow chicks represent Easter. Lol.

mummymo (11642) | 2 years ago | Aww poor claire - I HATE restrictive diets! I wasn't 'churchy' at all as a child but I am involved in our church now although even before I joined the church I celebrated Easter big style! i have never bought my kids Easter Eggs - I always buy them gifts! This year my eldest is getting a wireless adapter for his pc and my daughter is getting a Bratz vanity case and makeup - they still get tonnes of chocolate eggs from other people! Have a great weekend! xxx

2. stephcjh (22615) | 2 years ago | We don't do a whole lot here anymore for Easter other than dye some eggs. My daughter is now 16 so she isn't into hiding and finding eggs anymore. We do make a basket for her though. That is still fun to do and she still likes that.

| |
mummymo (11642) | 2 years ago | I like the idea of the baskets - we don't really tend to do that here! I do hope you have a great Easter sweetyxxx

3. Darkwing (7519) | 2 years ago | Firstly and foremost, I celebrate Ostara. This always falls on 21st March, at Spring Equinox. The Christians, for whatever reason, used these traditions in a similar way, but called them Easter. So, as the rest of my family are basically Christians, I have a double celebration normally.
I celebrate Ostara as a time of rebirth and new beginnings, so eggs are prominent, as are hares (an animal of the goddess Ostara/Eostre), Spring Flowers, the Mother Earth and the God of Fire, (Sun God). We paint eggs, gather flowers, walk in the countryside, taking in the new life, and plant seeds to represent our new beginnings/growth.
At Easter, I celebrate with the kids... I like to show my respect for their beliefs too. We colour eggs in the same manner, gather flowers and chocolate eggs are given, as a representation of new life/growth.
I like to eat Lamb at Easter because it's symbolic, but I guess Chicken is too... after all, from whence came the egg?
Brightest Blessings for a very Happy Easter, my dear friend. xxxx

tessah (2615) | 2 years ago | we celebrate Ostara in this house as well. eggs are dyed the day before and etched with runes for health and well being, and my husband and i err "the easter bunny";cough; hides them and little gifts throughout the yard. while hunting for the shiny presents and such, the yard is also inspected to find the new flowers sprouting up. my litle girl spends a good hour looking for whats come to life and chit chattering to the birds. we dont have a "traditional" dinner, this year im making ham simply because we havent had it in a while.
| |
tessah (2615) | 2 years ago | added note, the equinox doesnt always fall on the 21st.. it varies same as the solstices. this year it was the 20th=o)
| |
mummymo (11642) | 2 years ago | Darkwing honey you know I love to hear about your beliefs and celebrations - especially when you and your family can combine celebrations while still respecting the others faiths! I do remember a little about Ostara from last year but thank you for filling in some more of the details! I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Ostara?easter celebratioon! ps Don't you think that the words originate from the same place - they sound very similar!
Tessah thank you for contributing! I hope the 'Easter Bunny@ is good to your daughter and that she finds much new life to chat about in your garden! xx
| |
Darkwing (7519) | 2 years ago | I'm aware, of course, that the Equinox itself can fall between 20th and 22nd, but I don't change my dates for Ostara. I begin at dusk on 20th, and end at dusk on 21st, regarless, as 21st is the first day of Spring to me.
I like the rituals you follow for this Festival... I'm going to plant seeds or beans in rune shapes this year, selecting runes which are relative to what I want to develop within myself. I guess this is similar to the runes you mark on your eggs?
Brightest Blessings for a Happy Ostara, to you and your family.

Darkwing (7519) | 2 years ago | Oooops Mummymo, we posted at much the same time. Yes, Easter and Ostara sound similar, because the Christians took the Festival name from the "old beliefs". The word Ostara derives from the Goddess Eostre, an Anglo Saxon Goddess associated with the Dawn. The Dawn is in the East, hence Eostre. She was/is the Goddess of Spring, and new beginnings, so we honour her on the first day of Spring. In the Christian World, of course, Easter is the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ, from the dead, which I guess denotes a new life dawning? So, you can see why in the case of most pagan festivals, the Christians have a corresponding one; the only real difference being that the Christian festivals relate to the Bible, and the Pagan festivals, to their beliefs that there is an Earth Mother and a Sky Father, basically.
I'm getting deeper and deeper here... helllllllllllp!!! I'm beginning to feel like I'm preaching. Please forgive me... I don't mean to, but just to explain the difference.
Let's just enjoy what we each believe in, huh? A very Happy Easter, to you and yours, my dear friend. xxxxx
| |
mummymo (11642) | 2 years ago | Please, please. please my dearest friend do not apologise! You are not preaching simply extending to knowledge to someone who loves to learn! It would seem that Ostara is almost upon is as it is not too long til Dusk! Again sweety Happy Ostara (if that is an appropriate greeting) with much love xxx
| |
Darkwing (7519) | 2 years ago | Thank you my dear friend. Yes, a very appropriate greeting and Spring is supposed to be a very happy time. Take care. xxx

4. RLFinNash (5721) | 2 years ago | hello mummymo
sounds like you and your family will have a beautiful day on Easter Sunday. and sounds like that we'll be doing the same thing this coming Saturday. Saturday morning, i will boil the fresh eggs for decorating them on later in the afternoon. and also Saturday i have to fill some plastic eggs with candy. then on Easter Sunday we will be going to my sister-in-laws house for a feast. we will have turkey, ham and all of the fixings to go with it. just like a Thanksgiving dinner but only it is Easter time. i have to bring the mashed potatoes and the deviled eggs with us Sunday to their house and i will bring the decorated easter eggs as well as the plastic ones. and i sure hope that it isn't raining here on Sunday so that the kids can have fun Sunday afternoon hunting their Easter eggs.
have a beautiful weekend!

mummymo (11642) | 2 years ago | LOL Glad to know you have Saturday mapped out with egg decorating too! We don't tend to get the plastic eggs or baskets here - it is more boxed chocolate eggs than anything! Sounds like a real family day on Sunday and I hope it is all you could wish for! Happy Easter! xxx

Shaun72 (11882) | 2 years ago | It's alright a lot of people with ms get around really well. I am doing a lot better since I went to physical therapy though and doing the exersices everyday helps a bunch. My eyes are doing better except my right eye is blurry which happens with ms blurred vision.I'm glad the double vision is gone though.

mummymo (11642) | 2 years ago | It is good to know that the physical therapy is helping - sorry about the blurred vision although it is good to know that it is only one eye that is blurred and the double vision has been cured! xx

| 7. Ren1227 (84) | 2 years ago | We will be going to church in the morning to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, one of the most important days in the Christian faith. Then the rest of the day we usually get together with family. My brother and sister and parents all live in different places but usually try to meet up for lunch or dinner. I usually talk to them a once or twice a week but I haven't seen them for a while. I am looking forwward to getting together with my family. Have a Happy Easter, everyone!

mummymo (11642) | 2 years ago | Welcome to mylot Ren - I really hope you find this community as wonderful as I do! We usually go to church but our own church will not be having a service this Sunday and i cannot get to another, I will however still celebrate and thank God for all he has given us! It sounds like you will have a lovely time with your family - make the most of it! Happy Easter! xxx

kcook57 (853) | 2 years ago | We also will be goiing to Church as we do every Sunday and Thursday, the difference this Sunday is we will be celebrating the resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ....as it is the day we as Christian have set aside to do this, we call it Easter as has been said already. May be a pagann holiday to some, but our Lord did resurrect and whatever day we have set aside to celebrate it is well. We actually celebrate his resurrection all year long not just at Easter. He did resurrect and He is coming back to get His Church(the saved). Happy Easter everyone!

9. CatsandDogs (5132) | 2 years ago | My husband just retired from the army after 27 years so we were away for Easter however we did celebrate it ourselves a few times by boiling the eggs and painting them. It was a lot of fun! This year, we're not sure what we're going to end up doing because his mother is on her death bed and so time will tell what we'll be doing. I was planning on going to my parents place and celebrating it there with them but we shall see.

10. kfrisk (2817) | 2 years ago | Let's see. I am not a super religious person, but as we were growing up my mom made us go to the sunrise service at 6am at church, because we sang in the choir. Usually this was on daylight savings time, too, so it was REALLY early! Ugh. But now, I no longer attend church services. I have shopped for Easter baskets for the kids, they are hiding in my closet. They get the typical candy, plus a bigger gift (Narnia for Dylan, Monster Trucks for Dom, & a Tomagotchi for Kaitlynne) and the Easter bunny always gets them their first pair of summer sandals. I hide them in the morning, so they can get up and find them. Then we will go out to my moms for ham dinner. It's a pretty laid back weekend. We will dye eggs on Saturday, and the kids and my nephew will do an Easter egg hunt out at my mom's on Sunday.
